Hace unos días un vecino me trajo una laptop para que le diera un diagnóstico del porqué se apagaba repentinamente luego de encender, lo primero que hice fue preguntar desde cuando estaba así, su respuesta fue, que la había llevado con un señor para que le instalara Windows y cuando se la entrego días después empezó la falla.

Tomando en cuenta que, es de la marca HP, la falla más común de estas es el hecho de que su GPU falla por recalentamiento al punto de dejar de dar imagen en pantalla, la ingeniería tras su disipación es tan mala que causa esta falla, claro que solo pasa en equipos de muchos años atrás, pero esta vez la falla era diferente, no podía dar un diagnóstico sin revisar el equipo, le pedí que esperara un poco mientras quitaba la tornillería para verificar que lo que me contaba era cierto, creo que aprendí a cubrir mi espalda en estos casos, luego de desarmar el equipo me encontré con el primer fallo, el ventilador encargado de la disipación del equipo no era exactamente el de él, por alguna razón tenía un ventilador mucho más pequeño y sujetado por cintas doble cara, de inmediato mostré a mi vecino y le dije que este era el causal de que su equipo se apagara solo, explicándole de manera que me entendiera el porqué, este supuso que la anterior persona le había cambiado este componente, por alguna razón, por estas cosas siempre abro los equipos delante de sus dueños, decidió dejarlo para ver que podía hacer.

Luego de esto decidí terminar de desarmar por completo, hacer una limpieza y volver a armar todo mientras pensaba que hacer con el disipador, cuando quite el bloque térmico del procesador, este que lleva el headpipe que se refrigera mediante el ventilador, me encontré con algo que siempre me ha parecido una práctica idiota e ineficiente, había pasta térmica por todos lados, pareciera que esta preciada pasta la regalaran y simplemente estas personas aplican una cantidad absurda, supongo que con la creencia de que, más es mejor, y tendrán una refrigeración mejor, nada más alejado de la realidad, aplicar una cantidad excesiva solo hace que esta se expanda por fuera del IHS (integrated heat spreader) y entre en contacto con otros componentes.

Luego de un rato largo, limpiando con Alcohol Isopropílico e hisopos, logre retirar toda esta pasta térmica, lo peor es que había dos tipos de pasta térmica, una encima de la otra, supongo que la última vez que la llevaron a servicio, simplemente no limpiaron el procesador y GPU, simplemente aplicaron más y volvieron a armar, terminada la limpieza empece a armar, reemplazando los thermal pad y colocando pasta térmica nueva y en una cantidad que para mí es suficiente, ni mucho ni poco, lo necesario para cubrir la superficie del procesador, pero esto no terminaba allí, tenía que ver que hacer con este disipador, busque por MercadoLibre y MarketPlace, tenía la esperanza de encontrar un reemplazo y dejar el equipo lo más original posible, esto me fue imposible, pasaron dos días y no pude encontrar, llame al dueño y le explique, su respuesta fue, que necesitaba la laptop, que le hiciera lo mejor posible, para que volviera a funcionar.

After a long time, cleaning with Isopropyl Alcohol and swabs, I managed to remove all this thermal paste, the worst thing is that there were two types of thermal paste, one on top of the other, I guess the last time they took it to service, they simply did not clean the processor and GPU, simply applied more and reassembled, finished cleaning I started to assemble, replacing the thermal pad and placing new thermal paste and in an amount that for me is enough, neither too much nor too little, just enough to cover the surface of the processor, but this did not end there, I had to see what to do with this heatsink, I searched MercadoLibre and MarketPlace, I was hoping to find a replacement and leave the equipment as original as possible, this was impossible, two days passed and I could not find, I called the owner and explained, his response was that he needed the laptop, he did his best to make it work again.

Decidi buscar entre los repuestos que he acumulado durante años, encontré un disipador mucho más grande, tuve que cambiar el conector a la placa y luego de ingeniármelas un poco quedo lo mejor posible, no podía hacer más así que empece a armar este rompecabezas, luego de un buen rato ya estaba presionando el botón de encendido de esta, luego de un minuto, la pantalla de Windows 7 apareció, pero no podía cantar victoria, pasados 15 minutos la laptop aún seguía encendida, monitoree el sistema con la herramienta HWMonitor por unas horas más, todo marchaba bien, se venía una victoria más para mí, pero decidí dar una prueba más, tenía que ver si esta se mantenía encendida sin ningún problema, dándole el mismo uso que el dueño le daba, así que me fui a la cama con esta, abrí mi cuenta de Netflix y aprovechando que se había lanzado la última temporada de Manifiesto, decidí conectarla al TV, mediante un cable HDMI, duplicando la pantalla, vi aproximadamente 6 capítulos seguidos, la laptop funciono excelente, las temperaturas excelentes y nada de thermal throttling.

Por la mañana llame al dueño, este vino, verifico el equipo y muy contento me pregunto, cuanto me debía, no pregunto nada más, simplemente pago y se fue alegre y de la misma manera quede yo, sabiendo que había ganado un nuevo cliente.
