The Resistance to Web 3: Exploring the Factors Holding People Back

Technology is a beautiful thing. With every advancement we see in it, there’s huge evolutionary changes. We watched the internet start out from it’s earliest days (Web 1), evolve to web 2, and now the sophisticated and much improved web 3 we’re looking at.

But improvement in tech doesn’t guarantee adoption. If that was the case, everyone in the world would’ve dumped their 20-year-old basic phones and pick up the latest iPhone. Of course, the latest iPhone doesn’t represent web 3, but it’s a analogy of improvements in Tech.

If we love technological advancements so much, why isn’t everyone adopting Web 3 as fast as we anticipated to see though?

Sophistication

It’s pretty obvious how sophisticated and overwhelming web 3 platforms like Hive can be. There’re so many different features to it and so much to do on it. To start up on places like Hive, you’ll need coaching.

From things like what cryptocurrency is, markdown styling, to complications like the many different unique keys each person has and what each of those keys do, layer 1 and layer 2. Things like staking, transactions, and all that might be confusing to the typical web 2 user and will discourage them from moving over here.

Sentiment

Humans are sentimental beings and their sentiment (or attachment) is what keeps them loyal to web 2 platforms like Twitter and the likes. The sentiment might not necessarily be about themselves, but about the people they’ve created connections with.

For most people, it’s difficult to leave a web 2 platform like Facebook or Twitter where they’ve already built a massive following to a “less popular” platform like Hive where they have little to no followers. But most people forget that the essence of having many followers is usually so you can monetize your page better. The ironic thing is that on Web 3 platforms like Hive, even though having a large following could influence your success, it’s not essential because rewards are spread over so many different parameters.

But talking about rewards, the typical web 2 user probably doesn’t know that as a content creator they can own and monetize their content on platforms like Hive. Which drives to my next point…

Ignorance

How do you adopt something you’re not even aware of? Hilarious, right?

Well, that’s the simple basis for why there’s not much enthusiasm in web 3 adoption. Some people just don’t know about the existence of web 3. Others do, but don’t know what they can do with it. Things like the metaverse are not widespread yet because of this.

Things like censorship resistance, direct content monetization, and account ownership are strange terms to some people still.Because they see web 2 and traditional internet only as a place to share memes, pictures and watch videos – all things they do for free, in complete ignorance of the fact that there are alternatives out there where they get rewarded for as much as joining and listening to podcasts that even educate them.
But ignorance doesn’t just end at a lack of knowledge. Sometimes, ignorance is being shallow-minded. Some people are quick to judge or decide when they don’t know enough about something to make a judgement yet.

A few months ago, a twitter rumble was stirred up when @ queenstarr pitched HBD’s 20% saving to some “web 3 enthusiast” or whatever he said he was. I think his name was Jack? Yeahh something like that. Jacked basically called the 20% on HBD savings a Ponzi scheme in ignorance of what Hive was and how the 20% savings is foolproof. Thankfully though, the Hive community caught wind of this and sessions were scheduled to school our wannabe web 3 enthusiast.

Need

Humans are simple beings. For some people, the fact that there’s a better product on the market doesn’t mean they’ll leave their old gadget. Some people only do upgrades when they have to, and not because there’s something better available. So as long as they don’t see a need to hop on the web 3 train, they’ll ride web 2 until their last days.

I can’t even go down the list of people I’ve told about Hive, only to be met with disinterest and in some cases, Ponzi scheme accusations. In the end, people have to be open-minded enough to be open to the thought of understanding and welcoming an idea or development they’re not already familiar with.

There are layers to the issue but I think one of the main root causes is the limited mindset that many people have about it. I tried bringing a few people on Hive but they're unwillingly to learn and explore the ecosystem. They rather spend that time on traditional social media wasting their time on 'meaningless entertainment'. I think they're addicted to web2 platforms :)

Haha yeah I guess we could call it addiction too. That grows from the attachment of having used web2 for long, hence a fear of moving over to web2 and starting fresh. Or maybe they’re just too in love with web 2 to even consider giving web3 a chance.😂

Lol, it could be both of them. Web2 has captured their hearts and minds so much so that they're unwillingly to try something else. I'm hoping that it will change in the future.

The situation with Jack just proves a lack of education and unwillingness to learn. People just comment and say what they want without making the necessary research and asking the questions.

Yeah in his case, I think he wanted the attention. Unfortunately, he got more than what he wanted.😂

Honestly, grasping web3 iteration isn't a simple task. It requires unwavering dedication and resilience. Until we subject ourselves to change and be in a position to move from our old ways, it will pose a challenge. Great insight you've shared.

This is spoken from experience. I love how you put it. Web3 is for intentional people and people willing to learn and evolve.
