Mathematical Fantasy vs. Reality

Here are two videos that are basically about the exact same concept. The first video simplifies the concept and wraps it in an interesting story. The second video explains it accurately, but is a lot more dry.

I like it when writers try to re-present extremely complicated ideas in a narrative that can hold your attention. But, of course, when you simplify something in order to make it more interesting for a broader audience, accuracy is lost.

Anyway, check it out ...

So, imagine a scenario where someone discovers a completely new mathematical fact that's hidden in plain sight. To them, it's so obvious and world-changing, it drives this person mad. Apparently that happens from time-to-time in mathematics. But usually the outcome isn't like the first video.

Funny thing is, every time it happens, it really is as world-shattering as the first video depicts. But it doesn't usually change the world all at once.

Fun fact. I would not have been able to post this article on the blockchain without imaginary (a.k.a. lateral) numbers.

Accuracy is the most important thing ever.

the first film is high budget fiction, very well done from cinematographic point of view. the second series is a wonderful guide to understand "lateral" numbers. Highly educational for people who are interested in math. I enjoyed both.

+thats how a punch of lateral and real numbers can look like if you iterate them over and over and over again following simple rules :)))
