Hop little bunny: finding a bunny nest at home.

Kids at home discover things that I didn't know. Two days ago, my daughter showed me that she saw something moving below the leaves of our basement window's well. Our basement is below the ground, so there is a type of well; the depth is around 50 cm, and I never cleaned that place to remove the leaves. At first, I was scared that it could be a snake. Rattlesnakes are common here, so I needed to be careful.

So I got a broom and started to sweep it to remove the leaves and tried to find the probable animal there. Finally, I could find it! Near the walls of the well, I could see some fur balls hiding; one of them could see the face partially. They were small cotton-tailed bunnies. I started to Google immediately to check what to do.

The first info was to just leave them alone, since I wasn't sure how developed they were or if their mommy was coming back. I tried at least to count them; 3 of them at least, what I saw. The other info that I read was that to try to help them if they were active trying to escape the well. Since they were trying to hide, I just covered them and left them alone. I just had to protect that area of the backyard since my dog was curious also. So I just used the iron fence that I put in areas where I fix holes that my dog digs sometimes to recover the grass.

The next day, ay my wife sent me pictures of the windows from the basement and showed me the bunnies trying to hop and escape. They were ready to go to their lives; they were all fully developed. And of course my wife waited for me to get home to take the next step, since I am the one always to solve this type of problem. So I saw some tips to get a wood board to help them to escape. But when I got home, they were hidden again. Initially,y I started to build a cardboard pie, but they would probably tryagain thee next day only. I was afraid that they needed to find food and water. So I just wore my thick gardener gloves and got two out. Where was the third one?

There is a pipe there,e and my daughter thought that she saw the bunny falling there, but the pipe goes until the house foundation, and even with a flashlight I couldn't see the bottom. I almost gave up. But I decided to remove a bit of leaves from the well since there was a lot. While doing that,t I found the third one and put him out. So all three bunnies were rescued, and they just went out of my backyard through the fence.

My daughter got a bit sad because she thought that the bunnies would stay longer, and she even got mad at me. I explained to her that wild animals are meant to be free; maybe they will return later and use our home as a nest again. Who knows? I like this idea of my home being a safe spot for wildlife,e even with a dog that likes to hunt them.

Crianças em casa descobrem coisas que eu não sabia. Há dois dias, minha filha me mostrou que viu algo se mexendo embaixo das folhas do poço de luz da janela do nosso porão. Nosso porão fica abaixo do nível do solo, então existe uma espécie de poço; a profundidade é de cerca de 50 cm, e eu nunca limpei aquele lugar para remover as folhas. A princípio, fiquei com medo de que pudesse ser uma cobra. Cascavéis são comuns por aqui, então eu precisava ter cuidado.

Um dos coelhinhos

Então peguei uma vassoura e comecei a varrer para remover as folhas e tentei encontrar o provável animal ali. Finalmente, consegui encontrá-lo! Perto das paredes do poço, vi algumas bolas de pelo escondidas; em uma delas, dava para ver o rosto parcialmente. Eram pequenos coelhos-de-cauda-de-algodão. Comecei a pesquisar no Google imediatamente para ver o que fazer.

A primeira informação que li foi para deixá-los em paz, já que eu não tinha certeza do quão desenvolvidos eles estavam ou se a mãe deles voltaria. Tentei pelo menos contá-los; vi pelo menos três. A outra informação que li foi para tentar ajudá-los se estivessem tentando escapar do poço. Como eles estavam tentando se esconder, eu apenas os cobri e os deixei em paz. Eu só precisava proteger aquela área do quintal, já que meu cachorro também estava curioso. Então, usei a cerca de ferro que coloco nas áreas onde conserto os buracos que meu cachorro cava às vezes para recuperar a grama.

No dia seguinte, minha esposa me mandou fotos das janelas do porão e me mostrou os coelhinhos tentando pular e escapar. Eles estavam prontos para seguir suas vidas; estavam todos completamente desenvolvidos. E, claro, minha esposa esperou que eu chegasse em casa para tomar a próxima providência, já que sou eu quem sempre resolve esse tipo de problema. Então, vi algumas dicas para usar uma tábua de madeira para ajudá-los a escapar. Mas quando cheguei em casa, eles estavam escondidos novamente. Inicialmente, comecei a construir uma espécie de torta de papelão, mas eles provavelmente tentariam novamente no dia seguinte. Eu estava com medo de que precisassem encontrar comida e água. Então, simplesmente coloquei minhas luvas grossas de jardineiro e tirei dois de lá. Onde estava o terceiro?

Há um cano ali, e minha filha achou que tinha visto o coelho cair ali, mas o cano vai até a fundação da casa, e mesmo com uma lanterna eu não conseguia ver o fundo. Quase desisti. Mas decidi remover algumas folhas do poço, já que havia muitas. Enquanto fazia isso, encontrei o terceiro e o coloquei para fora. Então, os três coelhinhos foram resgatados e simplesmente saíram do meu quintal pela cerca.

Minha filha ficou um pouco triste porque achou que os coelhinhos ficariam mais tempo e até ficou brava comigo. Eu expliquei a ela que animais selvagens devem ser livres; talvez eles voltem mais tarde e usem nossa casa como ninho novamente. Quem sabe? Gosto da ideia de minha casa ser um refúgio seguro para a vida selvagem, mesmo com um cachorro que gosta de caçá-los.
