AI and crime waves

The issue of cyber crime is not new if you are an online regular. We have heard estimates in millions if not billions being lost to this industry every year. This loss record keeps appreciating on a yearly basis. We have heard or at least experienced some things about this sprouting technology. How did we get here? Well, technology has stages and we have gradually evolved this far. Without doubts, many will say it has been in a fast pace. When looking at the total tech revamping in the last 25 years, you can without doubts admit so. It first made sense from the introduction of Internet and boom!, we are now witnessing the unthinkable. There were early debates about the future of internet during its inception, some as usual said it won't stand the test of time. The dotcom bubble seemed to have almost manifested such thoughts but no, internet later prevailed.

We have seen the same in the introduction of several industries, there are and will always be tech doubters. Crypto was assumed a scam and the rest of such likes, as we speak institutional investors are crowding the system and the government are also marking time to make the most of the presented opportunity. That said, let's focus much on artificial intelligence (AI). This topic has indeed been very hot, we have seen big names stepping in to secure early spot. It's something that sends out a message that there is indeed more this industry has to offer. We are already experiencing few of its practical applications.

Every technology has always been used for both good and bad and this will continue to be the norms as long as humans are concerned. You know, most times it has been humans that spoil things. We have heard several assumptions of possibilities of AI being a threat to humanity. Aside from the masses fearing that AI will take jobs from many which indeed will, the need to look at account and online presence security is very mandatory.

Adding a little to the 'unemployment mentality' aspect of AI as viewed by the masses, I would say this depends on who is entirely involved. I have once asked the question of 'is it the work we value, or the pay thereof?'. The latter seems the truth and that's where every smart individual should build from. How can I make AI work for me while I still make my earnings? This indeed is the right question. In the midst of assumed chaos, there are diverse opportunities.

Let's stay here and leave the rest for maybe another article. So as I was saying, we need to give attention to how deep AI vulnerabilities can be. Can AI systems be exploited? Of course, so what will be the consequences thereof?, we should understand the potentials embedded in this powerful system. When AI's worthiness becomes dishonest due to human manipulation, we will definitely see a loss of assets and other important information to illicit hands. What then will the dependent masses do? AI has been design to do what humans do in the absence of humans and do it more efficiently. How will they case look like when it starts to execute transactions for you that were not actually orchestrated by you?.

Looking at its application in the phishing industry we will undoubtedly see improvement in that sector. How many users are up to date with tech upgrades? Few right? and you may say it's their duty to stay updated. Nevertheless, this will serve as an opportunity for exploitation. As I speak, it is already rampaging the internet even at early phase. As more development steps into the system, so also will the unethical bodies be doing the follow up. I heard a similar story of an AI generated card passing an ID test in an exchanger. Do you know what this means, it is just a few of those threat we should be expecting.

There will be an increase in malwares, something that is going to be very inconveniencing. With AI capabilities, it can be used to create such sophisticated kinds of softwares that tempers with regular operations. I am wondering how traditional security systems will be able to keep up with this. Does this mean AI should be scrapped? This would have been easier said before its invention, there is no going back now. Anyway, the intention of its creation was to ease human burden, something we are already seeing. Its application even from here is still at an early stage, more indeed is coming.

Adding to that too, we must admit a lot of security work is left on the table for both governments and developers. This is where I also see a massive need for blockchain, web3 and cryptocurrency adoption. We must look at how immutability will balance these cyber crime threats. Let's leave this for another day's topic. All I am adding in a glimpse here is that blockchain has a huge role.

To conclude, let me add, as we continue to see advancement in technology, we shouldn't ignore its pending effect. We all need to buckle up for what is coming. It will be the good, the bad and the ugly depending on who is operating upon this new tech. Tech is really marveling us, something I personally wished would have been used for only good intentions. But as I earlier said, humans tends to spoil or abuse things.
