Repairing my Iomega external hard drive case [ENG/SPA]

In an effort to make operational several of my devices that I have saved since they presented some failure, I set out to recover a portable disk that I lent to back up some information, and give it back to me since it was not turning on, so here I will be sharing what I did to turn it on again.

En un esfuerzo por poner operativos varios de mis dispositivos que tengo guardados ya que presentaron alguna falla, me dispuse a recuperar un disco portátil que preste para que se respaldara una información, y dármelo de vuelta ya no encendía, así que por acá estaré compartiendo que hice para poder encenderlo nuevamente.

It took me a long time to turn it on, I didn't need to know why it didn't turn on immediately, it was when I needed to use a backup file there that I remembered to check it. It is a somewhat old technology, requiring an external 12V power supply to operate, unlike other more modern drives where 5V from the USB port is enough.

Encenderlo me tomó bastante tiempo, no me era necesario saber porque no encendía inmediatamente, fue cuando necesite utilizar un archivo ahí respaldo que recordé que debía revisarlo. Es una tecnología algo vieja, que requiere de una fuente de poder de 12V externa para operar, no como otros discos mas modernos que con los 5V del puerto USB es suficiente.

The first thing I did was to check if it fell and any internal connection was loose or broken, if I had to solder some point with tin, or worse, the disk itself suffered damage by falling, because mechanical disks are much more vulnerable than solid state, this is a Seagate disk model Barracuda 7200.11, but thank God everything was fine it was not necessary to solder anything, everything looked in order.

Lo primero que hice fue revisar si se cayó y alguna conexión interna se soltó o rompió, sí tenía que resoldar algún punto con estaño, o peor aún, el disco mismo sufrió daño por caída, porque los discos mecánicos son mucho mas vulnerables que los de estado sólido, este es un disco Seagate modelo Barracuda 7200.11, pero gracias a dios todo estaba bien no fue necesario soldar nada, todo se veía en orden.

To rule out it was time to check the power supply or transformer, verify if the terminal that connects to the disk was not broken internally. Both the terminal and the cable are fine, the next thing was to check if it was delivering the necessary voltage, 12 volts to be exact, that's where I got the failure, the transformer was not working.

Por descarte tocaba revisar la fuente de poder o transformador, verificar si el terminal que se conecta al disco no estaba partido internamente. Tanto el terminal como el cable se encuentran bien, lo siguiente fue verificar si entregaba el voltaje necesario, 12 voltios para ser exactos, fue ahí donde conseguí la falla, el transformador no funcionaba.

I had to look for a transformer with the same characteristics, which is almost impossible because 12V and 1.5A is not very common. I found one of 12V but 1A, I tested it and it works fine, the next thing was to look on the official website of Iomega for the datasheet and check if it can operate with less current, but the website seems to have stopped working.

Me toco buscar un transformador con las mismas características, lo que es casi que imposible, porque de 12V y de 1.5A nos es muy común. Encontré uno de 12V pero de 1A lo probe y funciona bien, lo siguiente era buscar en la página oficial de Iomega la hoja técnica y verificar si puede operar con menos corriente, pero el sitio web parece que dejo funcionar.

I took the risk and connected the disk to the transformer and it turned on, and finally I could access it, however, when trying to make a very large file load that takes the disk to its maximum spinning revolution, it shuts down, because the transformer delivers 0.5A less than the original one, so I must continue the search for a similar one.

Tome el riesgo y conecte el disco al transformador y este encendió, y finalmente pude acceder a él, sin embargo, al intentar hacer una carga de archivo muy grande que lleve el disco a su maxima revolución de giro, se apaga, debido a que el transformador entrega 0.5A menos que el original, asi que debo continuar la búsqueda de uno similar.

At the moment I can download small files, but I can not use it to play video, as I usually record movies on it and put it on the TV directly, or when there is some internet failure, my daughter can see all the animated movies that I have backed up. I confess that it is very difficult to find one with these features but I do not give up, otherwise I will have to remove the disk and use it connected to the motherboard of the PC.

Por el momento me es posible descargar archivos pequeños, pero no lo puedo utilizar así para reproducir video, ya que suelo grabar las peliculas en él y ponerlo en el televisor directamente, o cuando hay alguna falla de internet, mi hija puede ver todas las películas animadas que le tengo respaldadas. Confieso que esta muy complicado encontrar uno con esas características pero no me rindo, de lo contrario me tocara retirar el disco y usarlo conectado a la tarjeta madre de la PC.
