Formula One 2026 Race Number One - Melbourne, Australia

This should be really good and something to look forward to as over the years the sport is evolving from what it used to be. I understand what the owners of F1 are trying to achieve and that is to create a contest that allows for exciting racing to happen.

In the past one or two teams used to dominate the racing due to the tech those team engineers had developed and the other teams were playing catch up. Then we had the dirty air behind the car out front created by the aerodynamics that made over taking virtually impossible. The floor of the car was where all the magic happened that created the downforce so the car would stick to the track and why some teams were just that much quicker. This has been removed this year with new regulations in place with the floor of the car now having very few features and the downforce being created from other areas.

The 2026 racing regulations have had some major tweaks with the car now being narrower by 100mm and shorter by 200 mm with narrower front tyres. This has resulted in a maximum weight drop of around 30kg per car allowing for a car that is more nimble around the track.

The engines have been changed allowing for more sustainable fuel to be used moving from a V6 hybrid engine to a V6 Turbo hybrid engine. The big difference is that the electric motor will be providing roughly 50% of the cars power increasing from 120Kw to 350Kw. the electric motor will charge at around double the normal speed of before and will allow cars to use their harvested energy more often. In the past cars would harvest for one lap before deploying that extra energy and now could deploy that energy twice per lap.

One thing to look out for is the Mercedes engine which is being used by McLaren and Alpine Racing. They and Red Bull now using a Ford engine have apparently taken advantage of a loop hole allowing for a higher compression when being run in racing mode. The pressure test takes pace when the car is in idle and no rules have been broken. This is expected to be voted on by the teams during the mid season break so there is a clear power performance for these teams. How much of an advantage is what we need to see and I believe Ferrari has not fought this due to them being able to do something similar. This means most of the teams on the grid will be using this loop hole and for the other two teams Aston Martin and Audi to figure this out.

The aerodynamics are now labeled active aerodynamics as the driver is now in charge of adjusting the angle of the wings from inside the car. The DRS or drag reduction system which opened and closed the rear wing on the straights allowing for straighter line speed is still there, but under the drivers control. The only difference now is the front wing drops down at the same time and the driver controls the downforce by adjusting the wings in the corners. More emphasis is on the driver this year with far more happening in the cockpit. There is also an over take boost allowing the harvested electrical power to be instantly released allowing for extra speed to either defend their position or achieve an over take.

Track zones will also play a role allowing for overtaking to happen and for race control to reduce the overtaking and depending on track conditions for safety reasons. If the grip is not there then there will be restrictions on what is allowed to take place.

This is all good news as racing this year is as much about the car as it is with the driver and his skills as the driver plays a more hands on approach than ever before. In the past engineers would deploy certain features on the car like DRS and now this is all up to the driver. This I believe favors the likes of Verstappen and Hamilton more than ever this season due to their experience and racing knowledge even though Russell is the bookies favorite this season.
