The Moon is First

The Moon is First

A realization is beginning to become clear, the Earth cannot be the only plan, and of course, Musk decided to accelerate everything and is going to start with the Moon. And for more than two decades, Mars was the ideological heart of SpaceX. Since the founding of the company, Elon Musk defended the red planet as humanity's plan B, a distant but necessary refuge in case the Earth fails. Only something changed.

Last weekend, Musk publicly indicated that SpaceX is prioritizing the Moon as an immediate destination, leaving Mars in the background in the short term, the new goal is to create a self-sustaining city on the Moon within approximately 10 years.

The justification is simple, direct and brutally pragmatic, while Mars requires a launch window every 26 months and a trip of about 6 months, the Moon is there. Just two days of travel, launch windows every 10 days, constant resupply and fast interaction. In Musk's own words, the top priority is to guarantee the future of civilization, the Moon is faster.

This change of focus was also confirmed by The Wall Street Journal, which revealed that SpaceX has already officially communicated to its investors about the new strategy, the Moon now goes first, Mars is for later. According to Elon Musk, building a self-sustaining city on the Moon would be viable and less than half the time needed for a Martian colony.

And in the game of civilizational survival, timing is everything, SpaceX still maintains plans for Mars, but the discourse now is different, before reaching the distant, it is necessary to ensure the next step, even so, there is a history that requires caution, moreover it is known for aggressive schedules and frequent changes.

Last year he even stated that a manned Mars mission could happen as early as the end of 2026 with the Starship, today that plan seems to have been pushed into the future, it is also unclear to what extent NASA supports the idea of a private lunar city, the agency faces delays in its own Artemis program meanwhile, geopolitical pressure increases, the Chinese lunar program is advancing at an accelerated pace and the moon is once again seen not only as a scientific destination, but as a strategic territory.

This change in space focus occurs in parallel to another profound transformation in the Musk Empire, following the acquisition of xIA by SpaceX, a move that valued the combined entity at more than 1.25 billion dollars, the company also began to look at space as a solution to the energy crisis of artificial intelligence.

The idea is to take data centers into orbit, where solar energy is nearly constant, independent of Earth's overloaded power grids. The proposal involves launching constellations of AI satellites functioning as data centers or orbitals while the company prepares for an estimated investment of $5 billion to finance both lunar expansion and this new computing infrastructure.

Building cities outside of Earth is one way to ensure the continuity of civilization, but there is always the risk of losing life itself as we know it.

When I was much younger, I learned that the optimist invented aeroplane, while the pessimist invented the parachute so that people can jump to safety if the aeroplane develops snags midair. Looking at the objectives of spaceX, could Elon be regarded as a pessimist or optimist ? I'm really thinking aloud

Of course he is an optimistic person, he has already invented many things.

What he also is, is visionary, you can't deny that.
