We Do More Than Just Eat, I Promise!

We stopped in a newly opened Asian Mall in Eden Prairie because we’d been hearing about how good some of the food vendors were. I was shocked to see that the restaurant we chose had a robot serving the food. The process was this, you snapped a QR code, ordered your food via the app and the robot did the rest.

As you can see from the video, it was fascinating to watch how flawlessly and efficiently the robot did its job. It brought the steaming dishes out to the twelve tables in the restaurant, which would have required at least two human servers to manage.

Unfortunately, the food left a lot to be desired but this glimpse of the near future made it worth the trip. Even though this was only a very primitive robot it was interesting to see how diners were connecting with it, especially children, on an emotional level. I have a feeling this is just the first of many of these experiences we’ll all have in the coming years.

Deutsche Tage

We’re also lucky to have the Germanic American Institute nestled between some of the old Victorian mansions in our neighborhood.

GD3.jpg

GD1.jpg

The institute has two festivals a year and it's just a few blocks from our building so it's super convenient. In the spring, it’s Deutsche Tage or German Days and in the fall they have a wonderful Oktoberfest celebration. Although the festivals are small by today's standards it’s always a good time, there’s live music, dancing, German products, and delicious food.

GD4.jpg

GD2.jpg

This year we thoroughly enjoyed a Hungarian bratwurst with sauerkraut and smoked paprika, spaetzle, a cake (which I can't remember the name of) with layers of sponge, whipped cream and fresh berries, and a humongous hefeweizen.

GD7.jpg

GD6.jpg

I promise we do more than just eat.

Ancestor.jpg

The entire experience satisfied my German genes, which 23andMe now tells me is roughly 39.3%. This explains why I enjoy these festivals so much every year.

All for now. Trust your instincts, invest in you, live boldly, and take chances.

Poetry should move us, it should change us, it should glitch our brains, shift our moods to another frequency. Poetry should evoke feelings of melancholy, whimsy, it should remind us what it feels like to be in love, or cause us to think about something in a completely different way. I view poetry, and all art really, as a temporary and fragile bridge between our world and a more pure and refined one. This is a world we could bring into creation if enough of us believed in it. This book is ephemera, destined to end up forgotten, lingering on some dusty shelf or tucked away in a dark attic. Yet the words, they will live on in memory. I hope these words become a part of you, bubble up into your memory when you least expect them to and make you feel a little more alive.

Most of us have experienced a moment of perfect peace at least once in our lives. In these moments we lose ourselves and feel connected to everything. I call these mindful moments. Words can’t describe how complete they make us feel.

These moments are usually fragile, evaporating in seconds. What if there was a way to train your mind to experience more of them? It’s deceptively easy and requires nothing more than a subtle shift in mindset. My new book, Mindful Moments, will teach you to be much more content despite the chaos and imperfect circumstances continuing to unfold around you. This is so revolutionary and nice to see at the same time. I bet the kid won't be able to get his eyes off the Robot all thru his time at the restaurant.

From the right turning to the greeting to the robot walking back to the kitchen area was so enticing that I had to watch it over and over again.

It was very impressive! I guess Japan has had these for years but this is the first time I've seen one in America.

Wow, it's a shame that the meal wasn't as exquisite as the robot server. It would have been just perfect. I'm glad your German genes were satisfied and that you had a splendid time.
You look really well by the way.

The food wasn't cheap either. I think the restaurant was banking on people dining with them just to see the robot. Thank you!

I am curious. Why does your ancestry report claim the German and English componenents of your DNA are 'New'? It would seem to me they'd be just as old as the rest of it.

Thanks!

23andMe says they're continuously updating your DNA profile based on new data coming in from more people taking the DNA test. I guess the larger the pool of clients, the more clear everyone's genetic profile becomes. They were horribly inaccurate, at first, for Africans and Native Americans because their pool of data in those groups was low because large numbers hadn't taken the test. It's fascinating how they pinpoint the regions even.

