A Follow-Up on Post Curation for Copied & Sourced Content in the FreeCompliments Community

Several days ago, we addressed our community on an important topic: how to address posts which copy and paste (with attribution) content from other sources. We permitted the entirety of the 7 day voting period to go through, and are results are rather clear cut.

We had three questions which we posed, as follows:

  1. The first question: should we allow the aforementioned content (copied content with sources) to be posted in the FreeCompliments Community?

  2. The second question: if we allow this content within the community, should we curate it (with minimal votes from our curation account and curation trail)?

  3. The third question: if we curate the content, should we allow Hivewatchers to cancel out our votes?

Our Community’s Answers

The first answer was not unanimous, but the majority chose to allow this type of content to be posted (we differentiate this from curating the content). I am actually very happy about this because I believe that not permitting this content to be posted at all would be a very direct form of censorship.

The second answer was also not unanimous, but had a larger percentage of agreement. The majority chose to not have us curate such content. Especially since we have a working curation trail, I think it’s pertinent that we respect the choice of the people on this trail. I also believe this solves some potential legal issues, including questionable legality of monetizing content that was sourced but without clear-cut, written permission from the original author. We were not out to trailblaze the law here lol!

The third answer was unanimous. The community does not want Hivewatchers (@hivewatcher and/or @hivewatchers) to cancel out their votes. I personally agree with this decision. I do, however, believe that they can still play the vital role of identifying bad actors and pointing them out to us so that we can address the issue as a community. This is important work and we definitely want people to bring out their best selves here, rather than their worst.

I was made aware that there is a blacklist that’s typically provided to communities, but we did not yet receive this from Hivewatchers. Having this available would be quite useful to us so that we can watch out for dishonest activity ourselves.

Updated Curation Policy

Based on our community’s choices, we will no longer be curating posts which only copy and paste content (even if sourced) without adding some original content, and will also not award HSBI. We will still allow the content to be posted.

Given the fact that our curation often comes a few hours after the posts are made, I believe this permits the concept of “freedom of speech” without altering “freedom of reach.” Votes can often be used as a way to boost the content’s placement on different platforms, but since ours normally come within 1-23 hours, the reach is not affected whether or not we curate it.

Alternative Options

I do still believe that resharing content can be useful on a broader social media level. There is some level of inherent value which should prompt this activity to some degree, as long as it’s not spammed.

Possible solutions include curation with 2nd layer tokens (LEO, NEOX, CTP, etc.) for posts. Rewarding Ecency promotions (1 or 2 days) to this content is another option. Alternatively, suggesting that the content be reshared via microblogging (through Threads or Decks) may be a more acceptable route.

Keep in mind that each of these options still present an opportunity for earnings to be made on the content, and may enhance the reach of shared information. Of note, 2nd layer token awards can be converted to Hive.

With this information in mind, I’d like to here out the community’s thoughts on these alternative methods of working with such content. If none of these gel with the community, and we collectively choose to ignore all rewards, then we can instead do what we do best: simply leave a compliment to the author. :)

Conclusion

We have updated our curation policy regarding how we’re going to deal with posts that copy and paste content with attribution to the author. We’ll permit the content to be posted, but not curate it, and would prefer to not have outside actors reverse any curation we do provide. We’re also offering alternative options for how to work with such content, and would appreciate your thoughts on this as well!

Disclaimer: FreeCompliments will be a beneficiary for this post, and I will attempt to boost it via Ecency points as well.

I think the unanimous votes to not reward copy paste content from other platforms is a good decision. The majority of Hive Communities don't accept reposting of content at all. So, the second consideration to reward such post with layer 2 tokens is fair, however, Hive watchers concern must not be taken lightly.

I agree with everything...

100% vote and excellent job. We absolutely should reward posts that are more original and have work in them along with if needed any citations.

Our community does need anti-abuse however that really should be done with ourselves and our own curation trail and down the power. Only when needed should have watchers step in if ASKED to.

The new rules implemented by any community do not override Hive ecosystem guidelines.
If some community decides to perpetuate spam of effortless copypasta and farming on it (as the above community had already engaged in doing), it will likely have consequences.

