Reparation of a laptop invaded by ants. // Portátil invadido por hormigas. [ESP+ENG]

Como ya se habrán dado cuenta por el título y la portada, en esta ocasión les traigo un paso a paso del intento de reparación de un portátil que fue invadido por un nido de hormigas. Pero antes de comenzar quiero hacer dos aclaraciones.

As you may have noticed from the title and the cover, this time I bring you a step by step attempt to repair a laptop that was invaded by a nest of ants. But before I start I want to make two clarifications.

En primer lugar, tenemos el hecho de que el equipo llegó a mis manos en unas condiciones bastante malas pero libre de hormigas. Según me contó el dueño, retiró la tapa trasera del portátil y lo puso al sol para desalojar a las inquilinas. Dicho la anterior y con mucho pesar les informo que no posee fotos probatorias de dicha invasión.

First of all, we have the fact that the equipment arrived in my hands in a pretty bad condition but free of ants. According to what the owner told me, he removed the back cover of the laptop and put it in the sun to evict the tenants. Having said the above and with much regret I inform you that he does not have any evidentiary photos of this invasion.

También, como se darán cuenta en un momento, el PC presenta signos de mala manipulación interna. O sea que cuando digo que fue intento de reparación es porque evidentemente no tuvo arreglo, o al menos no el portátil porque su cargador sí.
Habiendo dicho esto solo queda empezar con el tutorial paso a paso de como diagnosticar y reparar un portátil que fue invadido por una colonia de hormigas y cuyo cargador no funcionaba en lo absoluto. Dicho tutorial lo realizaré en forma de anécdota para cambiar un poco la dinámica.

Also, as you will notice in a moment, the PC shows signs of internal mishandling. So when I say it was an attempt to repair it is because it was obviously beyond repair, or at least not the laptop because its charger was.
Having said that, it only remains to start with the step-by-step tutorial on how to diagnose and repair a laptop that was invaded by a colony of ants and whose charger did not work at all. This tutorial will be in the form of an anecdote to change the dynamics a little bit.

Paso a paso - Step to step

Primeramente, revisé el estado del cargador, ya que al conectarlo a la corriente no iluminaba el sensor de carga en el equipo. Si se preguntan por qué fui directo al cargador, la respuesta es evidente. ¡No tiene batería! 🔋

First of all, I checked the status of the charger, because when I connected it to the power supply, it did not light up the charging sensor on the device. If you're wondering why I went straight to the charger, the answer is obvious - it has no battery! 🔋

El cargador ya había sido manipulado, se encontraba abierto y tenía una muy chapucera soldadura directa en la placa del trasformador. Además, no contaba con el cable correcto para traer la corriente del enchufe al transformador.

The charger had already been tampered with, was open and had a very sloppy direct weld on the transformer board. In addition, it did not have the correct cable to bring power from the plug to the transformer.

Al percatarme del pésimo estado del cargador inmediatamente me propuse arreglarlo, pero antes tenía que medir si pasaba voltaje. Remuevo los cables soldados directamente y recorto sus puntas para volver a soldar. Limpio la base con fundente y la dejo lista para re-soldar.

When I noticed the poor condition of the charger I immediately set out to fix it, but first I had to measure if voltage was passing through. I remove the soldered wires directly and cut their tips to re-solder. I clean the base with flux and leave it ready to re-solder.

Luego de realizar la soldadura corté un pedazo fino de la barra de silicona y lo derrito sobre la soldadura para crear una capa de protección anticorte eléctricos. Así me aseguro de que no sufriré una descarga mientras lo manipulo y le agrego protección extra.

After soldering I cut a thin piece of silicone rod and melt it over the solder to create a layer of electrical cut protection. This ensures that I won't get a shock while handling it and adds extra protection.

Ya con el cargador listo lo vuelvo a comprobar con el voltímetro para comprobar si esta vez da el voltaje correcto. Y pues, si lo daba, así que lo conecté a la laptop a ver si el sensor de carga se encendía. Y también encendió.

Once the charger was ready, I checked it again with the voltmeter to see if this time it gave the correct voltage. Well, it did, so I connected it to the laptop to see if the charge sensor would turn on. And it also turned on.

Llegados a este punto mis expectativas eran muy altas, pues pensé que ese era problema y cuando presionará el botón de encendido todo funcionaría normal. Pero qué inocente fui, se me había olvidado el problema de las hormigas.

At this point my expectations were very high, because I thought that this was the problem and when I pressed the power button everything would work normally. But how innocent I was, I had forgotten about the ant problem.

Y pues nada, le daba una y otra vez al botón de encendido y nada, verifiqué si había voltaje en el botón y todo estaba correcto. Incluso probé con un mando a distancia que viene con un botón de encendido. Todo parecía indicar que las pequeñas habían hecho corto circuito en algún lugar de la placa.

So nothing, I hit the power button over and over again and nothing, I checked for voltage on the button and everything was fine. I even tried with a remote control that comes with a power button. Everything seemed to indicate that the little ones had short-circuited somewhere on the board.

Todavía con ánimo y sin ganas de rendirme, desarmo completamente el equipo hasta llegar a la placa base. Y cuál fue mi sorpresa al ver que a la placa le faltaban cintas y había conectores sueltos. Valla, que alguien había hecho un desastre con las conexiones a la placa.

Still in high spirits and not wanting to give up, I completely disassembled the equipment until I got to the motherboard. And what was my surprise to see that the board was missing tapes and there were loose connectors. Wow, someone had made a mess with the connections to the board.

Llegado a ese punto no tuve más remedio que rendirme, pues de nada sirve buscar el origen del problema, ya que ni el dueño actual tenía lo que faltaba. O sea que nuevamente me enfrentaba a las típicas señales de mal manejo y esta vez era por parte del dueño anterior.

At that point I had no choice but to give up, because there was no point in looking for the source of the problem, since not even the current owner had what was missing. So once again I was faced with the typical signs of mishandling and this time it was from the previous owner.

Pues resulta que originalmente el portátil funcionaba bien, pero pasó varios meses guardados en un cajón, ya que su disco duro había dejado de funcionar. Luego de unos meses de estar guardada la sacaron para regalársela al actual dueño. Ya en ese momento tenía a las pequeñas inquilinas, pero quizás no le faltaba todo lo otro.

It turns out that originally the laptop worked fine, but spent several months stored in a drawer, since its hard drive had stopped working. After a few months of being stored it was taken out to give it to the current owner. At that time it already had the little tenants, but perhaps it didn't lack everything else.

En resumen, el hecho de que no tuviese arreglo fue una verdadera lástima. Pero, era el portátil luchando contra las hormigas y contra la mala manipulación de su dueño.
