Atoms and Elements

Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter. They are the smallest units of matter that retain the properties of an element. Atoms consist of a central nucleus, which contains positively charged protons and neutral neutrons, surrounded by negatively charged electrons that orbit the nucleus.

Elements, on the other hand, are substances made up of only one type of atom. Each element is defined by the number of protons in the nucleus of its atoms, which is known as its atomic number. For example, all carbon atoms have six protons in their nucleus, which gives carbon its unique atomic number of 6. There are currently 118 known elements, each with a unique set of properties.
