Mental Health Ambassador Role(s) on the FreeCompliments Community!

Yesterday, I made a rather disappointing discovery within our community. Although we’ve seen some fantastic growth and consistent posts, our comments have dropped off slightly. A slight drop-off can be expected sometimes, but here’s what I truly didn’t like:

One of our members created a post that was clearly a call for help due to mental health issues, possibly exacerbated by a difficult day. This post was created a few hours after I went to sleep for the night, and I was only able to see it 17 hours later. It had a few dozen votes on it, yet no replies. Not a single person had bothered to drop as much as a sentence to someone who was openly struggling. Nearly 48 hours later, I’m still the only human to comment on that post.

As a community, we can certainly do better than this.

I’m realistic. I don’t expect that every single person will be able to reply to all posts 24/7. Most people aren’t nuts like me to come here almost 7 days per week lol! However, there are certainly some people who come around on a given day, and it’s nearly certain that some proportion of those votes on the post were coming from real people who saw the post. Now, votes are important on Hive, but remember that we’re all about communication. This is the crux of what makes us human.

If you see a post that’s asking for human communication, and see that nobody has replied to it for a long time, please take a moment to write at least a brief sentence – to acknowledge the existence of the person. A simple acknowledgment can mean the world to someone who may otherwise think that they are shouting into the void.

Mental Health Ambassador Role(s)

In light of seeing what happened here, I’d like to push some more focus on mental health in our community. We certainly have enough members to be able to communicate with each other, especially in times of struggle. This is exactly where we have the opportunity to shine.

Thus, I’m opening up a role for all of our members, as well as to those who have not yet joined. A mental health ambassador’s job would be to look specifically for posts from people that are asking for some type of help, implying a need or request for help, or appear to be a call for help or communication. The mental health ambassador would then open a line of communication as soon as possible to ensure that the person is in a stable mental state.

Feel free to tag me on such posts, but the essential aspect would be for someone to talk to the person who needs help.

In order to avoid a 7 day per week situation, I’ll keep this position very flexible: a mental health ambassador can choose any number of days per week that they can keep open to do this job. If they want to do this only on Mondays, that’s great. If they want to do Saturdays and Sundays, that’s also great. If they want to do this 7 days per week… God bless, that would make life easier for me lol!

Should multiple people want this job, we can communicate within the FreeCompliments Discord to split up days according to your preferences.

Does this job pay?

Of course it will! This is not necessarily an easy job and does require some degree of vigilance and care. For every day that this job is done, I’ll pay 1 HSBI Unit, regardless of whether any posts are made that require attention. This means that if you decide to do this job 5 days per week (like a standard job), you’d get paid 10 HSBI Units every 2 weeks.

I’ll just ask that you send me reminders to do so because I am a touch forgetful, especially during my busiest workweeks! As long as I am reminded, I’ll definitely be sending you the HSBI.

Is there training involved?

You can certainly ask me questions about the proper approach to situations if you’d like. Since every situation is different, there is no single proper answer. However, a key point to remember is to not be dismissive about the person’s concerns (i.e. don’t say, “don’t worry, this too shall pass” or something similarly generic that sounds like a feeble attempt to be positive without addressing the actual issue at hand).

Here are some useful guidelines which can help you.

However, you typically do not have to go to great lengths at the very beginning. Simply reaching out with a greeting and acknowledging someone’s difficulties can be a highly productive start in the process of helping them. This first step is sometimes the most significant one, and as such is the primary job of the mental health ambassador.

What do you think of the idea of mental health ambassadors? Are there any other ways that we can encourage comments on posts from those who are struggling? Am I being too harsh in my assessment and expectations?

I would love to hear any and all opinions about these topics from everyone who is currently a member of FreeCompliments, since you’re all inaugural members! Ohhh I think it's very nice what you are doing, I hope that many can support you, but the truth is that sometimes I don't have time to do so much, I am very communicative in hive, but the truth is that sometimes so much overwhelms me. Blessings to all that you do.

