Compute energy

At first, energy was reserved for living things. Let's take for instance, the sun and how essential it is for plant, animal and human existence. Exception of that, we need to consume food to stay very active and productive. We have lived to see how nature recycles this; the taking in of oxygen and sending out of carbon dioxide. The taking in of food and various excretory means to restart the process. Does nature not astound you? Maybe we've become so use to it that it seems to normal; I must say there is enough work done/energy expended every second to run the Earth.

God made man and man invented machines. If we look at man's early days of invention energy was still a necessity. Let's say using a mull in the agricultural sector, using chariots and all of that. It was then very manual until we shifted to the next phase. We saw motorcycles, cars and trains which relied on energy to still thrive. These opened doors for efficient and effective use case of fossil fuels. Looking at industries, this energy was needed to power up the industrial age. It brought in opportunities and overtime made a lot of energy custodians very rich. This energy are still in use today coupled with several new discovered ones.

Let's look at how electricity has revamped global industries. It was at first 'water to mechanical to light energy', but we've seen advancement in this industry. Chemical energy has led to steady light generation, we've seen solar, the wind vane energy conversion and any other you can imagine. I am just trying to set a foundation on energy so we understand its importance and how it will be needed to drive the next generation technology. We are growing into a tech world where capacity is becoming very essential. The computerized age is sapping energy for computation and this indeed is worth considering.

How many of us have phones and laptops and other computable gadget? With over 5 billion humans using the Internet as of this year's analysis you can clearly answer this question. I would really love to focus on AI but let just through some highlights on the crypto industry. We know this one big computational industry. Take a look at Bitcoin, every slash means more demanding energy. Even in the midst of Proof-of-Stake we can't doubt that this data keyed in consume minute energy which sums up. Capacity and energy works hand in hand. A lot of us don't like being bothered with numbers yet this is always very essential. Where is the future of energy heading to and how can one stand to be a beneficiary should be of such many questions? Maybe you'll have to do some research on dePIN

How do we know the energy consumption level of computers? We will have to consider two factors; power consumption (mostly in watts) plus usage time. So we can simply say, Energy equals (Wh) or to spread further, Energy= Watts × hours. We are seeing fast computing characteristics of computers meaning we are looking at advanced CPUs. We will definitely need to access data on our computer storage right? How about our RAMs?. You know mostly we feel we are doing nothing with our phones yet the least of truth remains that even in your lazy phone scrolling, you are taking up energy.

In the general computer environment, we look at the motherboard, sound cards, graphics cards, fans and coolings. This sums up to a reasonable amount of energy. If the world is actually going to be computer driven, it means there is a room to capitalize on the energy industry and make waves. The world is growing with more disruptions. Again, I don't want to get into AI for now. Maybe I will take that as a full article by tomorrow. Looking at computes in crypto and blockchain tech one will really see an increasing demand. Web3 will add up too. Meaning auto data storage and security will need capacity that is energy demanding.

A run down on yearly electric consumption by estimated research shows close to 5% of electrical usage. 650-700 terawatts-hours (TWh) went to data centers only summing to 2% of electric usage. Putting together the entire IT center, we are talking about a range of 1500-2000 TWh. Will this consumption depreciate? We are hearing of nano-tech that will fly with low electric consumption. It's one of those things when talking about tech. Nevertheless, a massive adoption will always sum up to something. Even smartphones are claimed to consume 10-20 TWh annually. As long as capacity is concerned I can say the price to pay or exchange for it will be energy. I know how much energy consumption I undergo to work business out on a daily basis.

To conclude, let me add, tech advancement means a handing over of a massive amount of work for computers to perform. Its time conserving characteristics is indeed worth it. Take for instance how untidy our offices would look if we depended mostly on paper works. Trust me, when I see them piled up in people's offices I always feel choked. Adding to that, I would advise we use energy in an ethical manner to prevent global chaos. We feel this little consumption counts not but it definitely does. Unplug unused computers and gadgets, delete unneeded files. Maybe when dePIN becomes much more popular we will value all this. Till date and then, we must learn to manage compute energies properly.

We use far too much energy. We also need to be much greener in generating our energy.
