In the last post, we looked at the distorted reality that is seen in anxiety and just how distorted it can get. I was of the option that the only mental health condition with that presentation was schizophrenia.

We found that the two forms of distortions that could be present in anxiety could beovergeneralisation where the formal stimulus that caused fear continues to cause fear even when a similar new stimulus does not pose a similar threat.

We also saw how those with anxiety could have issues paying attention because almost everything resembles a formal threat.

People with anxiety perceive the world differently—their brain lumps both safe and unsafe things together and labels them all unsafe.

In this post, we will be looking at a loss by Elon Musk on Twitter. Comment on the chat about how cool it would be to have Elon on Hive. So in case you didn’t do s well in Physics class (and I’m not saying you should…we all have our strong sides in the STEM fields) you’ll understand exactly what Elon is trying to say, Anxiety has magnitude but no direction while fear has magnitude and direction. Hope I got it right @lemout? Okay now, what I feel he is trying to say is that when you feel anxious you can’t point to the cause of the problem but when you feel afraid it is easier to define what you are afraid of.

Okay, fair point, but what I will do seeing as fear in anxiety or fear and anxiety might be search options that will still give us the same result as we have always gotten, I will try a different search out the cause of anxiety if there is nothing too peculiar.

This is the Medic Vibes blog, where we share information about mental health-related topics with one another. Welcome, and I hope you're having a good day. @ebingo, the blog's host, is a physician and an illustrator. Because we currently only have one writer and illustrator on staff, we have not yet switched to our primary blog. Right now, we are writing blogs for the STEMsocial community. We discussed depression last month, and this month is all about anxiety. Similar to this month, we began last month with a Nigerian study that revealed anxiety was 50% common in a youth camp. We began examining tweets after the study like we did last month.

Everyone can experience anxiety, but women and younger people are more likely to experience it than the general population due to higher levels of worry and fear.

In a study we looked at, we discovered that 50% of the campers at a youth camp in Northwestern Nigeria had anxiety symptoms and that over 3% of people worldwide also experience anxiety. Around 1% of the Nigerian population experiences anxiety.

Everyone has experienced heart palpitations before significant exams, presentations, or performances at some point in their lives. But what if I told you that some people have that sensation every day? People with social anxiety disorder are preoccupied with what others will think of them. One of these individuals, like their boss or a coworker, maybe someone with whom they interact frequently. People will therefore employ avoidance tactics. In one of our earlier posts, we discussed how social anxiety in individuals can be present during phone calls.

In anxious people, physical, psychological, and reactionary symptoms are all present.

Physical symptoms include things like chest pain, stomach pain, weakness, rapid breathing, and a rapid heartbeat. These are frequently caused by the autonomic nervous system's sympathetic firing.

The psychological symptoms of anxiety can include nightmares, flashbacks, and insomnia.

Avoidance is one of the reactionary signs and symptoms that can go along with social anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. This can be of both people and places.

The diagnostic and statistical manual states that the cause of anxiety varies from subject to subject and lasts for more than six months. Keeping it under control can be difficult. Pain, exhaustion, jitteriness, and sleep issues, one of which is persistent, are common in children with anxiety.

Risk Factors
With Anxiety disorders, when it comes to who can suffer from the condition, it is a little bit of genetics and a little bit of the environment.

Being shy, tending to avoid social situations, or staying away from certain places are all behavioural traits that raise a person's risk of anxiety.

As a child, being exposed to traumatic or extremely stressful events increases the likelihood of developing anxiety.

If a person has family members who struggle with anxiety disorders, they are also at risk.

An individual's risk of developing anxiety disorders is increased by several medical conditions, including thyroid problems and heart conditions like arrhythmias.

In general, if you're a woman, your chances of experiencing anxiety are higher. Higher testosterone levels may have a calming effect, according to some researchers, while others believe this is due to hormonal changes that take place during the monthly menstrual cycle. Some people think that therapy for anxiety is less common for women.

Because depression and anxiety are linked, and because depression raises a person's risk of suicide, it is crucial to be alert for any changes as soon as they manifest.

Anxiety and Fear

I found exactly what I was looking for online, Anxiety Vs Fear. Who would have thought that Elon Musk knew what he was saying…I did.

In this post by Baton Rouge Behavioural Hospital titled:

Fear vs Anxiety Understanding the Difference

According to the post, Just like Elon Explained, Fear seems to be directed towards a stimulus, the article describes it as biological while Anxiety has many paths away from the trigger and is directed at what may happen. They feel the same way and can be confused…Sorry to be an Elon ass kisser, but distance and displacement feel the same way if the number of meters between them is the same….but I digressed more into physics again.

According to the article, they explain every animal higher animal experiences some level of fear. It helps to protect us from getting hurt by offensive elements. The body’s physiology is also altered in response to this fear.

In anxiety, the reaction is directed to the emotions felt and not the situation at hand.

To give an analogy of the difference, when I was a boy, I use to run past a bush at night when I was sent on errands. I was generally afraid of seeing a snake. If I saw a snake my reaction would be the same as if I heard a sound from that bush that made me think a snake was about to come out of the bushes.

First, at the sight of the snake, my pupils would dilate to see well in the dark, and my heart would start beating faster and harder to make sure blood reaches skeletal muscles for running, I might get startled and start running a little faster than I usually would.

Anxiety is hearing the sounds of s snake from the bushes, fear is seeing the snake come out of the bushes. Fear is directed towards the snake, anxiety does not have a specific direction, if I heard a sound that was like a snake, saw something that looked like a snake or had a friend shout snake…my response would be the same.

As a kid back then I was short-sighted and had not been prescribed glasses so odds are I would never have seen a snake unless it was closer than arm's length but you get the whole point.

Tips

Always remember that alcohol and caffeine use can precipitate symptoms of anxiety. Caffeine especially takes away the body’s natural response to fatigue, so less sleep more anxiety, more anxiety, less sleep and the cycle will continue especially when you don’t get the much-needed help.

Hive Stories

@corvidae writes about her travel experience, with lovely scenery. The post is very captivating the photos are crisp and clear.

Questions

  • What did you learn about anxiety?
  • What did you learn about fear?
  • What are the differences between them?

Conclusion

Fear is a Vector quantity and anxiety is more scalar. There is also the hope of the patient being aware of the fact that the mental disorder has this characteristic.

I hope that you learned a lot from this post.
