Great But Vexing Technology

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to talk about how technology can be great but also annoying LOL

Great But Vexing Technology

I've been spending a fair bit of time pondering on some technical issues that I've been having and sadly it hasn't led to many good results!

Like so many of us in the world, I often use my phone to do a number of things. For me, one of those things is using my phone to do engagement on Hive while I am waiting for my son to fall asleep and I can get to writing some posts or do other things for the Hive ecosystem here. This means that I want to get on and off the platform in a pretty quick manner. Unfortunately though I've been running into some technical issues and it's been quite vexing!

I spend my adult professional life working in an IT world, as so many of us do so I know that there are so many complexities (pun intended :DDDD) when it comes to software, development and the code that is underlying so many of the things that we use and take advantage of today. I feeeeeeeel for the process more than you would know! At the same time though.. I am still a victim of what I think is frustration at inconvenience and how that changes our habits.

I grew up and remember quite well the days of the dial-up internet and having to listen to the horrendous beeping and screeching of our modems connecting to the internet. Those were tough times but they were also glorious and fucking incredible! I vividly remember how amazing it was to connect to the internet and load a website, how unbelievable that was! We also spent time gaming at my friends house on a Local Area Network, or LAN. A LAN is something that so many people these days have absolutely no idea what it is or how incredibly powerful it was to be able to do that.

Having that background, I can absolutely appreciate the changes that have taken place over the years and how we become desensitized to how much things have changed and how far we've come. I know I can certainly think of how I've become numb to some of the improvements as we get to enjoy those on a daily basis!

Hive Keychain, one of the most prolific and important development and apps that people use both on their phone and on their computers, has been such a mainstay of the ecosystem that it is almost second nature to so many of us to use it for every single day and interaction we have. That also means that when we have challenges with it, it becomes a little difficult to deal with! The Keychain team is doing absolutely the best they can but as things drag on for weeks or months, it becomes difficult to deal with..

I've been working with an issue where my mobile Keychain app takes 2-3 minutes to load the browser and I can't for the life of me figure out why. I'm usually pretty good at figuring out why these annoying things happen and this one has been vexing and challenging me for a while. I was thinking for a while it was because I was using two accounts on the app but for a while I was not. I was still getting the lag in response time. I would be logged into PeakD on one browser page and Ecency on the other with the same account with a lag in loading the pages. I thought this was because I was using PeakD on my main account here and Ecency with my Leo account but I switched that and removed that variable but still have the same issue. Now I'm to the point where I am trying to close all browser tabs and leave the app closed to see if that makes any difference or improvement in it.

I know that these things are miniscule problems in the grand scheme of things but at the same time, they are things that we deal with on a daily basis so we have to figure out what's going on. I am one who sees a problem and tries to work with the resources to identify the root cause if possible and try to offer a solution. I get enough of the people who just report problems and offer no help or solutions on a daily and weekly basis lol so I make sure to try and contribute to the resolution of it instead of just add to the problem! I'm hopeful that we can figure out the root cause of this one and improve the app for all of the mobile users - this is one that causes me quite a bit of annoyance on a daily basis.

I do want to also clarify that some days, sometimes days in a row, the thing works PERFECTLY fine hahaha. That's what makes it even more difficult and annoying :D.

Since you do not mention it in the post... have you tried different nodes to see if that helps? Also there is a setting in PeakD that will use the same node as Keychain so perhaps check it. Otherwise I dunno and good luck!

I thought it was a node issue at first but that's not the case. It's just incredibly slow to load a page. I've got the ability to switch between a couple nodes I get a great connection on and once the page actually loads, there is near-instant response times changing pages etc. If I refresh the browser though, it goes back to a slow 2-3 minute load. It's very confusing LOL

What I have done since writing this though, is to close all of the pages before exiting the app and that seems to have helped..

Gotcha. Sounds like a page cache/caching issue perhaps. Sounds hella weird.

Yeah lol ah well, that's how it goes sometimes. As long as it's not broken, I can deal with a little inconvenience!

I have often experienced that slow loading problem with mobile keychain but I usually try a different browser like kiwi browser and I discover it doesn't happen on all browsers. Thanks for writing and have a nice day.

Yeah I don't like to use other browsers, so I'm hoping this can get resolved somehow. I have changed my behaviors a bit in that I now close all windows before exiting and it seems to have helped a bit..

There was a time when the Keychain app was giving me some issues. It takes time to load but it has stopped though
Things are fine now

Yeah that's good, there is largely no issues and I've actually started to close all of the pages before I exit the app so there is nothing open. That seems to help!

I miss those days about the early days of the internet but heard a lot of incredible experiences about them from my senior peers. I also do use keychain on my phone most of the times, and sometimes there's a lag in loading pages but I often think it's the slow connection in my case.

😭 I am a senior peer! LOL I guess I am a bit older than I realize sometimes.. hahaha. The slowness on my side is a technical issue not poor connection but that's okay. Things happen!

You are very lucky to live on top of such a beautiful place and when you want to go to explore such a place we have to travel for 12 hours to see such sights.

Yeah it's nice to see so many beautiful sights within not a long distance!

I totally understand your frustration, especially when you think of the time spent solving these technical problems instead of taking full advantage of the platform. Technology, however advanced, can sometimes slow us down with its whims.

I'm a developer, so I know exactly what you're talking about.

However, I hate to go looking for bugs. I know that you find them without necessarily paying attention.

But for my part, I know it's hard enough to solve a bug without breaking the rest of the project, so I don't pay attention. Some will say I'm lazy, others will say I'm a bad developer, but I'd say I'm tired and prefer to spend my time innovating new features on my projects. But sometimes I don't have the choice but to work on bugs, and I can tell you that when that happens, it's better not to tell me what to do 😆

Yeah there's definitely a fine balance between fixing bugs and putting out new software. Bugs are annoying but they will never be completely gone. It's the balance of what is important and impactful versus what is "nice to have" type stuff.

I work in the IT realm as well, though not a developer but I talk to them nearly every single day so I know the struggle!

I did hear of someone that had a funny sign in their office "There are no bugs, there are just undocumented features." and I got a great laugh at that!

Haha, I love that phrase, it's exactly what I'm going to say to my customers now.

Well, maybe not because I don't want to lose customers. But in any case, I'd think about it very hard!

I'm sorry I cannot offer a solution, only that I was experiencing problems with the Ecency app and couldn't post properly for a month 😩 so I understand the frustration...

So refreshing to look back on the advancements we have made in technology. As you said, I also remember the days of AOL, "get off the phone! I need to use the internet!" 😭 Today's kids will never understand! And even as adults today, living in a world of instant gratification, it's so easy to get frustrated with minor inconveniences.

Thank you for sharing!

Hahah yeah we definitely forget what it was like to listen to the dial up sound.. and how web sites would load line by line LOL sometimes pixel by pixel if it was really bad! :D

Yeah it's challenging but we'll get through it. Some days it works perfectly fine, other days it doesn't. Difficult to know for sure..

Actually there was a time I didn't understand the hive keychain but gradually I am beginning to understand them much more better
