The Hantavirus outbreak: some updates after one week.

Exactly 7 days ago, I posted about my concerns about the current way world authorities were dealing with the current hantavirus outbreak. I wasn't alone on that. During this week, Nature published a news article about some concerns about the little information available about the human-to-human contamination of this Andean strain of the hantavirus. So still the respiratory or oral secretions are the most plausible mechanism, as I mentioned about aerosol/droplet that was published in that 2020 article mentioned in the last post. But the efficiency of the transmission is still very debatable.

The Figure 1 showing the timeline of the 8 confirmed cases (Palacios, 2026)
The genomes of the 8 confirmed cases until now were published a couple of days ago, and it brings interesting results. In my last post, we had 5 cases confirmed, now 8 cases confirmed plus 2 other probable cases and another one inconclusive, according to the latest report by WHO. The genome comparison of the virus in the patients confirmed that one patient brought to the ship the virus probably from a zoonotic contact, and there was human-to-human contamination, since the virus genome was very similar to that found in these 8 confirmed cases.
Still, people are getting a bit freaked out since it is normal to see hantaviruses in other places, including here in Canada. I saw a post on social media of people who had contact with mice and started to panic. Of course, we need to be careful when touching a wild animal like a mouse, because although the other hantavirus strains don't spread human-to-human like the Andean strain, still can be problematic to get the disease caused by this virus.
However, since the incubation period of the virus is long, the number of people getting quarantined is getting larger and larger. The last time I published, there were 3 Canadians in quarantine; now this number has risen to 36, with 26 of them reported to be on the same airplane of a confirmed case. Meanwhile, the US already has 41 people in quarantine.

In one week, we had some big updates, more confirmed cases, more information about the genomics of the virus in the outbreak, and also more people in quarantine. Let's see how things will change next week. I hope that my next post about this will show a closure for this story. But for now, we will keep checking what is happening.

The Andean hantavirus is peculiar in that it can spread in humans. That long incubation period is a huge problem because it allows it to spread long before the person can end up in quarantine. I've dealt with hantavirus in the southwestern US around the four corners are, it's a scary virus. Not too long ago it killed Gene Hackman's wife as they lived in Santa Fe and must have had mice. Mice and rats have to be handled expeditiously and their dropping treated with 50% bleach solution before cleanup.
I hope this is the end of this particular outbreak, but it goes to show you just how scary this class of virus is. Here in the US we are lucky that the strain can't spread between people, but it carries a 50% mortality rate and we still don't have any treatments for any of the viruses.
Last thing we need is a pandemic of hantavirus after dealing with COVID...
And probably it will be way worse than COVID the mortality rate is not something good that we will be able to deal well! Lets see if they solve.

I've read about the genius who knew he had been in contact with the virus and instead of quarantine he went to a wedding with 100+ persons... Lol
What a jerk!
In fact, that's how SARs in Hong Kong started in 2003. Patient zero came from China to Hong Kong to attend a wedding, and they identified him staying in a hotel and spreading the virus. Not sure if he knew he was infected or not.
I can't blame someone if he's not aware of having being in contact or to be infected, but if you are aware, Jesus... They should be considered responsible for consequences infections
History repeats always… people not respecting quarantine rules 😂
Lol that I didn’t read about ! But not suprising!
Ruhi Çenet, that one
The good thing is that health organisations and people worldwide are taking such viruses more seriously now (with Covid still fresh in our memories). I'd imagine this would have been waved away and dismissed pre covid.
It is a bit… the problem is still the people that don’t feel sick and decide to go to public events
most people here ignored Hantavirus news until a few days ago some "meme" said Hantavirus would make people penis shrink 3" more. Then everyone started to pay some attention on it.
I guess people are not afraid to die but they are afraid of shrinkage lol
