Patience - PS3 vs PS4
It's no secret I'm a patient gamer, at least when it comes to Playstation.
I don't mind being years or a generation late to the party if it means I get to pay less and have more fun.
In 2017 I got a PS3 for my birthday from my dad. I was just 16 and that console felt next gen for me. Before that I was gaming on a Wii, PS2 and a really weak i3 laptop from 2014.
The PS3 felt like a revelation. Finally I could play some "demanding" games like Battlefield 4 and GTA V. Finally I had something more modern than a 2001 and a 2005 console.
This is a photo of what I owned by the end of 2017... Except for the PS4.
That PS4 belonged to my good friend Ildo, he was staying over so we decided to put his PS4 there to pose for my picture.
That PS4 felt magical. The menus were so pretty, the games looked so incredibly sharp in my then 1080p TV, it felt... modern.
And now, thanks to adulthood and finally having some money, it's my turn.
I recently got this PS4 Slim for just R$1350, with an original controller, 1TB of internal storage and 3 months of warranty.
I couldn't've asked for a better deal. Slim PS4s of just 500GB usually go for R$1700, so R$1350 is a great deal. It's just over $200 USD... That may seem excessive for the lot of you in first world countries, but considering that the PS4 came out for $1815 USD here (the price Ildo paid, he's insane) - $200 is chump change.
So I'm here to share my experience.
For some reason, I found out I owned some PS4 games... How? No clue whatsoever. These games are Alien Isolation, Mega Man Collection and uhh a couple more that I completely forgot rn but they're there.
Alien Isolation is an awesome game so that was a welcome surprise, and I'm always up for a round of MegaMan 2.
Shakey photo
A couple years back I borrowed Ildo's PS4 to play The Last of Us... I didn't actually beat it but since I was using a PS Plus trial my save files are still here! It's pretty crazy.
Despite owning a PS3, I never actually signed up for PS Plus before this PS4 Slim... It just wasn't really all that useful.
The PS3 had free online and I never felt the need for cloud saves. Now after owning multiple Xbox's I can totally see the use for cloud saves... So, besides multiplayer and the game selection of PS Plus Deluxe, I'll keep signing up for when I get a PS5 and I don't have to lose any progress at all.
This is something that isn't really an issue going from a PS3 to a PS4... because there's no backwards compatibility. That is quite sad, but what can you do. Emulating the CELL architecture is a whole different beast from Microsoft emulating their PowerPC based solution for the Xbox 360 on newer Xbox systems. It's sad, of course, and I'm not defending it at all, but it's at least understandable.
Without any sort of streaming capabilities here in Brazil, we're SOL when it comes to PS3 titles on PS4/PS5, but I find the game selection on Deluxe to be good enough.
My brother playing his favourite game, Fortnite
Being able to play free games for... free (multiplayer wise), is a nice touch.
Not that I need it, but it's good for people who only plan on playing these titles.
The classics selection on PS Plus is always expanding and it's great to see amazing games such as Tekken 6, Soul Calibur (PSP), God of War 3 and my favourite PSP title, Ridge Racer 2.
I just hope we get more and more classic titles. Jim Ryan doesn't seem to believe people want to play older titles, but we do. As an Xbox fan, it's a shame to see Sony's disregard to classic titles.
The PS3 was full of PS1 games and some PS2 stuff, the PS4 just doesn't have as many. It's quite sad.
Quick recommendation: Pure Pool.
This here is my girlfriend playing against my dad. This billiards game is totally addicting.
Talking about my girlfriend...
Here I am being ignored in favour of Rain World (free on PS Plus).
She's absolutely addicted to this simple little game with a really interesting physics engine and enemy AI.
I'm glad even she's got some use for my PS4.
Oh yeah, and I have two controllers because I bought one to use on my PC. It's a bit more cumbersome than using an Xbox controller but it works just fine for me.
Compare that to the PS3 controller on the PC... and it's a whole different story. The PS3 controller was a b*tch to get working on Windows or Linux.
Here's an old ass video of the Dualshock 3 just not working nice with the aforementioned i3 laptop running Kubuntu and it just outright crashing my Raspberry Pi running RetroPi.
The DS4 does not bring such issues to the table when running under #Linux.
Anyways, that's it basically. My experience with the PS4 has been superb and the games are great.
I hope to be able to buy some physical titles as well because I love collecting, but since I currently don't have a job, I'll stick to PS Plus Deluxe and its great selection of titles.
Oh and a hot tip: Don't sign up for EA Play on PS4 unless you really want some cheap Battlefield. EA Play is way more worth it on Xbox under Gamepass Ultimate/PC Gamepass.
Thanks for reading y'all!
The truth is that both are two good consoles, and both have pros and contras. But if for someone is important the money, PS3 may work well but is too obsolete for now. PS4 is the best option, obviously if can, PS5 is the best of the best XD.
PS5 is my dream xD
One day I'll get there, even if late
Goddamn that is expensive! The PS4 has a bunch of good titles for it and you're in for a really good time!
I know, right!?
Our tax situation back then was ridiculous.
The PS5 is also expensive here but it's way below $1000.
Even the new X-Box (X-Box One series) is much cheaper than that. And it has very good exclusive titles. For example Forza Horizon 5.
I used a PS2 and a PSP in the past, but nowadays I would rather go for an X-Box One, if I would still play video games that much. Nowadays I play games mostly on my Motorola Moto G22 (Android 12) smartphone.
I don't think we need a PS5 if we got PS4, many new games still support on PS4 even now
