Broken Modem Escapade and The Hours It Took, Wormwood, Rhubarb Juice, Weather, Cuc Ties, Raking - Wednesday

The joys of technology. Yesterday morning was going along just fine and normally, the boys were at school, the birds were all out, I was getting the Real Madrid match on then I was going to go out to the garden for a while. That was when the internet connection died. We have been having some issues with the connection but this time it seemed to be totally toast. After numerous attempts at getting the LAN connection back working I then went on my phone and spent well over an hour on the online chat with Centurylink going through the various steps of troubleshooting which I had already done numerous times. I got shuttled off to different rep after different rep until I was finally told to call. The whole point of the chat was to NOT call. I was rather pissed at the complete waste of time when they could have said from the beginning to call as they are inept and can't do their jobs.

So then after a good bit of fuming I called and was immediately on hold waiting for a rep. It was well over half an hour later of listening to their garbage on hold when I finally got the person who ended up determined to help me get a new modem. She was a bit amazed at the trouble I was having getting a resolution but as the call went on it became apparent that it really wasn't the other reps faults, it is our account. The rep tried in vain to get a new modem applied to our account but it seems that our account is a black hole in their system and wouldn't allow her to make any changes. She finally got the back-end team involved that is the programming and tech side who eventually managed to get a modem assigned to our account and then shipped. It was nearing 2 hours on the call but in the end I was super happy to have gotten a rep who was so determined to fix the situation.

My whole morning was gone thanks to the hours it took with Centurylink, and I ended up tethering my phone to my computer to get internet. I was on my out to pickup the boys and I told my Mom about the dead internet and she said she still had wifi... So when I got home I checked and sure enough the modem was giving us wifi but no ethernet. At least we have the new modem on the way and it will be here Friday.

My day felt totally shot at this point and it was really hard to focus on a task for long. I did finally go dump a bunch of wormwood into the chicken feed and I also sprinkled some in the dog's food, which I was happy to see he ate all of. He is always finding something to nibble around the farm so I want to make sure he gets more wormwood with the regular doses of garlic I give him. Natural worming is far superior in my opinion.

While I had been on hold earlier I had figured out the height to hang the bag of rhubarb so it could drain out the juice with gravity. I am not squeezing it yet, I want to pull the bowl today and save the nice clear liquid then I will squeeze the rest which will have some trub left in it after the squeezing. The clear liquid is going to go to make jelly with grape juice I have saved from our grapes.

In the morning the club was talking about possibly going to fly Tekoa to the south of Spokane in the afternoon but as the day wore on the storms began to pop off and I went to look at the doppler to see a spinning rotation right over Spokane which was building up a ton of little storms. I watched the super dark clouds all around the farm, listened to the thunder, and waited for it to come and pound the farm.

It was silly watching the doppler as the storms all streamed north over Spokane but then as they approached the farm they dissipated and petered out. There was some serious downpours all around us but we managed but a few sprinkles out of all the activity floating around.

The clouds did help the greenhouse stay a bit cooler so I was able to spend a bit of time working on my cucumber lines. I have a wire fixed at the ground level which I am tying the line to then over the middle purlin and tied to the top center purlin. Each spot gets a line and if I can get them to grow up the lines I should have a tunnel of cucumbers hanging down to harvest.

I had dinner figured out so I took the time to go rake into piles the grass that I cut. I was hacking and coughing afterwards thanks to the raft of pollens and dust that was kicked up and into my face as I raked. I will haul it all up to the sheep today.

I figured out how to get streaming back onto the tv by hooking up an old laptop that has wifi. Our desktop that we normally use is only hardwire, but with the old laptop I got it back up and rolling so I was able to watch the NHL game where Florida advanced to the finals. We then made it out to soak before the sun went down.

It feels like the world will stop when the internet fails.

It is a bit sad how dependent we all are on it. When it is not my choice to be without it my brain freaks out, yet I can go to the forest with no service and be just fine.

Hopefully you'll get some proper rain soon...

I've never heard of using wormwood, what dosage do you use???

Garlic I've heard of for serious bacterial infections, but it should only be used for fifteen days. And the doses have to be pretty large. Sadly anything over fifteen days tends to harm a dog's immune system :(

I haven't any dosage amounts, for now I am just sprinkling some on the dog's food, enough that he will still eat his food without the wormwood overpowering the taste. I am giving it to him every few days like I do with the garlic. For the birds I poured it in as they are rather indiscriminate eaters at the feeder and there are a lot of them to have to try and get to eat the wormwood.

He has been okay I am just trying to keep ahead of the garbage that he keeps finding to eat around the farm. It's a never ending process it seems.

I looked up wormwood, and it looks like a schedule would be a good idea, rather than regular feeding. Similar to what you'd do with regular wormer. Also you'll want to know how much thujone your strain contains.

Garlic is a great fifteen day antibiotic, I've used it successfully for a dog before when the vet's prescription did nothing. But as I said, it takes the right dosage to kill the infection.

That being said, I also know of someone who used it in small or medium amounts as a preventative supplement with disastrous results. It's of the onion family, and dogs can't handle long term exposure.
