HISTORY'S WORST NUCLEAR DISASTER

On April 26, 1986, just an hour after midday in Ukraine, the worst nuclear power plant accident in history took place, it released tons of radioactive material that still affect humanity to this day.

The Chernobyl power plant was an infrastructure that was built in the 1970's to provide electricity for Ukraine which was by then, still part of the formerly existing Soviet Union. The nuclear power plant had four nuclear reactors designed by the Soviet union; RBMK( Reaktor Bolshoy Moshchnosty Kanalny).

These reactors were renowned for High power outputs and their dual ability to produce both electricity and plutonium for nuclear weapons. They were however laced with an unstable design and were promised to power surges and lacked a containment structure for those power surges.

IIn1986, a safety test was carried out to determine the amount of time the turbines would keep spinning in the case of power loss to the main cooling pumps. The power output was reduced to a quarter and the operators turned off essential safety systems, control rods were removed to increase power output.

Unexpectedly, there was a build up of a xenon gas which absorbed the neutrons generated and mitigated the reaction rate, the power output was increased but this backfired and led to an uncontrolled power surge, an emergency shutdown was attempted but proved to be futile. The power surge eventually caused an explosion and spewed tons of radioactive materials in all directions.

Two lives were lost in the immediate explosion and many other workers lost their lives in following months and years from radiation, over 100,000 people were relocated from the nearest city and a 30 kilometer exclusion zone was established around it.

The Chernobyl disaster has caused so much pain and suffering for many people. Families have lost loved ones to cancer and other diseases because of the radiation. Parents are worried about their children's health and wonder if they will get sick too.

Many people had to leave their homes and move away because it wasn't safe to stay. People had to start over in new places, leaving behind their friends, family, and everything they knew. The people who helped clean up the disaster were very brave. They risked their lives to save others and prevent even more harm. They worked hard to make the area safer, and their efforts were crucial, sadly, most lost their lives in the process

A new building was recently put around the damaged reactor to make it safer. This is a big step forward, but there's still more work to do. People are still cleaning up the area, making sure it's safe, and closing down old reactors. They're also fixing the damaged land so that it can be used again.

We must remember the people who were hurt by the disaster and try to prevent something like this from happening again. Humanity needs to learn from what went wrong and make sure we're doing everything we can to keep ourselves safe.
