Going back to Apple with a new iMac

Man, I missed this OS

It has been almost two years since I got rid of my MacBook and got a windows laptop that I had been using for the majority of my photo/video editing. I have hated just about every second of using the Windows operating system. Last night, I went to Costco and got one of the newer model iMacs that they had for sale.

The new 27 inch iMacs were in sale for $300 off, so I decided it was time for me to get back to what I was used to and love. When I was learning all the different photo/video editing softwares, I was taught everything on a Mac, so it has been nice to get back to what I was used to.

There are many people out there that say that Apple products are overpriced, and that is true that they do cost more than other computers, but I have found that their convenience and reliability is well worth the extra price. I have never had my MacBook lock up on me, but every PC I have ever owned had issues wit it.

One thing I love about Apple is how easy it is to share things between their different products. All of their products run Apple's OS, so it is familiar across all devices. After I got my Windows laptop, I was pretty bummed that I couldn't airdrop pictures and files from my phone or iPad to my computer without going through a ton of different steps.

Each device is basically an extension of the other one. I have used my iPad as an extra screen for drawing or photo editing and all the edits transfer directly to the files on the computer. So to me, that type of seamless workflow is well worth the cost.

So far, I have only found one thing that I am not a fan of. The headphones jack is in kind of a stupid location and sometimes when I move the screen, or touch my cord to my speakers, it squeals pretty loud like the jack is grounded out to the metal on the computer. I am not sure if it is mainly because of the input jack's shape, but it can get annoying. Luckily it doesn't happen too often.

Now this keyboard is going to take some getting used to because it is a lot smaller than the one I am used to, plus the keys have a super small profile and dont really stick up at all. At first, I hated this keyboard and was going to just plug in my old desktop keyboard and use that, but then as I was messing with this keyboard and trying to figure things out, I noticed that it has a lot of different buttons to control media and other things on it. I can easily use it to switch between apps and there are so many different controls in it. So once I am used to the feel of this thing, it will help with workflow.

I just ordered some more RAM for it because it only came with 8GB. 8GB is a decent amount for normal use, but I wanted to make sure that I have plenty of RAM, so I ended up ordering an extra 32GB. I may buy another 32GB in the near future because this website is a lot cheaper than buying it directly from Apple. I got the 16GBx2, so I will have two extra slots that I can put the other two 16GB sticks if I do upgrade again.

Overall, I am very excited to be back to running a full suite of Apple products for my workflow. Photo editing is so much better on an iMac as compared to my laptop. The screen is a 5K screen and nothing beats Apple's color profile for their screens. One thing I have always loved about Apple is how their colors are always consistent. My desktop I had sucked for this and my photos didn't look the same on different devices.

Hm... Drag'n'drop the files into/from the cloud does not seem to be that much of an issue to me ;)

But to be honest, I am not (and never was) a big fan of apple products.
Anyways, glad you enjoy you purchase and I am sure it will serve you well :)

Ya, you either love Apple or you don't. As someone that has done UX/UI design, I love the ease of their interface.

So awesome! I did something almost identical during black Friday 2019. I went to Costco and go the 27-inch iMac. I was still using my 27-inch 2009 iMac, so I was due for an upgrade. And then I also ordered new RAM from OWC. Excited for you! I love my iMac, and can't wait for the new version due out next year. I will probably get one of those too. lol

I thought about waiting for the next generation of models to release, but didn't want to wait. Upgrading the ram in this one should make it very comparable to the new ones though. I hope you are able to get the one you want.

Yeah, it will be 6 months yet probably before the new ones come out. Thanks!

That's a sick deal dude! Welcome back to the magical (and costly) world of Apple. Glad you were able to get you a nice big iMac. I've been loving mine and it was one of the best upgrades I've made in quite some time.

Are you going to stick with the Magic Mouse? I have been, but have also considered getting a Magic Trackpad.

Also, I've been pretty satisfied with my Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad. It is still a small keyboard but gives you a lot more with the extension on the right side. Also, the touch ID makes signing in so easy and I love it.

I need to look at the larger keyboard. Mine doesn't have the numbers on the side or a Touch ID. But I am liking it more and more as I use it. I love the mouse too. I forgot all about it for this post, but it is really cool to be able to swipe and stuff with the mouse and move between applications really easily. I had one a few years ago with my MacBook when it first came out.

The numbers a nice bonus, as well as the extra function keys up top if you're into utilizing shortcuts. The main thing for me is the touch id, I couldn't go back from having it now.

The mouse works very well, but I hate how the charge port is on the bottom of it. Luckily the battery life is amazing. I got used to my trackpad on my old MacBook Pro and kind of wish I still had that option. It is not essential, but a possible upgrade for me in the future. Sucks it costs $130 though.

Ya. That charge port is a pretty poor design, but I don’t know where else they would put it. I just plug it in when I’m not using the computer and they do last forever and charge really fast.

I’m not sure either. No room on the front. The size wouldn’t work very well if you were trying to still use it.

I think they’re happy with the fact that the battery lasts so long and it charges fast as shit. Really the location of the port isn’t a huge deal unless you focus on it an absurd amount 😅

Ya, I'm not too worried about it. It is such an awesome mouse.

Niiice. I love Apple too.
My good pal is really good with computers, and is a fellow videographer. He built a PC which is incredibly powerful, more than a Mac, but often talks about how sick he is of the Window OS and interface.

Is yours an Intel model rather than the new M1?

I use my 27” 5K (2017) iMac model for all my video work and it’s still fine with 4K video but it’s showing it’s age a bit now.

I hope they bring out an iMac 27” M1 Pro. That would be a beast.💪

All the best with your new machine man!

I don't have the one with the M1 processor in it. Those models are the smaller and thinner ones. Not the large 5K screen. I wanted the larger screen for my photo editing. Hopefully the ram upgrade gives me a lot more use out of it and doesn't get sluggish. I know what your friend means about being sick of windows. I bought a really powerful laptop that I had been using, but I hate windows so much.

For me/us Apple is the only way. I switched like 8 years ago and never went back. Even I got so much trouble with my current 13" Macbook Pro (the flex cable issue) I would never buy anything else. Have fun with the new machine :)

I have heard of people not liking that cable. I am glad it is something I don’t have to deal with on this computer.

It definitely was bs what they made with that cable. They simply made it too short so it breaks after a while, especially if you open it more than 90 degree.

This is awesome! I got myself a Macbook Pro 2021. I don't want to miss it for editing. I believe you with every word that you hated editing on the windows' laptop 😝
What's a really nice add on is a nice and decent trackpad with a pencil.

Man, I was so tempted to get a MacBook Pro. My old one was a beast and was so amazing at photo and video editing. I hope you have a lot of fun creating with it.

Yeah I do! I got the 14' cause of mobility. I have a 32' Monitor at home with decent color levels. But my GF is using it most of the day xD She felt in love with it. Someday I give it to her, and get myself the 16'. When editing on it, 14' is a bit too small in my opinion.

But iMac is next level. The display is awesome and the performance as well. You are going to have a lot of fun editing! Your drone files will love it. No buffering. Just smooth editing :D