Absolutely understandable, and you just joined the community so I don't expect that you would have seen that post, haha!

Even just a random comment in passing can make all the difference in the world, just like this one. 😊

Indeed, that's rather beautifully phrased! I face time-sensitive situations rather often where moments can make a major impact on someone's well-being. It hits rather close to home.

Definitely count on me to be a mental ambassador because I would love to contribute even a tiny grain of sand to help those who need it and I hope that many more people are encouraged, we will form something big:)

Wonderful! I also have one other person who's interested in doing this as well, and possibly more in the future. Please hop onto our Discord (if you'd like) and we can collectively arrange how to split the days.

Having ambassadors is a great way to expand positive influence for the project for sure. I actully am one for a few projects here on hive but the biggest notable one would be Leo. It's a way to build team work, idea sharing and action on a larger scale. Go get it!

Thanks so much! It's great to know that this idea was one that's similar in implementation to a project that's already in much larger scope. 😊

Hello, I really felt sorry for myself and others when I read this statement. I am still not sure exactly which publication you are referring to (but I am going to look for it right away) and I would still like to know more about the matter, I don't intend to expand much personally but I want to emphasize that I was an addict and a person who was in a street situation for several months and this does not make me stronger or more special or important than anyone else but still I know that my words, facts or ideas would be of great help to anyone, I have gone through really difficult times ALONE therefore if it is in my hands to give someone help I will do it without any problem and with great pleasure.

On the other hand in answer to your questions;

What do you think about the idea of mental health ambassadors?

• Easy, we can all do our bit here and that's what this community is for, to provide moral support to anyone in any situation.

Are there other ways we can encourage comments on posts from those who are struggling?

• Bro, I could not tell you exactly what to do about it because let's be honest, some people make posts and (I speak for myself) I find them dramatic and sometimes out of context which simply makes me not read the whole thing and lose interest, however knowing this I think we can take a little more awareness in this regard and devote the necessary minutes to each publication.

Am I being too harsh in my evaluation and expectations?

Have you ever seen someone soft succeed?
Have you seen someone with low expectations reach the chasm?
ME EITHER! So let's get to work.

I want to emphasize that I was an addict and a person who was in a street situation for several months and this does not make me stronger or more special or important than anyone else but still I know that my words, facts or ideas would be of great help to anyone

I think that your experience can certainly come in handy for others who are going through a similar situation! You're able to provide a perspective that others, such as myself, cannot. Your experience has absolute value. 😊

some people make posts and (I speak for myself) I find them dramatic and sometimes out of context

That's actually an outstanding point. Some of the posts that appear here are more on the fun / gamey side of things, which I think is ok. However, that can run the risk of obscuring posts which might actually require attention. I wonder if there's a way that we can somehow filter or seek out such posts a little bit better.

And yes, sometimes people are dramatic, haha. Nevertheless, it's hard for us to personally know what someone's going through.. we each have different thresholds of sensitivity. I think that teaching methods of becoming mentally resilient is something we can try to utilize more often, because babying around is often counterproductive.

Have you ever seen someone soft succeed? Have you seen someone with low expectations reach the chasm? ME EITHER! So let's get to work.

You almost made me want to edit out that portion of my post! Excellent call to action, very nice, haha. 😂
Thanks for this very helpful feedback. Let me send you some HSBI.

I would like to find a way to see posts in "filter" mode, because honestly it's not every day we want to be helpful or empathetic to others maybe because we had a bad day and just want to laugh instead of listening to someone else's problems.

**

Yes, I know this topic is a bit delicate and my words are not the best, but it could really be of great help the correct use of titles as well as the main photo in the publications so we know what we want to read exactly today, either a topic that lifts our spirits or a soft reading and maybe a funny anecdote (they are just ideas that can help us readers to choose), on the other hand I am willing to provide help to those who need it even if I am not available 24/7 and knowing this I know that I will make my effort to be more attentive .

