Drop In The Use Of Speech Is A Worrying Sign

When A Phone Stopped Being Just A Phone To Make And Receive Calls.
Over the last 25 years so much has changed in the world especially with the introduction of new technology. This is not all good news because the basic human communication of speech is suffering. I think this is something that is just too obvious to ignore and the art of being able to communicate with speech is on the slide. In many ways this is anti social behavior which is ironic with all the social media apps today.
There was a study done 5 or 6 years ago by a few US Universities that highlighted since 2005 the average person was speaking 350 words less per day year on year up until 2020. The under 25 age group was far worse dropping over 400 spoken words per day. The average for a human lies between 7000 and 16 000 words and yes you guessed correctly women tend to speak more words daily than men and in many cases includes the last word lol. Jokes aside as men we kind of knew this and no study would have been required.
With the introduction of the internet and the mobile/cell phone along with all the various social media apps that goes along with this tech the basic human communication of talking to each other has dropped off a cliff.
Things like ordering take away food is done via an app, phone calls that used to be made are now sent via a message and this is just not the same. I know many hate talking on the phone, but that is far more personal than sending a message.
I have noticed the difference in the last 5 or 10 years doing my work that buyers do not want to talk anymore and want everything in email or on an app. One has to wonder how busy are these people that they do not have the time to take a phone call anymore? I know the answer to that one already and they actually do not do a hell of a lot of work. Humans are hiding behind their desks looking at screens ticking off the minutes until home time. It is no wonder they actually have lost touch with the various products and pricing which is their job.
I always found chatting to other people is where you learn things and speaking with other people is what made my job so enjoyable. If you cannot learn from others how are you growing any real world knowledge whether it is a snippet of information that could help you in your every day job. Networking with others meant meeting people and yes chatting to them through not using an app. How does anyone know if you are a likeable character and possibly a good fit for their organization because words on a screen do not tell you the real you.
When we had the lockdowns 5 or 6 years ago I can recall people saying they missed the human contact with others because life was just not the same. I know I missed that part of every day life meaning everyone else who you might meet outside your family circle.
Many say they hate the phone or rather talking on the phone due to various personal reasons and I am the total opposite. I am of the opinion if you can message me then you can phone me because I won't message you and prefer to discuss things in person. The social media apps I detest and why things like Facebook, Instagram and Pininterest never interested me and still do not get the fuss not even for a second and never will have an account.
When we go out to a restaurant I am amazed as a species we even breed anymore as couples are no longer chatting to each other and are staring at their phones or a television on the wall. This I would find rude and insulting as the question should be asked is my company that bad you cannot talk to me? This is just very bad manners and is now accepted as normal behavior by couples. You wonder at what number date did this talking end because surely when dating this cannot be how it works today.

STOPIt's absolutely sad how many people have their phones out in restaurants. Nobody can hold more than a 5 minute conversation.

I almost never talk on the phone and actually get annoyed when I have to do it. If you aren't related to me, or if what you are trying to say to me isn't urgent, I feel like sending a message is better.
but I do agree with the sentiment above. The lack of talking has negatively affected humanity as a whole. I do make a point to have face to face encounters with people often and I will get on their case if the people try to involve their phones in our interaction.
Phones are great even if it is just to catch up with an old friend but it is rude to check your phone when talking with someone face to face as it shows disinterest even if it is unintentional. If it is not urgent then yes a message is ok.
It is the same as with writing as while we are working digitally we forget to write. In the same way as we "hide" most of the time behind a screen, our way of interaction and speak has changed as well and now in a good way. Real human connections, in person through real experiences is the thing that we need and we are losing each passing day.
Speaking to a person you find out far more about them than messaging or writing. I do not know how you could build a business relationship with a client without face to face contact.
