Biodegradable bags are more toxic than conventional plastic ones

Have you used those biodegradable bags that are now mandatory in Europe, those that are made with vegetable starch and that we can find in the fruit sections of supermarkets, because according to a study carried out by a group of scientists from the CSIC, acronym for the Higher Research Council scientists from Spain.

Biodegradable bags are more toxic than conventional plastic bags, and this is a very big problem, since biodegradable bags can be used to create compost, which accumulates the toxins and literally, according to researchers, “they can have a negative impact.” in the health of the population

Scientists have reached this conclusion by analyzing three bags, one made of compostable plastic, another made of recycled plastic and another made of conventional plastic, the usual one. After exposing the material of the bags to Zebra fish cells, the results showed a high level of toxicity. of compostable bags, a toxicity that increases with photodegradation, that is, when they receive sunlight.

Curiously, the conventional plastic bags did not show traces of toxicity, however, they did find toxicity in the biodegradable ones. The researchers' hypothesis is that the toxicity may come from the chemical additives that manufacturers add to make the biodegradable bags such as stabilizers, colorants. and waxes; which could be especially toxic.

Recycled plastic bags also showed higher levels of toxicity than conventional ones, since additives must also be added to facilitate their reuse.

The researchers could not identify what chemical compounds they were because they are protected by patents, the ball of responsibility for what to do about this problem is now in the hands of the rulers to require manufacturers to eliminate toxic compounds from their bags or to design other better ones.