** #

Cheers bro and thank you so much.

Implementing a system where people would use the best possible titles and images may be difficult (although we could come up with a system to advise this for best outcomes). Certainly willing to hear further thoughts about this!

By the way, the themed days do help with this to a certain degree, but its primary limitation (ironically) is the fact that I allow the freedom of all topics on all days o the week, haha.

And yes, it's a great point that we're just not up for replying to certain things every day. Someone below suggested a tagging system. I think I might be able to work with that in some capacity. Will think about this.

People go through a lot each day and having a mental health ambassador would go a long way.
Although I'm in the medical field, I do not know so much about a person's mental health yet but it would be interesting to learn.

This is a really nice idea and I hope it is achieved soon enough ✨

I'm also directly in the medical field, and the mental component is something that is, frankly, too-often overlooked! The more I do this, the more I try to pay attention to this component in my own practice.

We already have some interested parties, so we're off to a strong start. 😁

I think mental health should be looked into with scrutiny but that's just a thought till I can do something about it.

Aww, I guess I'd be learning from them then.😌

Yes, it's certainly a tricky business! I think that if we stay within our realm of knowledge and don't push our actions beyond what we know works, we can still handle in a safe way. It's important to be careful.

Hardly here eight days a week. The Pepe the frog in me(me) agrees. Moar than happy to lend a helping meme, or bits of words. Feel this fits along with the Pepe philosophy and believe Pepe has helped many with memes and moar. On board to be an ambassador for this having been through a little that has led me to growing up and down into this little cartoon frog meme character that appears sometimes bigger than life than some may realize. Anyone may let me know if I may possibly help most anytime. Nat Sam

Funny you mentioned this: we have actually been chatting about mental health initiatives!

The other funny thing is that a common request for help usually comes in a monetary form. I'm not asking Ray for a single penny, so we're trying to figure out how to actually use Hive itself (and/or Discord) to broaden our efforts. This involves actual brain juice. 😂

It’s true but that it’s very frustrating not to get any comments in a single, it should be more frustrating any help. And much more if you are asking for an emotional (mental) help. In normal situations it’s difficult to maintain motivation to be active here. It should be more difficult if you don’t get any comments in your post asking for any help. I want to thanks to you as i can say i see you and read you in more of my post.
Independently of the commitment you are asking for i am here to support any help, then you can tag me. I will think if I could do some commitment, English is not my mother language.

Exactly, the fragile moments are the exact opportunity for people to step up to the plate - and be humans at the core. I hope to encourage that here. Hive is amazing for the financial aspect, sure, and it underlies most of our actions here; however, I think it can go far beyond this and touch humanity.

I appreciate this; you'll be tagged for such situations! Please do join as a member here - it'll make the tagging far easier. 😊

People are truly going through a lot, I admire people who have the boldness to share their struggles, I have read some posts where I literally cried my eyes out for the author, people don't need a lot, just a little "I get you" or "hang in there" could go a long way. I would love to join this movement.

First of all, I am very sorry that this has happened precisely in this community. Right now I will look for that publication to contribute my part even if it is a little late.

The idea of the mental health ambassador role can be a good idea and I think I can be useful in that. I go to the Discord to offer myself. In fact, I already do something similar when I see that someone needs a word of support, only so far I am not actively looking.

Let's see what we can do! 🤗

That’s a great call for action here and to be honest I am very happy to see that so many people reached out for this position.

While I would love to help, I often struggle myself and my presence on Hive can be temperamental at best.

The other thing to bear in mind is that those who actively interact with other people on hive are more likely to receive comments on their posts. While mental health is extremely overlooked and require more attention, the desire to get better and help yourself must be there in order to get better. I say that from my own experience.

All the best with this noble initiative. I’ll do what I can to keep my eyes out for posts like this 💙
