Civic Museum of Natural History of Trieste

Hello Hivers friends and welcome back to my Blog,

During my last trip to Trieste I was lucky enough to visit the naturalistic collection of the Civic Museum of Natural History.

Trieste is a city rich in culture and this museum, in particular, contains thousands of finds belonging to the world of botany, geography, geology and zoology.

Durante la mia ultima gita a Trieste ho avuto la fortuna di visitare la collezione naturalistica del Museo Civico di Storia Naturale.

Trieste è una città ricca di cultura e questo museo, in particolare, contiene migliaia di reperti appartenenti al mondo della botanica, della geografia, della geologia e della zoologia.

This museum fascinated me because it hosts numerous rooms, where in each one a scientific theme is described, including:

  • The origins of life;
  • The origins of man;
  • The first hominids;
  • Marine mammals;
  • Skeletons;
  • The food chain;
  • Caves;
  • Dinosaurs.

Questo museo mi ha affascinato perché ospita numerose stanze, dove in ognuna viene descritta una tematica scientifica, tra cui:

  • Le origini della vita;
  • Le origini dell’uomo;
  • I primi ominidi;
  • I mammiferi marini;
  • Gli scheletri;
  • La catena alimentare;
  • Le grotte;
  • I dinosauri.

The area that left the greatest impression on me, however, is the one dedicated to stones and minerals.

I learned that crystals have a symmetry, due to the arrangement of atoms inside the nucleus. We can have minerals with cubic, hexagonal, trigonal systems, …

Gems, on the other hand, are those minerals that have hardness characteristics that allow them to be cut and cleaned. Some examples of gems are emeralds, rubies, diamonds and sapphires.

La zona che mi è rimasta più impressa, però, è quella dedicata alle pietre e ai minerali.

Ho imparato che i cristalli presentano una simmetria, dovuta alla disposizione degli atomi all’interno del nucleo. Possiamo avere minerali a sistema cubico, esagonale, trigonale, …

Le gemme, invece, sono quei minerali che hanno caratteristiche di durezza tali da permettere di essere tagliati e puliti. Alcuni esempi di gemme sono gli smeraldi, i rubini, i diamanti e gli zaffiri.

Geology is a fascinating science. You have reminded me of my high school years, when we had to learn all those minerals. At that time I made an attempt at a collection that I didn't continue. My favourites are agates and desert roses, I find them the most beautiful aesthetically. I prefer them to any gemstone even if the latter have more economic value. Thank you for this fantastic tour.

Queste pietre sono bellissime, quella che mi ha colpito più di tutte è l’Agata. I suoi colori stratificati e le sue venature concentriche attirano in maniera decisa la mia attenzione. !BEER

Ho riguardato il talco grezzo! Bello anche quello, forse la lucentezza non è rappresentata bene dalla foto. Nel riguardare la foto sono stato colpito dalla formula chimica! Mg3Si4O10(OH2), magnesio, silicio e ossidrile. Non so perchè quando l’ho rivista mi è piaciuta. Ho fatto una piccola ricerca ed ho scoperto che nella scala di Mohs (una scala empirica usata per misurare la durezza dei minerali) è il minerale con durezza 1. Quindi non solo è bello, ma è anche un punto di riferimento per quella scala che misura la durezza. !HUG