That is pretty cool! I remember the first time I saw a robot floor sweeper at Sam's Club. It was crazy. We were like what is that incessant beeping! It was so annoying. Then we realized it was the floor cleaning machine and we had a good laugh from it. I'm sorry the food wasn't great at the first place. The German stuff looks fantastic. I am thinking about hunting down a pretty famous Polish place in Michigan next weekend. We shouldn't be too far from it, so it might be interesting!

Funny! After seeing what a great job this robot did I can see more and more places deciding to try it. I couldn't help but wonder how long the batteries held a charge. I imagine they have swappable battery packs for it. The food was out of this world, I'm not a fan of traditional brats but this spicy Hungarian one was amazing. We love Polish food too! They have a festival in Minneapolis every year that's so much fun. It's a very similar vibe to these German festivals. If you go I hope you enjoy it!

Thanks, we will see how it goes. There is a Polish festival near where we live, but I don't think we have ever gone to it. The South East side of Bay City has a huge Polish population. You've probably noticed on Facebook that my wife has a pretty Polish maiden name too, but she's actually more Swedish than anything. I am hoping she can find something she likes at the place I am looking at.

I did notice your wife had a Polish maiden name! My mom grew up with lots of Polish people and always talks about how much fun they were. I'm looking forward to hearing about this new place your trying. I hope it's good! It's always a crapshoot.

It is, but this is supposed to be pretty renowned. We will see. Really it will depend on if the wife sees anything there she is interested in trying. It's that she is a picky eater, but she is definitely more selective than me.

That video was so creepy I don't even know what to say... There go another two jobs for humans and that's only the beginning.

Yeah, it's kind of crazy! The thing is, where we live, it's difficult for restaurant managers to find people to hire. A lot of people went back to school during the pandemic or started their own business so the service sector might have to resort to using these robots more and more.

Soon we will be replaced by robots and we will be left without work... I don't even know if this is good or bad :)

So many jobs will be eliminated in the next decade. I really hope the governments of the world are preparing for it now. I think it's both good and bad. Good, in a sense that people won't have to do boring, menial jobs anymore but bad in the sense that we won't be able to pivot as a society fast enough to find work for everyone who is displaced by robots.

I'm primarily Scottish, German, British and Irish.

I love the food in Germany, but, when I'm there, I find it next to impossible to find a vegetable at any restaurant (not counting potatoes).

The Irish in me is screaming ... "The potato is all that you need!"

The German in me is screaming ... "Why would you want a vegetable?"

The Scottish in me is screaming ... "If it is ne Haggis, it's crap!"

The English in me is screaming ... "Why does this food have so much flavour?"

That is hilarious! I wonder how much inner conflict we really have inside of us due to our DNA? I mean, I'm even 2% North African and Ashkenazi Jewish. I have all the bases covered. Maybe this is why there aren't many dishes I don' t like. Lol.

When you look at dog breeds, there are many things that are common in certain breeds. German Shepherds are typically very fast learners and food motivated. *oodles are typically high strung and reactive to their environment. Of course, there are statistical outlyers to everything. And with time and effort, you can train dogs into or out of the behaviours you want.

I'm sure the same goes with humans. At the DNA level, I personally believe our minds are strongly influenced by the hidden codes in our genes. We can actively ignore these signals... but as you mentioned above, if all your genes combined like all kinds of food, dig in!

Very true! DNA is our OS to a certain degree. We can override it but it takes conscious effort.

What fun! And to think that when we saw that kind of thing in a sci-fi movie, we thought it would be a long time before we could see it. Undeniably, the future is today. I don't know about you, but I am pleased to be seeing all these advances. I don't know when something like this will come to Venezuela, but I hope that before I die I can see it. hahaha. As for your ancestral composition, it already seemed to me that you had very evident European features. And that cake looks exquisite and so does the beer.
Ah, June is coming and you still don't sing birthdays. Or did it already happen and you didn't tell us?
Eine Umarmung, Sir

It was weird! I felt like I had been transported to Tokyo. The big day was last Sunday (on Father's Day). We had a fabulous dinner at a new restaurant called Herbst in St. Paul. I was thinking of taking pictures and then writing about it but I didn't want to detract from the experience and just wanted to be present in it and enjoy it. Everything so good, it was probably in the top 3 of the best dinners I've ever had. I hope your week is going well! Another weekend is almost upon us!

