The “star” that stopped.

Researcher Mark Matney proposes that the Star of Bethlehem could be real, it could specifically be a comet recorded in Chinese texts and that it was visible from March or April more or less until June of the year 5 BC, with its peak, that is, its maximum brightness and the famous stop apparently around June 8 of that year 5 BC.

This places the birth of Jesus, or at least the sign that guided the wise men in the spring summer of 5 BC, not in winter and coincides with the historical consensus that Jesus must have been born between the year 6 and 4 BC, since when Herod was born he still had to be alive and also giving cruel orders.

But can a comet stop, obviously not, they are always moving and comets also travel very fast, so what Matthew says that the star was ahead of them in reference to the wise men until it stopped over the place where the child was, that is astronomically possible.

The comet would not stop, it would be on its journey through space, but visually from the Earth, depending on the geometry, the trajectory of the comet and the orbit of the Earth, we could see how it stops and remains in the same position for a time, which could easily be several days, this is possible if the comet approaches almost in a straight line towards the earth, radial trajectory, its angular movement, the change in position in the sky would be minimal or null temporarily.

You may have already seen this, probably in a short video like the one above, because it is a similar effect that has been seen with airplanes, it is the parallax effect in airplanes, which is an optical illusion, where a fast moving airplane appears to be still or even fly backwards when observed from a vehicle such as a car or another airplane, which moves that vehicle that is observing that apparently stationary airplane in the opposite direction and at a similar speed with the airplane that is in the background.

In the case of the comet, this creates the illusion of stopping in the same place in the sky for days or weeks, depending on the speed and distance, in astronomy it is called the position effect or apparent parking and in addition this effect has a bonus, especially for this story and that is that if the angle is frontal, the tail that points away from the sun by the solar wind could not be visible from Earth because it would be behind the nucleus of the comet aligned with our line of sight, so we would only see the coma of the comet, that is, the cloud gas around the nucleus of that comet, so visually it would appear to be a huge, bright star, although with diffuse edges.

This effect is not normal and rare, but it happens, in fact, there are some historical and not very old examples, for example, the comet Iras Araki Alcot in 1983, in addition, it passed very close to the Earth, 4.6 million kilometers from us, from the frontal angle, the tail was aligned with our line of sight, it was hidden behind the nucleus of the comet, looking mainly as a diffuse, bright coma, with no visible tail, it would look like a huge star, but with diffuse edges.

We also have the case of Comet Hyakutake from 1996, in its close passage it had phases with a faint tail due to the geometry in which it was located. Haley's comet in 1986 also had some moments where the tail was invisible due to the alignment with respect to the Earth, but this is important because this effect of apparent stopping in the sky only lasts a few days, it is not the entire observation time of the comet, in fact, the Chinese called this comet from 5 BC "broom star", which is what they call comets.

So if the Chinese called this object, this comet from 5 BC, an “astro broom,” it implies that the comet had a tail, but for a few days it could perfectly be found at that special angle that made us see it as if it were standing still and without a tail, as if it were a big bright star.
