‎There are things about the human body that scientists still debate about despite how much effort and resources has been invested in research. The human body is ever evolving and just like every other specie on earth we also experience change. There are some changes that occur within humans that are not visible to the human eyes, as individuals, we barely notice this change because we are of the opinion that we are the same person we were yesterday.

‎One of the things common in human society is the use of medication, in order to combat illnesses and disease, we find ourselves subjected to all forms of medication to survive. These medications comes in different varieties and shapes, with each having its unique qualities. These medications are prescribed based on the kind of illness or disease a person is battling with and one thing most people don't know is that a lot of things are considered before a specific drug is prescribed to a person.

‎But then, the thing about people is that, the moment they fall sick and they are prescribed a drug to combat it, the next time they noticed that they are seeing symptoms of the an illness they ones treated in the past, the next thing is to walk into any pharmacy and purchase the drug they were prescribed before.

‎We don't understand the full details why a specific drug is being prescribed at a particular time, we just assume that since it works for us before, then it should work again. This is why some drugs don't seem to do what we expect but to some of us we might actually think our body has developed tolerance for the drug without being aware that it is as a result of wrong self-prescription or self- medication.

‎Does the body develop some kind of tolerance for drugs? I'm not really a science person but I will explain this base on my personal experience. Some years back, there is a medicine I take whenever I'm feeling body pain, it is called felvin, it is a popular pain killer drug. It is the kind of medicine that works like magic but as time goes on I realised the effect began to reduce, the rate at which this drug works before is no longer the same. It was not just me, I had some friends in my work place that complains about the same thing.

‎Some of them had to increase their dosage, thinking the fault is with the drug, probably the pharmaceutical company producing the drug has reduced it's quality, which kind of feels like a reasonable explanation for what we were experiencing but we never took time to see what was going on, we just didn't care. One of the reasons why I prefer this drug is because it is easy to use and it is not bitter at all, thanks to its sugar coated pill. Having to let go of this drug for another was a bit concerning so I decided to opt for a professional advice.

‎My elder brother studied biochemistry and works in a lab, among many other things. He is never a fan of self prescription, so somehow I found a way to ask him jokingly without referring to myself, he was the one that took time to explain. Based on his explanation, just like when a person eats the same meal for a month, slowly the person taste buds will start reacting differently and over time, the meal that used to taste delicious begins to become tasteless.

‎The medication we take also works in the same way, we gradually start developing tolerance to it because our body slowly because immune to the effect of the drug, at some point, the drug will have no effect at all. It is the reality of the human body and the change that occurs within us, that is why doctors tends to give different prescription to a person after they noticed a patient has taken a drug for a long period of time. I wouldn't consider it to be a dark side, it is just the natural nature of things, nothing works forever and as long as there are other treatments to opt for, there will always be hope for humanity.
