Age of the Algorithm (An Original Poem)

(Edited)

There’s something
behind the eyes,
a brilliant flicker—
possessions
of previous lives
whispering, forgotten,
in the dusty
corners of our dreams.

Sleepwalking
into an abyss
we will never
walk back from,
as the greatest of joys
remain hidden
in the simplest of things.

An extraordinary witness
to the world,
I lose my anchor, set adrift
on the current of time.

Living a grand life
with such a
narrow expression,
we reach out,
desperately seeking
the ways in
which we connect,
reasons to belong.

All the while that
hum beneath life,
a vibration, deep and low,
feeding the
outrage machine,
as each of us
are woven meticulously
into the age of the algorithm.

~Eric Vance Walton~

Be well and make the most of this day.

Poetry should move us, it should change us, it should glitch our brains, shift our moods to another frequency. Poetry should evoke feelings of melancholy, whimsy, it should remind us what it feels like to be in love, or cause us to think about something in a completely different way. I view poetry, and all art really, as a temporary and fragile bridge between our world and a more pure and refined one. This is a world we could bring into creation if enough of us believed in it. This book is ephemera, destined to end up forgotten, lingering on some dusty shelf or tucked away in a dark attic. Yet the words, they will live on in memory. I hope these words become a part of you, bubble up into your memory when you least expect them to and make you feel a little more alive.

Pick up a copy of Ephemera today on Amazon.

Most of us have experienced a moment of perfect peace at least once in our lives. In these moments we lose ourselves and feel connected to everything. I call these mindful moments. Words can’t describe how complete they make us feel.

These moments are usually fragile, evaporating in seconds. What if there was a way to train your mind to experience more of them? It’s deceptively easy and requires nothing more than a subtle shift in mindset. My new book, Mindful Moments, will teach you to be much more content despite the chaos and imperfect circumstances continuing to unfold around you. Upgrade your life experience today for only $15.99 on Amazon.com.

And what if we only see what they want us to see, that according to the information they have given us, they know how we will act, what we want, and even make us believe that we think on our own? We boast of being a very intelligent generation, but we are predictable, like sheep we follow the course of the others. Even the black sheep are the same in this day and age. A universe connected by invisible threads, like Hansel and Gretel we leave crumbs of ourselves everywhere. A beautiful October night with a lot of heat around here. Hugs, Eric

This is true. I was just thinking the other day as I was watching the vice presidential debate that it doesn't really matter what they say or how much they lie because people already have their minds made up. This younger generation gives me hope though. They're waking up en masse to how the system really works. I'm glad the weather is decent there! We woke up to 39 degrees this morning. It's really cooling off now. Enjoy your weekend!

Thank you Nancy! Life is okay but just very busy right now! I'm looking forward to having more time to write in these next few weeks. How are you?

All is well here, thank God. I was asking you because it seemed strange that you had not written this week and I thought that something might be going on on that side of the universe. But I saw that you posted, you told me that you are well and I feel relieved for you. A big hug and take care of yourself

I'm glad to hear all is good with you, Nancy! We're in the process of moving. We found a house outside of the city that's a little larger and I'll finally have an office to write in. I expect I'll be writing a whole lot more once we get settled in the new place. I can't wait. Hugs to you and I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend. It's getting cold here, 32 degrees this morning!

We seem to be trapped in something we cannot control. Our lives are increasingly influenced by hidden and invisible networks. Our life is data that serves to manipulate our behavior. Greetings, @ericvancewalton

This is brilliant🙌🏻! There’s an amazing quote by Carl Sandburg “Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance.”

There seems to be a sense of inevitability woven in these lines. It reads like that to me (or maybe that's just my own thoughts on the matter weighing in). I think/hope humans will find a way to adapt and express themselves across the growing divide. Despite this grand life. As you do here. :) Beautiful.

Be well and make the most of this day.

I believe it will be inevitable, just like all of the previous Industrial Revolutions. I totally agree! We will learn, we'll adapt, and we'll ultimately retain our humanity through the cyclone of change. We'll probably come out on the other side much better for it. I just listened to the new JRE podcast (#2206) with Chamath Palihapitiya and he did a very good job of painting a picture of what the next few decades will look like and much of it is super exciting but also a tad scary. That good old double-edged sword, you know? Thank you my friend!

Very nice! Has your impending move been inspiring you to write more? I'm sure you have some great memories of your place that would fit well into a poem.

Thank you! The inspiration is there but the problem now is time. I'm lining up contractors and we're starting to pack up. I'm continuously writing down notes to revisit when we get settled and I can start seriously writing again. I'll be thrilled to finally have my own office.

I bet! I am excited for you as well. We have a workspace downstairs, but I wouldn't really call it an office. My wife calls it the junk room. It's kind of an office. I'd like to spend more time there, but things just never work out.

Thanks my friend! I think having my own space will really help with the writing. I'll be able to create a space conducive to writing instead of working at the kitchen table. The apartment we lived in before this condo had a pretty sizable walk in closet above where the Murphy Bed originally was (this was a 1920's building) and I used that to write in. I wrote quite a bit of the script for the streaming series in there. Lol.

Honestly peace is such a fragile commodity in our world today and whatever little we could find, we must enjoy it while it lasts.

This is uncharacteristically bleak for you! At least the way I read it...

But if you can see it,

Living a grand life
with such a
narrow expression,

you can find a way out of it. I'm trying! Actually, once it is seen, you are already out. That's the big step, seeing beyond your paradigm.

I didn't mean for it to be bleak. This piece is more about the kind of change that is inevitable as our species evolves. Despite our tendency to be afraid of and try to fight against change I think humanity has a great track record of retaining the things that make us human throughout these periods of intense change. I think we're experiencing lots of growing pains right now, this is why things seem so abysmal and chaotic. You are totally right, once you "see it" it can't be unseen. I hope you had a wonderful summer @owasco!
