How many diplomas are needed in life?

In past posts, I already showed a bit about how I ended up where I am professionally speaking. I wanted to be a scientist since I was a kid, of course, the term scientist is too generic and I had to focus on what type of science I preferred, which was biology. The career of a scientist demands specialization, so a long time studying. After finishing High School I decided to join the Biology school. Biology also is generic, you can study plants, fishes, fungi, bacteria, dinosaurs, and even the dumbest animals, humans. In University you have different classes that give you a bit of an overview of each area. You get more knowledge about a specific field when you start to work and study more, for that is necessary a graduate program, master and/or doctorate. Now I am a doctor more formally known as Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology, so after 4 years and a bit more in Biology school, plus 2 years of Master's studies and more 4 years in the Doctorate, what does that mean?

I completed my doctorate in 2017 and after that, I could start applying for jobs that require this title, university professor, principal investigator, or you can start a post-doc which isn't considered a title, it is a research job with cheap payment for the research institutions. There isn't a diploma associated with that, however, we keep studying. So after all these years studying I can't stop studying, since in Science we need to keep ourselves updated. Studying so much allows me a better salary. Maybe comparing with a biologist just with a Bachelor's degree is higher, but many other fields that don't require so much time studying it are comparable. So after studying 6 more years after university and getting two more diplomas, we can try to get a position that pays around a junior engineer ( sometimes a junior engineer gets even more salary compared to a Professor or PI). Because of that, I lost many colleagues to study again through university for another career, which is the only option if you want another diploma, where I am currently. I could also do another diploma or another specialization, but it is challenging, after studying so much during these 6 years I want to avoid that unless you are stuck without a job. When I was in my Ph.D. I was also teaching Biology in a public High School in Rio de Janeiro, even my supervisor was a bit against that, but a Ph.D. in Brazil doesn't have a salary, it is a public fixed income controlled by the government usually that ends exactly after 2 years (for master students) and 4 years (for Ph.D. students). After this period it will end despite your project's current status. For example, my Ph.D. lasted more than 3 months than expected, but the monthly payments ended after the 4-year target, so I stayed 3 months without payments. It can't be called a salary, since master's and Ph.D. students are not considered work and are not included in the regular country's labor laws. So vacations and other benefits depend on your supervisor to allow them. The only "benefit" that was created not much ago is for women that get pregnant they get their master's or Ph.D. frozen, so the monthly payment ending is postponed. Many supervisors want you fully dedicated to their project, but if you want to raise a family that is impossible with the monthly payment (During my time it was BRL 2,200.00, this is now it got a bit raised) and I was paying BRL 1800,00 to rent an apartment that I was sharing with my wife. So luckily I got this job, only 16 hours per week of teaching. During that time they offered all the teachers the possibility to attend a post-graduate program in education for 1 year. Initially, I thought it was a good idea since it was free of cost for me. But I was too occupied with the Ph.D. and couldn't give the attention required for the course. It was too much for me and I quit in the end since I had to write the final project for two different programs. I gave more focus to the Ph.D. of course.

Estudar tanto me permite um salário melhor.

I am in a stage of my life that for me now is enough for a new diploma, I want to avoid that since it demands time and dedication and I am currently exhausted. However, I won't discard doing that in the future. One thing that I foresee is maybe doing a specialization to be able to teach here in Canada, the place where I live now. My teaching license in Brazil isn't validated here unless I do that course, so if I need or want to go back to teach at a school here, I will need this Diploma. But otherwise, I don't need more time spent in a classroom as a student, maybe to learn another language then? But there is one lesson, the number of diplomas doesn't mean a better salary or job.

Clearly. Good conclusion. I enrolled in my third Master degree fully aware that it won't lead to a higher salary. Yet I wanted it to provide the framework and motivation for me to learn a new area.

wow third Master !! That's really unique! The important is that we are happy with our decisions, and even if we aren't, it is ok. I have a friend that went through Master's and PhD's and after that she saw that she was going in an automatic mode, but she never noticed that she wanted another path, now I think she is happy, it has been a while that I don't talk with her, but at least last time it looked like.

Well, as long as we live we strive to do better and become better persons. It's not as much about the outcome (although the outcome does provide useful feedback) as much as bout the flow - feeling that we are not wasting opportunities and trying our best

Hehe. So you are exhausted 😅. May be it's the reason for saying education is a non stop process and it will never end. You gained a lot but in my case I am yet to gain some more.

I know !! You are just in the beginning ... it isn't an easy path, and you will see many friends with less studies with more money, but focus on what you want.

Hehe. I have Hive and I am lucky in this case. Moreover I gained a moderate amount of knowledge about finance. Moreover I already own little amount of cryptocurrency. I am thinking to get success in multiple ways. Keep doing study is the primary think and all the remaining plans are for backup.

If they clearly give you a higher salary it's worthwhile. After my doctorate I would never go back to school.... Eternal burnout! Congrats on the PhD! You may have to do some more for that teaching license in Canada though. It sucks when one country doesn't accept credentials from another or at least have a set pathway that it can be easily achieved if the candidate is competent.

Don't tell me, after you are almost finishing Ph.D. you have many psychological problems lol , many people cry a lot in that process. Some people suffer more, my wife has a law degree and she it is a bit tough for her to validate her diploma in here, she is still trying to gather resources for that ( time + money). At least with a diploma in science-related fields is easy to get a job everywhere, research institutes around the world accept them hehe.

i think both are important getting diplomas and collecting money since also getting paid a good amount is a necessity in this life. Keep it up fren wish you all the best👍

wait- i didn't know you had a PhD 😳😳 and in bioinformatics roo. if you met my sister she would be ecstatic and would not stop asking you questions (she's in biology and is planning to pursue a microbiology license here and also planning to get a master's

whoah you sure about that? because i feel like she'll be asking career advice at this point and thesis topics because she's at that point in her undergrad studies

The idea of a qualification in a country not being accepted without another diploma in another country sucks. We are not talking of local history here which could be peculiar to individual county but science which is not. Well, each country to her own rules.
I love the conclusion of this piece because truly more diploma doesn't translate to more money.
