Breaking Barriers: Women's Impact in STEM Fields
Firstly I would love to start with the full meaning of STEM because it is an acronym that needs to be understood before talking about the meaning. S stands for Science
T stands for Technology
E stands for Engineering and
M stands for Mathematics
Now we can agree that what a man and a woman can do better, this quote is no longer a joke because women are making an impact and playing a crucial role in all these fields, contributing to innovation, research, and education in every part of the world. Historically, women have been underrated in STEM careers, but their participation is increasingly important due to their unique perspectives, creativity, and expertise.
In the olden generation, our forefathers believed that training a girl child was just a waste of time because they ended up in the kitchen and their qualifications work under their beds, that is why we have many of our mothers denied the privilege of going to school because school was seen as a waste of time and rather train the male children.
Women are conducting research in this generation, they are now engineers and also lecturers who are vibrant in their careers, we can testify that we now have women ruling in every career aspect, when I was in school we had different lecturers who were women and very dedicated with their works and also improve in their qualifications, they tend to move from one qualification to another just to acquire more knowledge about their career.
When talking about Research, Women in STEM contribute to the advancement of knowledge in their respective fields as I explained above. Though men outnumbered women in this category but the few we have are making an impact and finding more knowledge to know better, women in STEM now design experiments, analyze data, and develop new theories and concepts to further our understanding of the world.
In the education aspect, Women in STEM also play an important role in educating the next generation. Practically we can see women as teachers, professors, and mentors, they inspire and nurture students, particularly girls, to pursue careers in STEM. By promoting STEM education, they help close the gender gap and create a more diverse workforce. I have a woman that I look up to, she is my role model when it comes to educating ladies on how to fight for their future and believe in themselves, she has helped me a lot by bringing out the best in me, she was my mathematics lecturer when I was in school, she made me fall in love with mathematics because of her kind nature and how she made the course so simple and friendly, most women in STEM are a source of inspiration to the coming generation.
I have a friend who studied physics, they were just two females in that department and this brought about teamwork and collaboration among the course mates both male and female, the guys always protect their women because they see them as strong and vibrant people who can single-handedly fill the form to study physics as a course, we see physics as a course that is meant for men to study, this brings me to collaboration as another benefit that women in STEM always have unlike other departments that are full of women.
Especially in Nigerian universities, people see women in STEM as strong, elegant, vibrant, and unsociable, I said unsociable because there will not be much time to flex around if truly you are aiming high, people hold them in high esteem and respect them. I remember when I gained admission and people were talking down on us because we chose geology as a course to study, most of our lecturers advised us to change our course because they believed that geology is meant for men to study, though it wasn't easy because it was not like other regular courses that female do go for, we were just 12 females but only 5 of us graduated, it was like world war 111 before we finally signed out.
Women in STEM are like mentors for other women and girls interested in pursuing STEM careers, they share experience and guidance but never discourage others, I believe since one person can do it then all of us can do it.

I am so glad to see that the ill belief that women are less is gradually becoming a thing of old. I wonder how women with great passion and potentials felt during 1700's to 1990's.
Having the women in the STEM field and making a great impact is a thing of joy for me because one of my sisters really loves the tech field and I can see how much joy she express each time she is oiung anything related to tech. Women can do equally what men do in these field and even beyond these fields.
I agree with you on that
Women should be allowed in that field so to help encourage other up coming ones to want to push harder.
As they say them as role models and mentor, they already have that mind set already that can help push them in one way or the other that ,as long as she was able to do this, I can do it too. They should be allowed in this field more.
Times are changing and women are the ones ushering in that change.Indeed, it's such a great time to be alive.
