Practical Aspect In Education: A country man's opinion.

Education is often regarded as the key to success in my country, a belief that persists to this day. I concur to an extent, yet I also recognize that our educational system has stagnated, with only the curriculum and textbooks undergoing occasional revisions. Many essential life skills required for survival in today's world are not covered in schools, not even the fundamentals. While there are institutions offering advanced educational technologies, they remain inaccessible to 80% of the general population due to high costs. One thing I am happy about the educational system is that the basic skills you did not learn in primary and secondary school (you might know this as junior high and high school) are taught in most universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. It is compulsory in my school for every student to learn one entrepreneurial skill. The skills are almost limitless; there are so many skills to choose from based on what you believe you can do without having any issues.

While I was in school, I went for computer training because I wanted to improve my graphic skills, and opening a computer learning institute has always been my dream, so I needed all the knowledge I could get. This was only this time, and I believe that my school has taught me a skill I am currently using.

While I was in one of the entrepreneurial classes, the lecturer teaching us said, "Don't think you will get an amazing job when you finish your education at this institution. There are so many graduates out there who are also looking for jobs, and it takes people with the highest number of skills to get it."
I believe what he was telling us was to learn a skill you can use to complement the course of study you are currently studying. There are so many people who have graduated but haven't gotten a job. It is the skills most of them learned in that class that they put into a job, which is what they are using to sustain themselves now.

There isn't a bed of roses out there; you need the skills you have gotten to build your bed, add your rose, and make it a place that would be comfortable for you to sleep in, which is why I believe that kids these days should learn something better in school. There are kids who want to be doctors, lawyers, engineers, and so on, which we still definitely need in the world, but what about kids with different dreams? Dreams can shape the structure of the world.

Now, we have many of these kids in my country, and we do not have the educational structure to support their dreams, which is why I believe the educational structure should change so kids can learn better things in school. Most educational facilities only teach kids how to become lawyers, doctors, engineers, and probably a few more known professions. If you ask kids in Nigeria what they want to become when they grow up, 90% of them will make mention of this profession. I believe kids can learn better, and we can do better to make the educational system a more productive one. Thanks for having me.
