Why People Have Issues With Genetically Modified Organisms
We all have genetically modified things and has humans we are so use to selection, in fact it is a part of our live. First, a mother loves a child that always checks up on her, and comes out better than his peers, a farmer will always look for the best seed when he wants to plant, and he will ensure that the best of water, additive, and tools are used on the crop so as to get the best result. With this, we can always say that we as humans are a selective specie but asides being that, we have loved to genetically improve things from when we have learned to feed ourselves through agriculture.
Talking about genetic manipulation, we have always been able to produce food by combining one male gamete and a female parent together to give us the fruit result we desire. So then why are a lot of people against genetically modified organisms especially with agriculture?
While we have been combining the best of males and females in the past to give us better results we have not been able to be selective about our choices before genetic modification became a thing. With genetic modification, we are able to select precise genetic characteristics, and part we want to improve on when we are about to create a new offspring compared to when we did it without the knowledge and this is where there seems to be a problem with people. A lot of people come up with the saying that it isn't normal, so the question that comes to mind next is what is their definition of normal.
In the past, combining two or more seeds to give a better one was normal because it didn't require the tool and the toolbox of genetic modification but because we are able to pick the desired gene and let go of the genes that are not required means it isn't normal. With this type of judgement from people, it is visible that they do not mind combining things to get the result they want, they are just against the result that comes out of genetically modified organisms which would not have been if it were just combined without the tool to do it.
It is clear that if we get the results that align with our needs, then GMOs are not a problem such as the Golden Rice which is a Genetically Modified variety of rice that helps solve the problem of low vitamin A in people since it contains beta-carotene which the body converts to vitamin A but when genetic modification is done in animals so as to help with plant survival, it can become a big deal because it doesn't have a direct impact with us at the moment.
People also tend to have problems with genetically modified organisms with wide range of cross such as seeing a hen with genes of a lion (this is just an instance). When you hear people say they have concerns with GMOs, they are talking about concerns that first affect their own existence (Human health risk), then they become concerned about what could affect their health indirectly which is their environment (Environmental risk). So if I may ask what is your concern with genetic modified organism or genetically engineered organism. You might be willing to share your thoughts on GMOs and GEOs.
