Diabetes isn’t Caused By Sugar Alone

You must have heard that sugar causes diabetes in fact if your memory serve you right, the time your 4th cousin from from your grandmother’s sister had diabetes, you heard people saying sugar was the cause. Because you hear something often doesn’t make it a fact and so I am happy to tell you that sugar alone doesn’t cause Diabetes.

If you have stayed with the elderly in this part of the world, you must have heard them say that taking bitter substances or herbs help to cancel out the sweet things that one has taken in the past but this isn’t true because it doesn’t work that way. Also not understanding dianetes is the number 1 reason for saying sugar intake alone leads to diabetes.

There are two types of diabetes with the first one being an autoimmune disease known as Type 1 diabetes, which happens when the body fights itself. The bidy fights to destroy the pancreas which is responsible for secreting insulin which is released when there there is lot of sugar in the blood. Its job if the allow the sugar get into the cells. When it is autoimmune, it doesn’t have anything to do with how much sugar is being consumed by the person taking it, it is just the immune system attacking the cels the releases insulin.

The second type is the one that usually get this bad press and this is type 2 diabetes but while it gets the sugar coverage, it is not caused solely by consuming sugar alone. A lot of factors come into play including genetics, weight, activeness or sedentary activity, diet and so on, and they affect how rhe body interacts and deals with sugar and not that sugar is the cause of the diabetes.

Whenever we eat food, the sugar level in the blood rises and insulin is released to reduce the sugar level as they enter into the cells and not stay in the blood. But in the case where the pancreas releases insulin but the cells are not responding to insulin as they have become resistant, then that’s type 2 diabetes.

Let’s not forget that glucose is the fuel the body needs and this is why the body converts food to glucose first before using for energy and this includes fat. There are a lot of risk factors for type 2 diabetes with one being overweight which can be triggered by consuming too much sugar and processed food. Other risk factors are family history, not exercising regularly, and consuming excess calories.

**Eating food food with lots of fibers along with the sugar helps the body to absorb the sugar slowly thereby not causing a spike in the blood sugar level but in the case of soda, the sugar would be absorbed fast into the blood leading to a spike in blood sugar level. With whole foods, the sugar level is not spiked and insulin isn’t released at high amount.

So when you are told to stop eating sugar, please do not mind them because your body need sugar to release energy but instead feed not natural sugar from fruit and whole food, instead of processed sugar and stay active while maintaining a healthy weight because Sugar alone is not responsible for diabetes.
