Relativistic Effects in Chemistry

avatar

Normally, we think of relativity as part of physics in general, not chemistry. So first, let's look at a chemical property of metal. This video does a great job of explaining why metals reflect light:

But one thing the video doesn't go into is why gold and copper don't reflect all of the visible spectrum. It's actually pretty interesting.

If gold did reflect blue light, it would violate causality and do something weird like push the electrons through time!

Instead, the fact that gold is constrained by relativity is referred to Relativistic Effects in chemistry. In fact, chemists are using computer models to find properties of elements with or without relativity. It's useful because certain properties appear only in certain configurations.

For example, mercury does not appear to have Relativistic Effects in its gas phase, but in its liquid phase, it allows the element to stay liquid at lower temperature, which is weird.

Wow, this is really new, I never heard of relativity in chemistry. I hope to get more of these info in the group you specified above. Thanks alot

Great post. Would this is a really interesting topic. Will the relativity effect be with respect to the metals, or the light they reflect or don't reflect. Pls I'll need a little help on more on this topic

Relativistic effects deal strictly with the speed of electron interaction, which causes it to manifest in the electromagnetic field, so it also indirectly manifests with photons.

Oh, I get, it actually has to do with the electrons in the outer shell of the metals which can be easily displaced, and the photons from the light hitting the metals surface. Thanks kool

So if gold and copper shine with a red or yellowish hue as the video states, do they absorb light at all? I wonder why those two contrasting metals? I remember that gold and silver are God's money so they must be God's metals too. Thanks my friend.

Great post. From my little chemistry knowledge, I knew mercury had some level of complexity, but I never knew it bad something to do with relativity. Thanks for sharing

Yeah, it's a fairly new idea. I think it's something they're discovering with computer modeling. They just try a bunch of simulations over and over, minus one constant, and see if it matches up with reality.

Really? That's a good one, there is really so much that we don't know about. 👍

Throughout my high-school days I was never taught in chemistry anything about relativity. I have learnt a new thing. Thanks

Wow, you got me stunned when you said electrons can be pushed through time. Please I would like to know more on how that can happen

I'm saying they cannot be pushed through time because of the restrictions of relativity. I'm just speculating what would happen without this restriction.

OK, I tot you meant they can be pushed through time. Thanks for the clarification

The metals are shiny because God forgot to disable ray tracing

Gold and copper absorbs some of the light and reflects only the reddish hues wavelengths because of the type of their electrons. Nice knowledge.

The only thing I think of relativity is it smells like BULL%$#@.
Earth is Flat. NASA are 100% PROVEN LIARS. 100%.
Pseudo Science. PLEASE Ask me for EVIDENCE!!!!!???
I think I am sill embarrassed I answered the cat facts post 2 times......
PEACE.
