The other day I had the difficult task of assembling a team with old parts from other teams. You may not think it is so difficult because you simply have to look for the parts in other similar cases, but the truth is that you have to verify that each component is in good condition and since the other equipment was defective, the task was not as easy as one might think.

However, after hours of review, I managed to select several components that would serve to assemble a basic equipment, a simple one that would meet the basic requirements.

El otro día tuve la difícil tarea de armar un equipo con piezas viejas de otros equipos. Quizás no crean que es tan difícil porque simplemente hay que buscar las piezas en otros case iguales, pero lo cierto es que hay que verificar que cada componente esté en buen estado y dado que los otros equipos estaban defectuosos, la tarea no fue tan fácil como uno podría pensar.

Sin embargo, después de horas de revisión, logré seleccionar varios componentes que servirían para armar un equipo básico, uno sencillo que cumpliese con las exigencias básicas.

The first thing I found was a motherboard from an HP Compaq dc7500. I found it in an old case of these models. The motherboard, processor and other peripherals were still good, but some basic things were missing to be able to put this computer together.

Lo primero que encontré fue una placa base de un HP Compaq dc7500. Esta la encontré en un case viejo de estos modelos. La placa base, el procesador y otros periféricos aún servían, pero faltaban algunas cosas básicas para poder armar este equipo.

The first thing I did was to prepare the case, after selecting all the pieces that I would integrate in this huge drawer. There it was, after a deep cleaning.

I had to use chlorine bleach to remove some mold damage, then I let the case rest in an open and breezy environment. After a while it was completely clean to store the components.

Lo primero que hice fue preparar el case, después de seleccionar todas las piezas que integraría en este enorme cajón. Allí estaba, después de una profunda limpieza.

Tuve que usar cloro para quitar cierto moho dañito que tenía, luego dejé reposar el case en un ambiente abierto y con mucha brisa. Después de un rato quedó completamente limpio para almacenar los componentes.

It was not easy, but among the old computers I found a 2 GB DDR2 RAM card and a card that was already included in the old computer, where I found the motherboard. This card works with an input peripheral that serves as a memory card reader.

No fue fácil, pero entre las viejas computadoras encontré una tarjeta RAM DDR2 DE 2 GB y una tarjeta que ya estaba incluía en el equipo viejo, donde encontré la placa base. Esta tarjeta funciona con un periférico de entrada que sirve como lector de tarjetas de memoria.

The processor, on the other hand, had the thermal paste expired, something that I had to change immediately to avoid any damage to the equipment in the future. In this case, this equipment uses an Intel Core 2 processor, a good processor if we compare it with other old equipment.

El procesador, por otra parte, tenía la pasta térmica vencida, algo que tuve que cambiar de inmediato para evitar que en un futuro el equipo pudiera sufrir algún daño. En este caso, este equipo usa un procesador Intel Core 2, un buen procesador si lo comparamos con otros equipos viejos.

Among all the old equipment that was there, I managed to gather the pile of screws I needed to assemble this kit, of course I prepared myself with small screwdrivers both bladed and Phillips, as these were what I needed for this kind of screws.

Entre todos los equipos viejos que había, logré reunir el montón de tornillos que necesitaba para armar este equipo, por supuesto me preparé con pequeños destornilladores tanto de pala como de estrella, pues estos eran lo que necesitaba para esta clase de tornillos.

So, I started installing each of the parts I found. First I installed the front panel ports and the motherboard, securing it securely in place with the screws I showed above.

Así pues, comencé a instalar cada una de las piezas que encontré. Primero instalé los puertos del panel frontal y la tarjeta madre, fijándola bien en su lugar con los tornillos que mostré más arriba.

This case came with a small horn on the front panel, I must admit that the connector of this horn took me a while to locate it on the motherboard, as it was very small. I even had to resort to a magnifying glass to find its location, note that I use glasses because I do not see well, so a tool like a magnifying glass is always useful in this type of situation.

Este case traía consigo una pequeña corneta en el panel frontal, debo admitir que el conector de esta corneta tardé en ubicarlo en la tarjeta madre, pues era muy pequeño. Incluso tuve que recurrir a una lupa para dar con su ubicación, nótese que uso anteojos porque no veo bien, así que una herramienta como una lupa siempre es útil en este tipo de situaciones.

I also connected the other card I mentioned, which serves to connect more USB ports and is also connected to other components on the front panel that have micro sd memory readers and yes, more USB readers.

También conecté la otra tarjeta que les mencioné, que sirve para conectar más puertos USB y también va conectada a otros componentes en el panel frontal que tienen lectores de memoria micro sd y sí, más lectores USB.

Luckily I also found a good hard drive among so much old and damaged equipment. It was a sata hard drive, which I plugged into place along with the 2GB RAM I mentioned above.

Por suerte también encontré un buen disco duro entre tanto equipo viejo y dañado. Era un disco duro sata, el cual conecté en su lugar junto con la RAM de 2GB que les mencioné más arriba.

Finally, I connected the power supply, a 300 W, powerful enough for this equipment. Surprising that it was still working after so many years and that it was still throwing all the voltages correctly.

Para finalizar, conecté la fuente de poder, una de 300 W, lo suficientemente potente para estos equipos. Sorprendente que aún funcionara después de tantos años y que arrojase todos los voltajes de manera correcta.

This way I only had to put on the front and side covers, so the equipment was completely sealed and ready for the first tests. I felt like a mechanic putting an engine together from scratch and starting it for the first time.

De esta manera solo tuve que colocar la cubierta frontal y la lateral, así el equipo quedó completamente sellado y listo para hacer las primeras pruebas. Me sentí como un mecánico cuando arma un motor desde cero y lo enciende por primera vez.

It was great to see that the computer turned on properly, so I installed an operating system and called it a day.

Fue genial ver que el equipo encendía correctamente, así que instalé un sistema operativo y esta jornada de mantenimiento la di por finalizada.
