If I Could Choose---A Heartfelt Reflection on the Traits I'd Love My Children to Inherit
Have you ever heard the phrase, I'm passing this legacy to my children? That is because everyone wants to be remembered for something positive after they might have passed away. And I hope we all do.
As humans, there is something deep inside of us that is always longing to pass the most amazing-best part of us to our offsprings and generations yet to come. We always wish for that child who will uphold our legacies and walk through life with courage, wisdom, confidence, strength , grace and kindness, and not just to be superior, great or perfection, but for that desire that their lives has meaning, purpose and impactful. Most often, I always have that thought of if I have the ability to choice any behavioural traits my my offsprings, what would my children inherit. Having that power to choose is beautiful, but it is a heavy task in a way that children should be allowed to choose the positive trait they want, not choosing for them.
But I always pray that my children should carry my refusal to give up, my resilience, my courage even when the odds are not in my favour, that is the traits I want them to carry. Life will always through different things at your, it does not go as planned, it is full of raging storms, but I have that showing up spirit in me to smile through difficult times and never back down even when it is stormy. If my offsprings can have this traits, I am sure that no mountain will be too high for them to climb and they will always thrive.
They always say that it is curiosity that kills cat...
Well, I will say that being clever with how curious you are cannot harm you, and I also want for them my curiosity, to know how to ask meaningful questions, seek the truth and the insatiable desire to understand the world. You see that curiosity spirit can never be compromised or tamed because you know what you want. My curiosity always inspire my personal growth, kindness, empathy and innovation. Accompanied with a open and liberal mindset and emotional intelligence to accommodate others, with these I know for sure that they will be unique not because they are perfect human but because they are considerate in their actions.
And as for the health conditions, of course I want them to be completely genetically healthy and strong, have my genotype and phenotype , be completely free from preventable health challenges. Far more greater than that, I want them to raise up every morning and be happy with who they are becoming with no regrets.
In all reality about honesty, it is not possible to raise perfect children but I do not want to raise a half human being, I want to bring up a whole human being that is self aware, dedicated to growth, empathy, compassion, failure and most of all, humanity. Someone who is aware of their flaws because in the society of today, being different and uncommon is not about greatness, it all about how impactful you are towards humanity.
And to crown it all, the greatest inheritance that truly matters in this present world is a deep, enduring love. That is a trait that truly matters-world-changing love.
