Understanding what Task view does

The task view is an essential Windows 10 utility that lets you organize open windows and programs. First of all, the task view lists all the open windows on your PC. Then with some really useful tools from the task view, you will be able to put your house in order.

With the task view, you are able to move windows around and position them where you want them to be. For example, there is a feature that allows you to move a window in-between virtual desktops. Another feature makes it possible to snap windows to your left or right. You can still remove programs from any virtual desktops, or you can add them to one or more virtual desktops. The possibilities to be more productive lies with the users ability to put Task view to great use. We will now see how to manipulate various windows using task view functionalities.

Task View settings you need to know

Below are some settings and features of Windos 10 Task View that could prove useful:

  • Opening and viewing active programs in the task view: First of all, you need to open the task view and see the programs you have opened. To do this, click the Task View button to the right of cortena Search box as seen below:

Clicking the button opens the task view as can be seen below:

As you can see above, these are open windows or programs that are currently running on my PC. Now lets look at 4 settings that could be made by right-clicking on top of one of the windows as shown below:

We will look at what each of the first 4 commands in this context menu does and how it helps to organize your workspace.

  • Snap Left: When you right-click on any window and select the first option which is Snap left, the selected window receives focus and opens to the left of the screen.

  • Snap Right: This setting opens the selected window or program to the right side of the screen, making it the active window.

  • Move to: The move to command is used together with virtual desktops. While trying to organize your programs, you can choose to group them according to purpose using virtual desktops. This contest menu can be used to move a program or window to an existing or new virtual desktop as you can see below:

Now I will use this feature to clean up my work space by sending all the open windows in Desktop 2 except the current window where I am making this post. See the result below:

  • Show this window on all desktops: This setting or command is used to duplicate the selected window across the virtual desktops. It simply means that when you open any of the desktops, this particular window or program will be among the ones listed in it. A frequently used window such as a directory where files are retrieved from, could benefit from this setting.

Conclusion

As you have seen above, Task view is really a cool tool to make your workspace clean and boost your own productivity. If there are several open programs and they are not organized, it takes time to find what one is looking for. But with the Task View, every window should be given a place.
