As I’ve mentioned on several occasions, part of the view from my home overlooks Ávila National Park, and it’s a real privilege for me to be able to observe different birds, which is why I’d like to share this with you today.
Yellow-crowned Amazon (Amazona ochrocephala)
On this occasion, the species that visited our balcony is a parrot, specifically a Yellow-crowned Amazon (also known as the Yellow-crowned Amazon, Yellow-fronted Amazon or, scientifically, as Amazona ochrocephala).

En esta oportunidad la especie que visitó nuestro balcón, es un loro, específicamente un Loro Guaro (también conocido como Amazonas coroniamarilla, loro frentiamarillo o científicamente como Amazona ochrocephala.
Some interesting facts
This species of bird is very social, as they usually fly in pairs or large flocks. They have a great ability to communicate through various calls and vocalisations.
Like many other species of parrots, they can live for a very long time, with an average lifespan of between 30 and 40 years.
These species inhabit tropical rainforests, woodlands and savannahs from Colombia, through Venezuela, to Brazil and Peru.
Parrots frequently feed on tender shoots—which include young leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds—in their natural environment; they consume the fruits and excrete the seeds at a distance or carry them attached to their feathers.
As a result, they play a crucial role in seed dispersal within the ecosystem, as this prevents plants from competing with one another for light, water and nutrients, and helps to maintain biodiversity.
Es un ave sudamericana de tamaño mediano (unos 33 cm) muy popular en Venezuela. Se caracteriza por su plumaje verde brillante, una frente con manchas amarillas o blancas, mejillas amarillentas, anillo ocular azul y detalles anaranjados en las alas.

Esta especie de aves son muy sociales, ya que suelen volar en parejas o grandes bandadas. Tienen una gran capacidad para comunicarse mediante diversas llamadas y vocalizaciones.
Como muchas otras especies de loros, pueden llegar a ser muy longevos, viviendo entre 30 y 40 años en promedio.
Estas especies habitan en selvas tropicales, bosques y sabanas desde Colombia, pasando por Venezuela, hasta Brasil y Perú.
Los loros se alimentan frecuentemente de brotes tiernos, que son hojas jóvenes, flores, frutas y semillas en su entorno natural, consumen los frutos y excretan las semillas a distancia o las transportan adheridas a sus plumas.
Con ello su aporte es crucial para la dispersión de semillas en el ecosistema, ya que evita que las plantas compitan entre sí por la luz, el agua y los nutrientes, y ayuda a mantener la Bio diversidad.
In this city, it is extremely common to see these parrots (and macaws) visiting the balconies and windows of flats in search of food or just out of curiosity.

-Compact silhouette: Its short, square tail is the unmistakable hallmark of this genus of parrots, distinguishing them completely from macaws or long-tailed parakeets.

He seems to be quite at home on our balcony; it’s a real privilege to have visitors like this in my garden.
To be honest, having a spot in our home where this brown-headed parrot chooses to stop and rest is, I think, a luxury you don’t find just anywhere in the world.
So I think our balcony or garden has become the perfect stop for them as they fly across the city.
Among other interesting facts about these new neighbours is that they are loyal and monogamous; these parrots form lifelong pairs.
For example, when I was taking photos of one of these little friends with my phone, its mate arrived – I imagine it had been flying nearby or waiting for it in one of the leafy trees at the back of our garden.
This confirms to me that they don’t go it alone. Here’s the perfect pair:

La verdad es que tener un rincón en nuestra casa donde este Loro Guaro decida pararse a descansar, creo que es un lujo que no se vive en cualquier parte del mundo.
Entonces creo que nuestro balcón o jardín se ha convertido en su parada perfecta mientras cruza la ciudad.
Entre otros datos curiosos sobre estos nuevos vecinos, es que Son fieles y monógamos, estos loros forman parejas para toda la vida.
Por ejemplo, cuando estaba capturando las imágenes con mi teléfono de uno de estos amiguitos, llegó su compañero o compañera, me imagino que estaba volando muy cerca o esperándolo en uno de los árbol frondoso que tenemos al fondo de nuestro entorno.

However, there is a fascinating detail in this photo, as we may be looking at two different species of parrot sharing the same space, or at least two individuals with very different features:
- The one at the bottom: This is the same Yellow-fronted Amazon (Amazona ochrocephala) as in the previous photos, with its very distinctive and striking yellow forehead.
- The one above: if you look closely at its head, you can’t see the yellow patch on its forehead; it appears completely green (or perhaps with a very slight bluish tinge on the crown, although the light doesn’t help much in making this out, and it might mean that it is a Royal Parrot. (Amazona farinosa), which is noticeably larger and a duller green, or a juvenile yellow-crowned macaw that has not yet developed the yellow plumage on its head.
Receiving these visitors in the garden or on the balcony is always a magical moment, especially when it’s a pair; the fact that they’ve decided to perch there for the first time means that our space has given them complete confidence and security from the heights of the city.

Recibir estas visitas en el jardín o balcón siempre es un momento mágico, sobre todo cuando se trata de una pareja doble, que hayan decidido posarse ahí por primera vez significa que nuestro espacio les generó total confianza y seguridad desde las alturas de la ciudad.
As this is their first time visiting our home, I’ll bear in mind a few useful tips to help them feel at ease and ensure this visit becomes a lovely routine:
- Provide a bowl of water:
More than food (as the city’s vegetation provides them with plenty of fruit and seeds), a heavy, sturdy container of fresh, clean water is a magnet for them, especially on hot days. - Do not offer processed foods:
If I were ever to leave them anything, it should only be fresh fruit (bananas, papayas) or natural sunflower seeds. No foods containing salt or sugar, as these are very harmful to their digestive system.
Being able to enjoy the moment and the loud calls they made when they announced their arrival was thrilling, and I want to be prepared, because if they like the place, it’s very likely they’ll start turning up early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The truth is, I was very lucky to manage to capture both of them in the same photo, and I hope this is the first of many visits.

Ya que es la primera vez que llegan a nuestro hogar, tendré en cuenta unos datos útiles para que se sientan cómodos y este encuentro se convierta en una bonita rutina:
- Colocarle un recipiente con agua:
Más que comida (ya que la vegetación de la ciudad les da bastantes frutos y semillas), un envase pesado y firme con agua fresca y limpia es un imán para ellos, especialmente en los días calurosos.

Permitirnos disfrutar el momento y la vocalización sonora cuando avisaron que llegaron, fue emocionante y quiero preparme, porque si les gusta el lugar, es muy probable que empiecen a llegar temprano en la mañana o al final de la tarde, la verdad es que tuve mucha suerte al lograr capturar a ambos en la misma foto y ojalá sea la primera de muchas visitas.
