Since researchers from the CSIC Higher Council for Scientific Research of Spain have entered into the international project SynEry, an acronym in English, for bottom-up reconstruction of a synthetic erythrocyte.
Erythrocytes are more popularly known as red blood cells, they are the main component of blood and their function is to transport oxygen to the different types of tissues in the body.
The project intends to create artificial blood and in this way the problem of the shortage of blood donations would be solved, especially in situations of catastrophes or pandemics, in addition it would also avoid the risk of infections transmitted by transfusions in underdeveloped regions.
The main researcher is Arántzazu González-Campo, who has the responsibility of replicating the blood with most of its components so that it is viable, since it is a resource that becomes increasingly essential due to transmission diseases, along with it. This is Chiara Distefano and Sara Battista who are part of the FunNanoSurf research group, from ICMAB. This project is led by the University of Belgium and financed by the European Innovation Council with a total budget of 3.2 million euros for four years, which will end in March 2026.
