When I was in Tokyo last May, Tears of the Kingdom launched in the country. A couple people in my group were able to pick up the special edition switch OLED for significantly cheaper than what it cost back home! In America, that same Switch retailed for $350, and was pretty much only available as a preorder. We were able to walk up to the counter at Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara and pick them up for ~$280 at the exchange rate at the time.

The used market seems to be cheaper in Japan from what I heard and in the west it's overrun by scalpers...

Yes and no. The majority of that cost difference is due to the exchange rate, which currently sits around ¥140/$1USD. There are tubes where games are actually cheaper outside Japan. Case in point: Persona 4 Arena. It was cheaper (at the time) for Japanese gamers to buy an American copy of the game import it to Japan. This is why it's one of three games region locked on the PS3.
Ah, good to know that there are cheaper games in the west than Japan.
