James Cameron gave an interview in which he spoke about AI. I'll be harsh, but everything points to him being dead wrong. There are many indications that our grandchildren's entertainment content will be drastically different from what we know. For this generation, AI-generated content is the absolute norm, just like the internet was for us (remember when parents and grandparents complained about playing games on their computers?). Our children's generation, if we sensitize them to culture and pop culture, might stick with this trend a bit longer... But I bet my grandchildren will look at me the way I would look at my great-great-grandmother (for comparison, my great-grandmother threw grenades at GERMAN, not NAZI, trains during World War II). You think I'm exaggerating? Huh, listen to how children talk to their grandparents. It started a few years ago. My generation and I had more in common, even about movies and games, than the current generation.
Ironically, I was talking about this with my partner yesterday, and she noticed it herself. She also pointed out a few trends, albeit unconsciously, from the series Altered Carbon (I highly recommend it, especially the book), where AI-generated culture was one of the themes. People have changed their understanding of culture, absorbing culturally similar products created by large companies and corporations. Well, an excess of choices (psychology tells us that 2, 3, or max. 5 available options are best for us) combined with attractive and flashy advertising is disastrous for the younger generation. I'm not surprised they fall into this trap. If we were in their shoes, we would have similar problems. Don't overuse smartphones for your children and devote time to them, because this mess stems from precisely that. A culture created quickly, especially by AI, is worthless and simply harmful.

[People don't want to go to the cinema to see good films]
Since I started with the controversy, I'll take this topic further. So many people complain that original films aren't being made, but when one does hit theaters, no one wants to see it. For the record, I don't go to these movies either (because I don't want to travel to another city), but I haven't complained about it for years. It's been about the second or third time I heard this argument and decided I was a hypocrite, and I don't want to be one. It's easier to watch such films on streaming, and because Covid-19 has made my habits a widespread, global trend, movie theaters are facing a bigger problem than ever.
The problem isn't Marvel's fault. On the contrary, Marvel and the criticized films have slowed this trend. People are simply going to the cinema less. Ticket prices are rising, time is getting shorter, we have more and more responsibilities, and we increasingly have the conditions to watch films that are important to us in the right conditions. These aren't the days of our childhood, when decent movie-watching equipment cost a fortune. The new generation differs from us and our parents, even more than we differ from our parents and grandparents. Due to the slower pace of life and the advancement of technology, we were able to talk to some of our grandparents about... I don't know, Rocky, Rambo, war movies, gangster movies, books, and many other topics that go far beyond pop culture. They could even say something about computers, start a topic, like people interested in everyday curiosities, technology, or having such partners (my partner, for example, after a few years of dating, is increasingly interested in topics that were unappealing to her at the beginning).
Other factors, such as changing tastes, are also important. After all, there are names and topics that attract more money. The topic of space will remain attractive for thousands of years to come, so people will watch such productions. There are plenty of reasons, from soul-pleasing with beautiful views to philosophical questions or simple curiosity. Blockbusters may have started making money thanks to movie theaters (as they were new in the days of Jaws and Star Wars), but movie theaters have benefited from this, as have the millions of people who have found jobs thanks to them. Names like Christopher Nolan and James Cameron (or films like Top Gun: Maverick) also attract people from various demographics to movie theaters, which in turn earns them money. There are as many reasons as there are for space movies, if not more. Our tastes and habits have simply changed, and the younger generation has new toys... Just like many parents complained about computers and the internet :).

