Francisco de Miranda Viaduct, Mérida - Venezuela Eng - Esp

Hello dear friends of Hive. A special greeting to all lovers of architecture and design. Today I am happy to have the opportunity to share with you again, a new experience, knowing and learning from the works created by man.

In the city of Merida, we find three main viaducts that connect the different avenues of the city, since the Albarregas River runs through the middle of them. Each of them have different characteristics in their geometry and design; however, two of them are very similar.

Hola queridos amigos de Hive. Un saludo especial a todos los amantes de la arquitectura y el diseño. Hoy estoy feliz de tener la oportunidad de volver a compartir con ustedes, una nueva experiencia, conociendo y aprendiendo de las obras creadas por el hombre.

En la ciudad de Mérida, encontramos tres viaductos principales que permiten conectar las distintas avenidas de la ciudad, ya que en medio de ellas pasa el Río Albarregas. Cada uno de ellos, tienen características diferentes en su geometría y diseño; sin embargo, dos de ellos son muy similares.

At the end of last year, in one of my tours around the city, I discovered that the Miranda Viaduct and the Sucre Viaduct were being rehabilitated and in both of them they were installing a trellis in order to ensure the safety of its users and protect life, since unfortunately, these viaducts have been the scene of difficult decisions and sad stories, increasing the suicide rate in the city progressively in recent years.

Undoubtedly, it is something that was needed, since previously there was only a protective wall and a metal railing, allowing a wide and majestic view of the river and its surroundings. This was my favorite part, because enjoying the natural scenery while walking on them felt amazing; however, sometimes it made me a little dizzy to look down.

A finales del año pasado, en uno de mis recorridos por la ciudad, descubrí que el Viaducto Miranda y el Viaducto Sucre, estaban siendo rehabilitados y en ambos estaban instalando un enrejado con la finalidad de garantizar la seguridad de sus usuarios y resguardar la vida, ya que lamentablemente, estos viaductos han sido el escenario de decisiones difíciles e historias tristes, aumentando la tasa de suicidios en la ciudad de manera progresiva en los últimos años.

Sin duda, es algo que era necesario, ya que anteriormente solo existía un muro protector y una baranda metálica, permitiendo una vista amplia y majestuosa del río y sus alrededores. Esta era mi parte favorita, porque disfrutar del paisaje natural mientras caminaba sobre ellos, se sentía increíble; sin embargo, a veces me daba un poco de vértigo mirar hacia abajo.

A few days ago, I was walking with my family, and we were able to see the final result of the Francisco Miranda Viaduct. This is the second viaduct, it communicates Las Americas Avenue with Urdaneta Avenue, it has a length of 300 linear meters, has three lanes of traffic in each direction, the roadway is asphalt and on both sides it has comfortable concrete sidewalks. I did some research and discovered in this web page of the construction company (source) that it was inaugurated in 1980.

Hace unos días, me encontraba de paseo con mi familia, y logramos ver el resultado final del Viaducto Francisco Miranda. Este es el segundo viaducto, comunica a la Av. las Américas con la Av. Urdaneta, tiene una longitud de 300 metros lineales, cuenta con tres carriles de circulación por sentido, la calzada es de asfalto y en ambos laterales cuenta con cómodas aceras de concreto. Investigue un poco y descubrí en esta página web, de la empresa constructora (fuente) que fue inaugurado en el año 1980.

I really liked the result because I think the colors give joy to the place, the chromatic effect it generates is harmonious and attractive and gives a bit of modernity to the space. I can't deny that at the same time I miss having an unobstructed view, but safety is a priority.

Me gusto mucho el resultado porque creo que los colores le dan alegría al lugar, el efecto cromático que genera es armonioso y atractivo y le da un poco de modernidad al espacio. No puedo negar que al mismo tiempo extraño tener la vista despejada, pero la seguridad es prioridad.

The bolts they used look of good size and quality. I hope the metal can be kept in good condition for a long time and this can only be achieved with proper maintenance. I am pleased with this change.

Los pernos que usaron se ven de buen tamaño y calidad. Espero que pueda mantenerse el metal en buen estado por mucho tiempo y esto solo se logra con el mantenimiento adecuado. Estoy satisfecha con en este cambio.

I couldn't leave this opportunity to do something I had wanted to do for a long time and that was to look under the bridge and get to know its structure. Sometimes, I think why during the race we never did field practice here. We accessed the bridge from Las Americas Avenue, through the Metropolitan Park, and as we descended some stairs, I was able to delight in its robust structure.

No podía dejar esta oportunidad, para hacer algo que quería hacer desde hace mucho tiempo y era curiosear un poco debajo del puente conocer su estructura. A veces, pienso porque durante la carrera nunca hicimos prácticas de campo aquí. Accedimos al puente desde la Av. las Américas, a través del Parque Metropolitano, y al bajar algunas escaleras, pude deleitarme de su robusta estructura.

One of the things that excites me about engineering is how robust reinforced concrete structures are. This bridge is supported by huge piers that sit underground, I imagine at a considerable depth, as the foundations must be in solid ground.

For me, seeing the viaduct from this perspective was a unique and enriching experience. Seeing the size of the abutments, the geometry of the load bearing beams and the deck, makes you think about the weight they must support and the function of each element separately and how together they balance the loads.

Overall, it is in good condition, but to keep a structure as it is standing for many years it is necessary to perform the necessary maintenance in a timely manner.

Una de las cosas que me apasiona de la Ingeniería es lo robusta que son las estructuras de concreto armado. Este puente está sostenido por enormes pilas que se asientan el subsuelo, me imagino que a una profundidad considerable, ya que los cimientos deben estar en suelo firme.

Para mi ver, el viaducto desde esta perspectiva fue una experiencia única y enriquecedora. Ver el tamaño de los estribos, la geometría de las vigas de carga y el tablero, te hace pensar en el peso que deben soportar y en la función de cada elemento por separado y como juntos equilibran las cargas.

En término generales, se encuentra en buen estado, pero para mantener una estructura como está de pie por muchos años es necesario realizar el mantenimiento necesario a tiempo.

Something that pleasantly surprised us was to find a park adapted for sports, skateboarding and a sports court. It is fully conditioned so that young people have this space for sports and recreational activities. It has restrooms and an adequate space. This park is called the Spot.

Algo que nos sorprendió gratamente fue encontrar un parque adaptado para deportes, skateboarding y una cancha deportiva. Está totalmente acondicionado para que los jóvenes tengan este espacio para realizar actividades deportivas y recreativas. Cuenta con baños y un espacio adecuado. Este parque se llama el Spot.

Undoubtedly, this viaduct is a civil work of great relevance for the dynamism of the city, which boosts the modernization of the city and guarantees an adequate distribution of traffic and transportation. What do you think of the new viaduct grating?
