The origins of the moon Titan.

The origins of the moon Titan.

SETI's latest statement on Titan could radically change the outlook on the search for life on Titan because what they are announcing is something quite astonishing. Titan is larger than Mercury, it is not the largest moon in the solar system, it is the second largest moon in the solar system, the largest is Ganymede on Jupiter, Titan is 5149 km in diameter, it is slightly larger than Mercury, although with less mass than Mercury, Mercury has a huge metallic core.

On February 11, SETI published a statement presenting a very interesting hypothesis about the origin of Titan, the study was led by SETI scientist Matija Ćuk, proposing that Titan was not formed in the traditional way like most moons, but rather arose from the merger of two older ancient moons and also relatively recently, between 100 to 500 million years ago, although the event places it rather at 400 million years.

According to this theory, before the Titan that we know there was a large moon called the “lost moon” and instead of being ejected or breaking up directly to form the rings, as had been proposed before, because the previous theory of the origin of the Titan rings is that they arose from an event about 100 million years ago from the collision of two moons, the computer simulations that this researcher has developed show that it is most likely that that ancient moon, that lost moon, ended up colliding and merging with a prototitan, that is, what would be the base of titan, a moon a little smaller than the current titan that ended up colliding with that lost moon.

During that merger, fragments were generated that were ejected to form the very strange moon Hyperion, by the way, there are people who are a little distressed because it has that curious effect of holes everywhere, Hyperion is not a small moon, it is about 400 km, it is irregular, but it is about 400 km on its longest side and about 200 km on the other, you cannot talk about mountains, it is a brutal chaotic terrain, the differences are brutal, the height differences I think were 20 km those highest cliffs is brutal.

According to this researcher, this researcher, apart from explaining the origin of this very strange moon, is that event that also destabilized the internal moons of Saturn through gravitational resonances with the titan that was eccentric after the collision, because Titan after that cosmic collision ended up in a strange orbit, in fact it gives as an argument the elongated centric orbit that titan currently has, an orbit that is rapidly recirculating because that is measured, that titan is varying from a very elongated to a circular one that is more stable and this indicates that it had a recent disturbance.

If its orbit were stable and had not been disturbed, it would not undergo this change that is being measured, this change from this elongated orbit to a circular orbit. Titan also has very few impact craters; it is believed that fusion would have renewed and erased Titan's ancient surface. According to this researcher, Titan would be similar to Callisto, which is a moon of Jupiter, Callisto is the third largest moon in the solar system.

Callisto is in Jupiter, it receives a little more heat than Titan and when you move away from the sun and you have a fairly large object like Titan, it is quite easy for you to accumulate gas, that is, to accumulate atmosphere, for example, Pluto is very small, but it has a slight atmosphere, enough to have a little cloud from time to time, another argument that it gives is the strange inclination of the orbit of Iapetus, another quite strange moon of Saturn and of course this Hyperion.

In summary, this research model that this scientist has developed solves several enigmas of the Saturn system with this catastrophic event, this collision that formed the current Titan and that gave rise to Hyperion and that gave rise to this alteration in the orbit of Titan and that gave rise to a titan loaded with organic matter on its surface, with hardly any impact craters, with a dense atmosphere and quite rare because Titan is one of the rarest objects in the solar system, after the Earth it is perhaps the rarest object, because on Titan it rains, on Titan there are large lakes, the largest of them is almost the size of a sea and has very complex atmospheric and liquid dynamics, apart from a large amount of organic matter.

But this puts us at a rather curious point and that is that if Titan arose from a collision about 400 million years ago, it turns out that, if there was life before on Titan, it was exterminated because the collision was so great that there was a reformation, there was a complete reset of Titan, not only was the original crust of Titan melted, there was a global change on that moon that must have exterminated any form of life, that is, if there is life now on Titan, which is a possibility that some They shuffle, it is less than 400 million years old, so it will not be very evolved.

This changes the perspective that some might have about life on Titan, and it may be in two different layers, the current Titan that we know has liquids on its surface, they are organic liquids, they are hydrocarbons, hydrocarbon lakes, there are rivers, it rains, it snows, there is a large amount of organic matter, if there is life there in those lakes, in those plains of organic matter on Titan, it will be a completely different life from the one we know, composed with different molecules than the ones we know and with a system of temperatures completely different from what we know.

If there were a Titanic being that we could greet, for them we would be beings of fire, literally, because they would have an average temperature of -170º below zero, we would be beings of lava, our blood for them. If a drop of our blood fell on the hand or body of those titans, our blood would melt them, literally burn them in reverse, and if they touched us, they would freeze us.

So it would be two completely different forms of life, but under the surface of Titan there is a mass of liquid water because the core of Titan has some heat and that heat converts the ice on Titan into liquid water, because on Titan there is a lot of water ice, a lot, a large part of the mountains and landscapes that we see on the surface of Titan are formed by water ice, what happens is that it is so cold that the water ice on Titan is like rocks.