Ah, it seems like someone didn't read the post. 😉

Let me point out the relevant portions:

and:

If you look carefully, you'll see that we changed our curation to exclude posts that purely copy and paste content. We've demonstrated that we're willing to make changes, and that we actually show some respect for your effort. On the other hand, it appears that you're unwilling to reciprocate.

The new rules implemented by any community do not override Hive ecosystem guidelines.

I'd like to point out the word "guidelines" and contrast it to the word "rules." Upon entering Hive, people are not exposed to guidelines unless they happen to come across posts that delineate them; and even then, there are disagreements. For instance, you exceed your purview by following your own self-created "guideline" about the value of content provided to Hive. If you personally think that a post is not providing value, you "blacklist" it by classifying it as "spam" etc. In that sense, you're bending the "guidelines" to your personal opinions. Whether this represents a majority of cases, I can't say, but it does represent some portion.

Now I'll reiterate that before you start attacking our users, allow our community to have a discussion, as we did this time. We both want what's best for the community/blockchain, even if we disagree on what that means. Let's work together instead of against each other.

Please report abuse of downvotes and reward destruction by criminal acting stakeholders on the Hive Blockchain to the SEC.

SEC Contact:

Alternatively, the affected user can directly report the relevant accounts by name to the SEC in the United States of America.

Please use the following Contact Link to the SEC

United States Marshal Service Contact - USMS:

We also recommend reporting to the United States Marshal Service if you have been repeatedly harmed by misuse of stake power by account holders with significant market power. Accounts that use their stakepower to repeatedly and specifically harm users of the blockchain can also report the accounts in question anonymously to the United States Marshal Service.

Further information can be found at the following Contact Link of USMS Wanted

Please report to us via the above mentioned contact data, all cases of:

  • Fraudulent or unregistered offer or sale of securities, including things like
  • Ponzi schemes
  • Pyramid schemes
  • High-Yield Investment Programs
  • Theft or misappropriation of funds or securities
  • Manipulation of a security's price or volume
  • Insider trading

Residents of Canada are able to report the abuse of downvotes or criminal actions on the blockchain against your account in the following manner:

To report cryptocurrency-related crime in Canada, you can follow these steps:

  • Contact Local Law Enforcement: Start by reporting the incident to your local law enforcement agency. Visit your nearest police station or contact the non-emergency phone number to file a report. Provide them with all the details of the cryptocurrency-related crime, including transaction information, wallet addresses, communication records, and any other relevant evidence.

  • Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC): Report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, which is a national organization that collects and analyzes fraud-related information. They can provide assistance and forward your report to the appropriate law enforcement agencies. You can reach the CAFC through their website (www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca) or by calling their toll-free number: 1-888-495-8501.
Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC): If you suspect money laundering or other financial crimes related to cryptocurrency, you can report the incident to FINTRAC. FINTRAC is Canada's financial intelligence unit responsible for detecting, preventing, and deterring money laundering and terrorist financing activities. Visit their website (www.fintrac-canafe.gc.ca) for information on how to submit a suspicious transaction report.

  • Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA): If the cryptocurrency-related crime involves securities fraud or an unregistered investment, you can report it to the CSA. The CSA is an umbrella organization that coordinates and harmonizes securities regulation across Canada. Visit their website (www.securities-administrators.ca) to find the contact information for your provincial or territorial securities regulator.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP): In some cases, you may need to report cryptocurrency-related crime to the RCMP, especially if it involves significant financial losses, cross-provincial or international elements, or if directed to do so by your local law enforcement agency. Visit the RCMP website (www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca) to find the contact information for the nearest RCMP detachment or division.

  • When reporting the cryptocurrency-related crime, provide as much detailed and accurate information as possible. Include transaction details, wallet addresses, timestamps, communication records, and any other relevant evidence. Keep copies of all documents and communications related to the incident for future reference.

  • It's important to note that reporting cryptocurrency-related crime is crucial for raising awareness and assisting law enforcement in their investigations. However, due to the nature of cryptocurrencies, recovery of stolen funds can be challenging, and success may vary depending on the circumstances.

It's nice to have a good and unanimous solution regarding all three questions. Curation of the content self-created is better than any other way.

A small community but growing very well some awesome content creators.

Spread positivity and motivation.

Well, it wasn't unanimous, but I think representative of the interested majority. Seems fair - voting is unrestricted and those who chose to participate did!
