To Deet or not to Deet.

  We spend so much during cold and snowy days here that we get into March anticipating a lot of summer. We get excited when temperatures start to rise above 0 Celsius, the Sun gets stronger, and we can start wearing short sleeves and showing our legs again outdoors. But then we expose our skin to the next harmful element: mosquitoes. They are annoying, especially because we have had so much rain in the last 2 months. On one hand, we get tall grass, and we get as green as we have ever gotten. But they appear as killer machines, making us and our kids vulnerable. And every year, I start to philosophize which repellent is the best. So here are my current findings until now.

  This mosquito season started badly for my youngest. She is having bad allergic reactions to their bites. She is getting swollen regions because of them. Two days ago was a bite near the eye, which made her face get terrible, it looked like we punched her, my wife even went through a whole interrogation by a retired officer. We were using Picaridin 20% until last year, when we had some bad experiences on a camping trip, so we bought the Deep Woods OFF!, which uses Deet. We had it still from last summer and started using it again.

  However, DEET concentrations over 10% aren't very safe for kids up to 12 years old. It lasts longer, but it brings potential problems since this age can absorb more, and some studies showed that it can be neurotoxic and affect even bones and hormone development . So why did my usage with picaridin last summer fail?

  Well, I was reading that how both compounds work is a bit different. While DEET creates a "gas environment" between our skin and the mosquitoes, they can't even get closer, while picaridin still allows them to get to our skin; however, they just give up and go away when touching it. So we would still feel the mosquitoes close enough to bother us, but we wouldn't get bitten. However, I remember my kids getting bitten. There are two possible explanations if we consider the compound effective. The first one is that we were using a spray solution, so the spray, if not used well, can leave some gaps in the skin,n and this way mosquitoes land and bite these gaps. The second is that perhaps we needed to apply more often since the 12h protection that they sell doesn't work if kids are sweating a lot. Anyways, the solution for that would be using a liquid lotion with the compound so the gaps are easier to avoid and reapply more often.

  So basically it is a game that we play dealing with high toxicity of compounds against the possibility of allergy reaction, diseases, and annoying itchiness. I guess it is a war difficult to win. At least we know that we will have no more than 2 more months of these annoying insects, which I hate more than anything else in the bug world. You can bring your spider fear; it is nothing compared to how I hate these bugs!

 Passamos tanto tempo aqui durante os dias frios e nevados que, em março, já estamos ansiosos pelo verão. Ficamos animados quando as temperaturas começam a subir acima de 0°C, o sol fica mais forte e podemos voltar a usar blusas de manga curta e mostrar as pernas ao ar livre. Mas aí expomos nossa pele a outro elemento nocivo: os mosquitos. Eles são irritantes, principalmente porque choveu muito nos últimos dois meses. Por um lado, a grama está alta e tudo fica mais verde do que nunca. Mas, por outro, eles parecem máquinas de matar, deixando a nós e às nossas crianças vulneráveis. E todo ano, começo a filosofar sobre qual repelente é o melhor. Aqui estão minhas descobertas até o momento.

  Esta temporada de mosquitos começou mal para minha filha mais nova. Ela está tendo reações alérgicas graves às picadas. Ela está com inchaço em algumas partes do corpo por causa delas. Há dois dias, ela foi picada perto do olho, o que deixou o rosto dela horrível, parecia que tínhamos dado um soco nela. Minha esposa até passou por um interrogatório completo com um oficial aposentado. Usávamos Picaridina 20% até o ano passado, quando tivemos algumas experiências ruins em uma viagem de acampamento, então compramos o Deep Woods OFF!, que usa DEET. Ainda tínhamos o produto do verão passado e começamos a usá-lo novamente.

 No entanto, concentrações de DEET acima de 10% não são muito seguras para crianças de até 12 anos. O efeito dura mais tempo, mas traz problemas potenciais, já que nessa idade a absorção é maior, e alguns estudos mostraram que pode ser neurotóxico e afetar até mesmo os ossos e o desenvolvimento hormonal. Então, por que meu uso de picaridina no verão passado falhou?

 Bem, eu estava lendo que o funcionamento dos dois compostos é um pouco diferente. Enquanto o DEET cria um "ambiente gasoso" entre a nossa pele e os mosquitos, eles não conseguem se aproximar, enquanto a picaridina ainda permite que eles cheguem à nossa pele; No entanto, eles simplesmente desistem e vão embora ao toque. Então, ainda sentíamos os mosquitos perto o suficiente para nos incomodar, mas não éramos picados. Contudo, lembro-me de meus filhos sendo picados. Há duas explicações possíveis se considerarmos o produto eficaz. A primeira é que estávamos usando uma solução em spray, e o spray, se não aplicado corretamente, pode deixar algumas falhas na pele, permitindo que os mosquitos pousem e piquem. A segunda é que talvez precisássemos reaplicar com mais frequência, já que a proteção de 12 horas que vendem não funciona se as crianças estiverem suando muito. De qualquer forma, a solução seria usar uma loção líquida com o composto, assim as falhas seriam mais fáceis de evitar e a reaplicação mais frequente.

  Basicamente, é um jogo que jogamos lidando com a alta toxicidade de compostos contra a possibilidade de reações alérgicas, doenças e coceira irritante. Acho que é uma guerra difícil de vencer. Pelo menos sabemos que não teremos mais do que dois meses com esses insetos irritantes, que odeio mais do que qualquer outra coisa no mundo dos insetos. Pode trazer seu medo de aranhas; Isso não é nada comparado ao quanto eu odeio esses insetos!
