Is Vaping Better than Cigarettes, and is it Safe for Your Health

I heard yesterday from an unreliable source that Vaping is better than smoking cigarettes and that it does no harm to the body. I used the word unreliable because it is without no doubt that this person doesn't know anything about vaping except for the fact that he is a user. So I will be looking at vaping and its effect on a person's health.

In clubs and bars, or at home, you might have seen people who take E-cigarettes. This has been branded to be better than cigarettes even when it is not. Before you continue, let me state clearly that the lungs were not created for smoke or anything that will cause them to work with stress. That alone is enough reason not to participate in vaping.

Contrary to popular belief, that vaping isn't bad, vaping isn't good for your internal organs such as the lung. In so many bars and clubs, vaping isn't allowed but people still vape. In case you do not know, vaping is associated with a short-term condition known as E-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injury (EVALI) which can be severe and life-threatening. It has similar symptoms to lung conditions such as pneumonia with patients coming up with symptoms such as cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, fever, diarrhea, headache, and vomiting but compared to pneumonia, its cause is different. Its cause is vaping and not pathogenic but how it causes it is not clear yet.

About 94% of Patients with EVALI who had a bronchioalveolar lavage performed on them came back with results showing the presence of TCH and Vitamin E Acetate but also found other substances such as Nicotine, Nickel, Tin, and Lead. This study didn't say that THC and Vitamin E acetate were responsible for EVALI rather it shows that a large percentage of people who suffer from EVALI have THC and Vitamin E acetate. In the long term, Vaping is addictive and according to the Centers for disease control, in 2022 about 2.55 million U.S. students who fall into middle and high school took e-cigarettes within the past 30 days.

Vaping could actually increase the risk of doing other forms of drugs or cigarettes. A lot of research is still ongoing on vaping and it is said to be less harmful than cigarettes but then its long-term effects are yet to be known study showed that the intake of e-cigarette smoke altered the lung immune system in mice causing the lungs of the mice to be prone to infection. It doesn't cause inflammations such as emphysema which is common with regular cigarettes but it would increase the macrophages' size as they were getting fatty as a result of lipids which is accumulated inside them exposing the lungs to infection. A lot of other research is being done but for now, research is still done, and one done on mice shows that vaping impairs the lungs. While companies that produce e-cigarettes are saying that it is safe, lots of research shows that it is harmful and that is a possibility as to why the CDC and USFDA keep sanctioning companies who say their products are safe.

Another risk is ease of nicotine addiction.

Cigarettes taste foul and it takes determination to keep going with them.

But vapes that taste like popcorn, or blueberries, or caramel. That's designed to get you hooked.

According to numerous studies, published in Nature and Lancet, smoking e-cigarettes or vaping does not appear to be a better alternative to smoking cigarettes. Imagine that. The problem, I think, lies in how it is perceived. Classic cigarette smoking is linked to a tradition and something we can relate to as negative, but vaping is not. It is more a symbol of youth and sophistication. So, what the evidence shows us is that, yes, it is dangerous and has very negative consequences.
