Restless Curiosity (Original Poetry)

avatar
(Edited)

Be still,
restless curiosity,
know that
nothing
will never
extinguish the
smoldering embers
of your discontent,
except for happiness,
which is only
a choice away.

You’re the one
that makes us
look without seeing,
listen without hearing,
live without being.

There’s much
to be said
about sitting
on a porch,
enjoying a sunset,
and completely
losing yourself in
its symphony of colors
with your feet up,
sipping on some
mellow bourbon
without a single word
or worry in
this world.

Some would say
it doesn’t get
any better.

With a dash
of reverence,
a fair amount
of civility,
and a smidgeon
of luck
maybe someday
we'll escape
your grasp
and finally
find our way.

Poetry should move us, it should change us, it should glitch our brains, shift our moods to another frequency. Poetry should evoke feelings of melancholy, whimsy, it should remind us what it feels like to be in love, or cause us to think about something in a completely different way. I view poetry, and all art really, as a temporary and fragile bridge between our world and a more pure and refined one. This is a world we could bring into creation if enough of us believed in it. This book is ephemera, destined to end up forgotten, lingering on some dusty shelf or tucked away in a dark attic. Yet the words, they will live on in memory. I hope these words become a part of you, bubble up into your memory when you least expect them to and make you feel a little more alive.

Most of us have experienced a moment of perfect peace at least once in our lives. In these moments we lose ourselves and feel connected to everything. I call these mindful moments. Words can’t describe how complete they make us feel.

These moments are usually fragile, evaporating in seconds. What if there was a way to train your mind to experience more of them? It’s deceptively easy and requires nothing more than a subtle shift in mindset. My new book, Mindful Moments, will teach you to be much more content despite the chaos and imperfect circumstances continuing to unfold around you. Upgrade your life experience today for only $15.99 on Amazon.com.

My world in a nutshell. Since retiring, this has been my goal. To leave all the stress and nonsense behind and your books have helped me on this journey. Our (hubby and I) favorite place to be is on our porch at sunrise with a hot cup of coffee and each other, sitting quietly with our own thoughts.

Thank you! I'm working on this too myself. It's been difficult for me, not being able to travel. The pandemic has forced us all to take a longer pause than we might have been prepared for. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Happiness is really a choice away.

We are the product of our decisions.

Wonderful poem

Thank you. So true! At some point we just have to say, "I'm content" and let the happiness flow.

Hello dear friend @ericvancewalton good day
Beautiful composition. It's true, being happy is a choice and not a person's state of mind
You have a beautiful gift, your writings are admirable
Enjoy the weekend

Hello my friend. I appreciate it! This one was like a "stream of consciousness" piece that I wrote very quickly. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I hope you enjoy your weekend too!

Our lives are our choices, if we live a quiet and happy life, it means that we make the best choice.Thank you for these beautiful words.

Poetry is beautiful, it is a way to express ourselves, to be able to unburden ourselves as well, many people do not know how to transmit certain feelings and they do it through these words. It is simply wonderful.

Poetry is my literary "drug" of choice. : ) No matter what other forms of writing I do I always come back to it. Thank you!

Everything is relative. When I was young, I loved tomorrow's sunsets. Now for me the sunset is real happiness. In the sunsets - the divine wisdom of the sky and the sun. Very beautiful verse

Thank you! I love the meaning in what you said here. It's so true, when we're young we're always living in anticipation. When we hit middle age we realize how valuable the present moment is, especially in the midst of a 2+ year long pandemic.

This is also what happens, when you are with someone you love. And this someone can be even an animal. I feel the same, when I sit in the nature (or even in the house) with my Harris's hawk on my arm. I have a feeling of incredible peace and love. Like as if there would be absolutely no problems and difficulties in life. As if everything would be fine. And in the end, this is actually true. We are not really physical beings.

Merry Christmas.

Greetings and much love from Hungary.

I very much agree @xplosive. I feel the same way when I spend these kinds of quiet moments with our beagle. Animals' minds are far less cluttered than most of ours, they have purer spirits than most humans as well. Thank you and a very Merry Christmas to you and your family!

What a beautiful poem...but until now I'm still thinking about the meaning of
look without seeing,
listen without hearing

Hope you have a wonderful day, Eric.

Thank you! What I meant by those lines you quote is our incessant "want for more" robs us of the joy and blessings in the present moment. Have a wonderful week Eliana!

I love this. This is something I'm trying to do more lately, be more present, because sometimes, I just feel my life gets away from me. Although I do think that sometimes, it's ego that makes us "listen without hearing". After all, most people only listen to reply, right? ;)

Thank you! Life moves so quickly these days, even faster as you get older. True, true! Truly listening is one of the most difficult things we can do but we can learn so much from it.