Huh. These German Institutes seem to be uber-active everywhere, don't they? That robot, I'll admit, scares the hell outta me. Nevertheless, sounds like you guys had a lovely time :)

This institute is really active. They have a German-immersion preschool and weekly coffee/cake get togethers on Saturdays. It was a very fun weekend. It's crazy how much of what we do for fun is centered around food. I don't know if it's like that in your country or not. I hope my metabolism never slows down. : )

I think food's become a major social thing mostly everywhere, yeah. Fairs like that draw you in with food, we go out to meet people for food or drinks or whatever. Makes you wanna see how long you can sustain a relationship without going for anything edible, eh?

I hope my metabolism never slows down. : )

Amen :)

Okay... here we go then. It's happening 👀

Yep, it's crazy. We didn't even know about it until we got there. Restaurants are having a very hard time finding employees here so we'll be seeing lots more of it!

The way we see the technology has advanced a lot and in the video we can see that this robot is giving food to people in a very good way. We will see this in many more places. And if all these jobs were to be reported, the people who used to do all these jobs would have a lot of trouble and it would be very difficult for them to make money. One must visit such events, one learns many new things and passes one's time in a very good way. The food and drink looks so tasty.

I was hoping to read about that special birthday outing, so you owe us!
But, that robotic waiter is something else, very efficient but what happened to the human waiters is my question. With AI starting to cause job losses, it actually makes me fear for the future of mankind! Or am I just showing my age 🤔
The German market looks great Eric!
Hubby and I both have German blood as well as a mix from other European countries. Hubby's grandfather actually was a German American, hailed from Texas. He apparently came to SA during the First World War and was married to a Danish lady. I find Genealogy fascinating, would love to do a DNA test! My nephew did one in the hope of finding a link to my Mom's biological father, but no luck there. He did find a relative on my Granny's side though, she had info from that bloodline, so that was great.
I hope to see the food from that fancy restaurant you went to for your birthday!

I was going to take photos of the dinner and do a post about it but as I sat there I decided I just wanted to be present in the moment and enjoy it. It was one of the best meals of my life, everything we tried was phenomenal. It was nice to see a restaurant going "above and beyond" and not just doing the bare minimum to satisfy people "just enough".

We have so much fun at those German Festivals! They're small but that's part of the charm of them. Wow, his grandfather came from America? That's a twist. I wonder how many Americans ended up staying in Africa after the war?

The role of humans has been replaced by robots, that's what happened at this time. Then what will happen in the future when all human roles are replaced by robots. I think there will be more unemployment in the future. Have a nice day Eric.

Many jobs will be taken by robots in this next decade. I hope people are educating themselves now so they can make the pivot when they need to or else a large swath of the population will be unemployed. Have a wonderful rest of the week Eliana!

Food served by Robots is not a new thing, I experienced it a few years ago in a Pizza restaurant, It was a great experience. But to order your food, you need to get to the counter and tell the counter boy what you want to eat and the food was served by Robot.

Robot like this is primitive indeed and is good for a fast food restaurant. In a restaurant of a higher class the waiter not only brings food, he also changes plates, pours drinks, takes away napkins and smiles of course :D

German Days! I remember when my daughter was a schoolgirl she went to a "German" school, they studied Deutch every day, and also their literature and culture. Once a year in spring, they also had a German Day. It was fun!

I totally agree. It will be a good, long time before robots are cost effective enough to replace a talented server. Robot servers will thrive in these middle-range restaurants that aren't quite fast food but not fine dining either.

Oh nice! This place sounds very similar to where your daughter went. They seem to be getting a great education. I rode by on my bike last night and they were having an old-fashioned puppet show for the kids. That was so nice to see. I hope you're having a good week my friend!

I really love the idea of robots serving the food but it is also a big threat to the employment. Waiters are gonna hate this innovation and technology.
