Sometimes you stop a bit and start to think about your life and past. Last week it was an important experience for me, since my whole family was there. That means not only good and happy moments but also periods of throwing old problems on the table. It is so interesting to see the version of my brother from our childhood. As a young brother, he has a view of our life like the forever victim of our fights and also the less prefered from our parents between the two of us. Of course, he lacks a lot about my point of view and so much of his memory fails, creating an alternative version focusing on him always. But also brought some personal memories that are interesting to see how I got better or worse from the old times.

For a millennium, I got lucky to have access to a personal computer during my teens. And somehow my discrete and introvert characteristic always moved me towards social isolation. I think that if I were a teen in the current era, I would be lost. Even during those times, I got into virtual socialization much more than real socialization in High School. How many times have I been disappointed in meeting girls in real life that I met in the virtual world? I got some virtual girlfriends who stayed virtual until we stopped talking to each other. I also spent some nights playing MMORPGs like Ultima Online.

That was the beginning of the internet, and it has changed so much since then. Even during my university years, I saw changes. I remember in the beginning, I had to use so much to find scientific articles in real scientific journals made of paper. Still, before my diploma, that changed slowly in a pure virtual way. Now I don't know anyway that reads physical scientific articles. So, from the writing to reading these articles is all mediated by a computer.

I had a typewriter at home before the computer, my letter was always bad so the assignments made with a machine like that was something that made my work readable. Many teachersare complaining about that. After the computers, I think I never used a typewriter again. For big projects, we used poster boards and decal letters. And in the university, before we had access to computer projectors, we used to print slides in transparent paper to use in overhead projectors. Now we don't print anything anymore; everything is sent online. So many actions can be done online, like banking or filing taxes. We don't need to spend time in long queues in person anymore to solve problems. We shop for everything with some clicks to be delivered at home. But still, my life changed since then.

I spend so much time with my family, my girls playing and learning. I have some virtual socialization still, especially here on Hive, but during my free time with family, I am totally absent. I was almost 98% absent from Hive last week when I was with the whole family. I am in the virtual world, but in a healthier way, we need social interactions. Also, going to the movies is different than watching everything at home. We need to go to the places and experience everything with our eyes. It is good to see that as a person, I have gotten wiser and understand more about myself.

Technology has really evolved but in all,I still feel that balancing our social and virtual lives is the goal and we will be fine ..
Let's not use technology as a tool to substitute real relationships

Virtual socialization is good for a things, you can meet someone with your same interests even if he's far away and otherwise you wouldn't be able to meet... Like if I like to collect stamps, how many chances at school or work I meet someone with the same hobby?

It's funny because we did not have the Internet available to the public when I was growing up, so computers weren't even a household thing either. So. we didn't have those things to keep us inside and unsocial. Game systems were coming into there own when I was a teenager though and started a trend I think.

Getting out and socializing is super important. I used to not do it and my only interaction was with my wife and those I dealt with online. It was not good for me. I finally broke myself free from being online so much and got myself active offline again and it has helped me so much mentally and physically.

Like I said with me was during my teens. during my under 10s the virtual world was just about Atari and other initial videogames, but still we required to be with other kids to play with! But my childhood had a lot of sports (especially soccer, our passion in Brazil) and kids games like hide and seek even living in an apartment building. I think kids nowadays are more exposed to a diversity of options to access virtual world that we didn't had. Probably I would be lost if I grew in an environment like we find in most homes today

Yeah the internet and technology provide us many facilities to do things easily at home but still living in real life with family and friends gives us a different kind of pleasure 🙂