James Cameron udzielił wywiadu, w którym wypowiedział się na temat AI. Będę okrutny, ale raczej wszystko wskazuje na to, że się wybitnie myli. Wiele wskazuje na to, że content rozrywkowy naszych wnuków będzie drastycznie odbiegał od tego, co znamy. Już dla obecnego pokolenia content generowany przez AI to totalna norma, jak dla nas był internet (pamiętacie, jak rodzice i dziadkowie narzekali na granie na komputerze?). Pokolenie naszych dzieci, o ile uczulimy je na kulturę i popkulturę, może pociągną ten trend nieco dłużej... Ale stawiam, że moje wnuki będą patrzyły na mnie, jak ja bym patrzył na mojego pra-pra babcię (dla porównania - pra babcia rzucała granatami w NIEMIECKIE, nie NAZISTOWSKIE pociągi podczas 2 wojny światowej). Mówicie że przesadzam? Huh, to posłuchajcie sobie, jak dzieci rozmawiają z dziadkami. To się zaczęło parę lat temu. Ja i przedstawiciele mojego pokolenia, mieliśmy więcej wspólnych tematów, nawet tych o filmach, czy grach niż obecne pokolenie.
Jak na ironię, wczoraj rozmawiałem o tym ze swoją partnerką i sama to zauważyła. Sama też wskazała parę trendów, choć nieświadomie, z serialu Altered Carbon (bardzo polecam, zwłaszcza książkę), gdzie kultura generowana przez AI była jednym z wątków. Ludzie zmienili pojmowanie kultury, chłonąc wyroby kulturo-podobne tworzone przez duże firmy i korporacje. Cóż, nadmiar wyborów (psychologia mówi, że 2, 3, max 5 dostępnych opcji jest dla nas najlepszy) przy atrakcyjnej i krzykliwej reklamie, to fatalna sprawa dla młodego pokolenia. Nie dziwię się, że wpadają w te sidła. My będąc na ich miejscu, mielibyśmy podobne problemy. Nie nadużywajcie smartfonów dla dzieci oraz poświęcajcie im czas, bo ten syf bierze się właśnie z tego. Kultura tworzona na szybko, szczególnie przez AI, jest bezwartościowa i zwyczajnie szkodliwa.

[Ludzie nie chcą chodzić do kina na dobre filmy]
Skoro zacząłem od kontrowersji, pociągnę ten temat dalej. Tylu ludzi narzeka na to, że nie powstają oryginalne filmy, ale jak już taki trafi do kin, to nikt go nie chce oglądać. Żeby nie było, ja też nie chodzę na te filmy (bo nie chce mi się jeździć do innego miasta), ale od lat już na to nie narzekam. Mniej więcej od momentu, gdy po raz 2 lub 3 usłyszałem ten argument i uznałem, że jestem hipokrytą, a nie chcę nim być. Takie filmy wygodniej obejrzeć na streamingu, a że przez Covid-19, moje przyzwyczajenia stały się dość powszechnym, światowym trendem, to kina mają problem większy niż kiedykolwiek.
Problem nie wynika z winy Marvela. Wręcz przeciwnie, Marvel i krytykowane filmy, spowolniły ten trend. Ludzie po prostu mniej chodzą do kin. Ceny biletów rosną, czasu jest coraz mniej, mamy coraz więcej obowiązków, coraz częściej mamy takie warunki, że możemy oglądać ważne dla nas filmy w odpowiednich warunkach. To nie czasy naszego dzieciństwa, że porządny sprzęt do oglądania filmów kosztował gruby szmal. Nowe pokolenie różni się od nas i naszych rodziców, jeszcze mocniej niż my od naszych rodziców i dziadków. Przez wolniejsze tempo życia i rozwój technologii, byliśmy w stanie pogadać z niektórymi dziadkami o... Nie wiem, Rockym, Rambo, filmach wojennych, kinie gangsterskim, książkach i wielu innych tematach, daleko wykraczających poza popkulturę. Nawet mogli coś tam powiedzieć na temat komputerów, zacząć jakiś temat, tak jak ludzie interesujący się ciekawostkami z codziennego życia, technologią lub mającymi takich partnerów (moja partnerka np. po kilku latach związku, coraz chętniej interesuje się tematami, które były dla niej nieatrakcyjne na początku relacji).
Nie bez znaczenia są też inne czynniki, np. zmiana gustu. W końcu są nazwiska i tematy, które przyciągają większe pieniądze. Temat kosmosu jeszcze przez tysiące lat będzie atrakcyjny, więc ludzie będą oglądali takie produkcje. Powodów jest mnóstwo, od ucieszenia duszy fajnymi dla siebie widokami po kwestie filozoficzne lub zwykłą ciekawość. Blockbustery co prawda zaczęły zarabiać dzięki kinom (jak były nowością w czasach Jaws i Star Wars), ale kina na tym skorzystały, tak jak miliony ludzi, którzy dostali dzięki nim pracę. Nazwiska jak Christopher Nolan, czy James Cameron (lub filmy jak Top Gun: Maverick), też przyciągają do kin ludzi z różnych grup demograficznych, przez co zarabiają pieniądze.
