Hello friends and STEM content lovers, this time I bring a topic that is of importance to petroleum engineering, and is the prevention of offshore oil spills, we know that the operations of drilling wells along with others such as the repair of a well are very risky, and depending on the incidents that may occur there may be the eventuality that oil is released into the marine environment, however for that it consists with the relevant knowledge about how to know how to give an appropriate response to these oil spills.

It is also important to mention that an offshore oil spill can not only be caused by a well blowout due to a rush of fluids such as natural gas and oil from the bottom of the well to the surface, however given my professional background, my approach to offshore oil spill prevention and response is mainly focused on the occurrence of offshore oil spills due to well drilling operations.

There is something better than knowing how to give an effective response to an offshore oil spill, this is to prevent the spill, of course, once the spill happens you have to know how to act, however let's see how we can do to prevent these offshore oil spills.

Technological evaluation of equipment and procedures

The drilling history of some wells that have exploded uncontrollably to the surface have shown that one of the most influential factors for the occurrence of such explosions is the failure of the technological tools used in the location.

Many times it is certain that a blowout is occurring in the well, when an attempt is made to close the well using the whole set of blowout preventers, many of them fail in their operation, either because they have not been previously maintained, or because they have not been tested under normal conditions. That is why it is necessary to carry out a constant technological evaluation of the well control equipment.

In addition to the evaluation it is also important that all personnel involved in drilling operations are clear about the procedures to follow, for example, in a well lunge, everyone must be clear on how to close and control the pressures of a well in the event of a threat of invasion to the surface of fluids such as natural gas and oil.

Training protocols

For example, it is unheard of that all personnel involved in the drilling activities of an oil well have not completed an intensive well control course, all those involved must be trained, for this there must be independent agencies that supervise the activities, and if any engineer, supervisor or worker such as a driller who has not completed all levels of the well control course, then drilling should be stopped until such personnel is replaced by someone who is certified.

The above is just an example of how the safety protocols and training of the personnel involved should act, each country has its own rules and regulations, but from my experience in my 3 years as a drilling operations engineer, I can tell you that I was not on a drilling rig until I had completed all three levels of the well control course.

In general, if continuous inspections are made to pipes, valves and different components in active wells or wells that are being drilled, the probability of an oil spill is minimized, however in this topic of offshore oil spills it is also important to mention that there must be contingency plans, For example, in the event of an explosion on an offshore drilling platform, there is not only the danger of an oil spill, but also human losses, so having a contingency plan can be useful for the people who spend the night on such platforms to know what to do when the alarm of a possible well blowout and the occurrence of a possible explosion sounds.

Associated technologies

The drilling of wells is the first stage of danger in which oil spills can occur offshore, so that these spills do not occur some equipment must be used to protect the well so that there is no communication between the fluids contained in the oil field (subsoil) and the surface while drilling.

This equipment is called Blowout Preventer Set (BOP), it consists of a set of valves whose purpose is to close the well and prevent the passage of oil and natural gas to the surface.

To talk about these blowout preventers I will give my opinion about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico where the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig was operating.

The final report revealed that the final defense to prevent an oil spill, a device known as a blind shear ram, was activated but failed to plug the well.

From my perspective, when they already tried to activate the blind cut ram, which is a ram that cuts the drill pipe and condemns the well, that is to say in case it had worked in the same way that well was lost operationally speaking, is because they should have tried to close the well with the other existing valves, that is to say for example with the annular BOP that closes to any diameter of pipe, so I believe that having failed to activate the blind ram is not the cause of the explosion.

To get into context, before the blowout of an oil well occurs, there are certain warnings that a blowout is about to occur, for example the drilling speed increases, the filling volume of the active tanks of the drilling fluid increases, the well flows with the pumps off, All these arguments lead me to think that in the first instance the errors were human, they did not know how to take an accurate reading of the indicators that the well should have shown before the explosion and with this act in time, by the time they tried to close the well it was too late, because all the pressure of the formation fluids was on the surface.

However, even though my opinion has been that in the first instance it was human failure, let's see how the technology is acting through these blowout preventer devices. Studies have shown that if the blind shear ram is activated and meets the threaded joint of two drill pipes, there is a high probability that the pipe is not cut, so I believe that in this regard the technology for this type of equipment to evolve and increase its effectiveness of action.

When the pipe ram cuts into the pipe body an effective cut can be seen as shown below:

There is another very common cause of explosions in oil wells, in this case if they are offshore we already know the dire consequences it leaves the marine ecosystem, this cause is not making a good cementing between the existing space between the well and the casing, if not well cemented the phase of the producing interval can cause cracks in the cement and get the fluids such as gas and oil migrate to the surface causing the oil explosion and subsequent spill.

For this, it is advisable to run a cement log in the well after cementing, in case it is of poor quality, we will proceed to make the appropriate corrections.
