In the last post, we talked about sleep and anxiety. What we were able to gather was information about the negative cycle of anxiety where anxiety causes sleep problems and sleep problems can lead to anxiety. We also looked at anticipatory anxiety where the person is aware of the difficulty they might experience with anxiety before they go to bed.

It is also more common to sleep problems in Generalised anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Post Traumatic Disorder

We talked about avoiding coffee and alcohol as they especially can lead to worsening symptoms of anxiety. Caffeine especially acts to stimulate the sympathetic nervous system and can worsen symptoms of can lead to worsening anxiety symptoms

Having a good sleep-wake cycle can also help your body be more streamlined towards the proper timing for sleep.

In this post, we want to see how to behave when you are in a relationship with a person who is dealing with anxiety. In general, this post will comprise of tips…but we are still adding a special tip section don’t worry.

This is the Medic Vibes blog, where we help each other stay current on issues related to mental health. Good day, and I hope you are having a good one. A doctor and an illustrator, @ebingo is the person hosting this blog. Since we currently only have one writer and illustrator, we have not yet switched to our main blog. For the time being, we blog for the STEMsocial community. We discussed depression last month, and this month is all about anxiety. Just like this month, we began last month with a study from Nigeria that revealed a 50% prevalence of anxiety in a youth camp. We began examining Twitter posts after the study last month, and we are currently doing the same.

Mental health conditions called anxiety disorders to make a person more fearful and worried than usual. The majority of people are susceptible to this condition, but the younger generation is more likely to be affected.

For instance, a study we looked at revealed that nearly 50% of campers in Northwest Nigeria were experiencing anxiety. However, only 1% of Nigerians as a whole and about 3% of people worldwide suffer from anxiety.

Everyone has experienced the sensation of their heart racing before a significant test, a presentation, or a performance at some point in their lives. What if I told you, however, that some people experience that feeling daily? People who suffer from social anxiety worry that others will judge them. These are people that they might run into daily, like a boss or a coworker. People will therefore engage in avoidance. In our previous post, we examined how social anxiety in individuals can manifest itself in phone conversations.

Psychological symptoms like insomnia, flashbacks, nightmares, and others may be present in addition to the physical signs mentioned above.

Physical, psychological, and reactionary symptoms are all present in anxious people.

Stomach pain, chest pain, weakness, rapid breathing, and a rapid heartbeat are some of the physical symptoms. These are typically made known to the autonomic system's sympathetic firing.

The psychological signs of anxiety include nightmares, flashbacks, and sleep issues like insomnia, which we will discuss today.

Avoidance is one of the reactionary symptoms, which is present in both post-traumatic stress disorder and social anxiety.

According to the diagnostic and statistical manual, the cause of the anxiety changes from one subject to another and lasts for more than six months. Controlling it can be challenging. Children who experience anxiety frequently experience physical symptoms like pain, fatigue, jitteriness, and sleep problems, one of which is always present.

Because depression increases a person's risk of suicide, there is a relationship between depression and anxiety that makes it important to watch for changes as soon as they start to appear.

Relationships and anxiety

Verywellmind.com explains just how difficult it can be in a relationship with a person who has anxiety. In a post by Steven Gans MD, he explains how it is best to see the person and not the condition. Separating the person from the condition can help you have the right attitude towards your partner and aid you by not being judgemental.

It is important to note that anxiety is not a tool for manipulation and your partner suffering from this condition does not want to have the condition. You need to see them with that eye and now assume that they have an ulterior motive for the things they do.

Encouraging your partner to seek help is also helpful. Saying things like, “you need Help” which is rash and do not come from a place of care but comes from a need to get them off your back should not be said. Although I feel people are different, trying to know what your partner responds to is very important so that you can help them get help.

Tips

As mentioned previously, we will continue to stress that the mainstay of treatment for mental health issues is through the Bio-psycho-social route. Biological modifiers are things like drugs and pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy includes cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and other forms of talk therapy. Social therapy includes changes that have to be made by friends and family regarding the person.

Group therapy is particularly effective in dealing with anxiety in a relationship. It can help you understand all the peculiarities of the relationship you have with your partner.

(Edited)

I have no real playlist. There are a few bands I like (which date from my 20ies) , and then I let Spotify pick some random selection for me (so that I could discover new things).

Maybe we could work together...can I see your playlist so you'll play I'll sing for say Hive open mic?

I am unsure. I have never taken the time to participate to any of such sessions, mostly because I don't have the time ;)

Thanks for the proposal!
