RE: Hunting for Dad: The Failings of AI

You are viewing a single comment's thread:

I say this with no exaggeration. One of the deepest, most personal posts I've read on HIVE. Possibly one of the most personal things I've read on AI.

Don't go looking for your father in the prompts. He isn't there. He'll never be there. You have inherited his hope, clearly, but do not place it where it is not useful!

I don't want to lose you to some sort of AI psychosis. I know you're intellectually more sophisticated than that. As a man, this post made me emotional, because it gave me something to "look up to", the monument of a man who clearly meant, and continues to mean, oh so much for you.

I feel the need to remind you that his memories will continue to give you many gifts. I still have the PlayStation 3 my grandfather gave me for my 21st birthday. I will keep it even if it fails to function. It's an artefact, a physical element of the reminder. Gaming, for me, is something that connects me to my grand parents, because my PlayStations were always at their house. While my grandmother struggled with cancer, I was in the spare room, playing Final Fantasy VII on the PlayStation pretending to be a hero.

She'd tell me not to read more than one book at a time, lest I get the stories mixed up. I still stand by that, and I do the same now even with music. I'll listen to an album start to finish, thank you very much.

I may be rambling a lot here, and sharing and relating my own experience, because I can't even come close to feeling the way you feel about yours. I never will, no one will, but through writing like this, someone else can feel a portion of your affection for a father gone, and the preciousness to which you ascribe to all other life.

Thanks friend. I know you get it. I think it's similar to how my Mum has gone looking for him in all the photo he took, the disorganized albums in his Capture One files. You can't have the real thing but there's an essence somewhere. I find it fascinating how technology intersects with our human selves - we are cyborgs in this way, inseparable from the machine. Don't worry I won't go truly hunting - it was an interesting exercise, and food for thought, that's all.

I am humbled by your comment - deeply!

I sent you a message on discord. I took the first photo and tidied it up in Photoshop. If you have a higher res version, send it to me, I'll make it better, tastefully. :)
