Siratro (plant) - Chorequillo (planta).
I recently posted about two beetles, in a photograph one of them was on the leaf of a plant and I commented that I would write about that plant. That plant is the species Macroptilium atropurpureum and I describe information below.

Macroptilium atropurpureum, commonly known as siratro, is a plant belonging to the Fabaceae family found mainly in moist and warm tropical and subtropical areas, but it can also grow in wet habitats in semi-arid and arid areas. It is native to tropical America. It occurs naturally from Texas in the United States and northern Mexico to Peru and Bolivia.
Macroptilium atropurpureum, conocida comúnmente como chorequillo, es una planta perteneciente a la familia Fabaceae que se encuentra principalmente en zonas tropicales y subtropicales húmedas y cálidas, pero también puede crecer en hábitats húmedos de zonas semiáridas y áridas. Es originaria de América tropical. Se da de forma natural desde Texas en Estados Unidos y el norte de México hasta Perú y Bolivia.
The plant grows in disturbed sites, wastelands, coastal forests, gardens, urban bushlands, riparian forests, watercourses and along roadsides. I captured the photographs of plants growing along a roadside.
La planta crece en lugares alterados, terrenos baldíos, bosques costeros, jardines, matorrales urbanos, bosques ribereños, cursos de agua y a lo largo de los bordes de las carreteras. Las fotografías las capturé a plantas creciendo en el borde de una carretera.
It is a herbaceous plant that may have creeping or climbing stems. The stems at the base of older plants are fibrous and can measure more than 5 millimeters in diameter, while younger stems are mostly 1 to 2 millimeters in diameter.

Climbing stems usually grow to 2 to 3 meters in long and occasionally up to 5 meters in height when climbing up over taller vegetation.

Its leaves are compound with three slightly lobed leaflets, darker green and finely hairy on the upper surface, gray-green, pubescent on the lower surface. These leaves are arranged alternately along the stems.

The lateral leaflets are ovate to narrowly elliptic and the terminal leaflet is rhomboid.

The inflorescence has several flowers that may be crowded at the tips of long flower stalks (peduncles) 10 to 30 centimeters long.

Its pea-shaped flowers are dark reddish-purple or blackish-purple in colour, with reddish tinge near the base.

Each flower is borne on a very short stalk (pedicel) 1 to 2 millimeters long. They have a small upper petal (that is, the standard) and two large lateral petals (that is, the wings), also two pinkish lower petals that are fused together, strongly twisted or coiled.

Its fruits are linear pods (long and narrow) that are cylindrical and can measure up to 10 centimeters long. These pods turn from green to brown in colour as they mature.
Sus frutos son vainas lineales (largas y estrechas) que son cilíndricas y pueden medir hasta 10 centímetros de largo. Estas vainas pasan del color verde al marrón a medida que maduran.
The pods dehisce violently (shatter) when ripe and the seeds are forcibly ejected from the pod, when this occurs about 12 seeds are released and can be thrown several meters away. The seeds are somewhat egg-shaped or slightly kidney-shaped (reniform) and are speckled light brown and black.

Finally, I compare the color of the flowers of Macroptilium atropurpureum with that of flowers of similar species of the same genus. Macroptilium lathyroides with bright red flowers and Macroptilium gibbosifolium with orange flowers.
Finalmente, comparo el color de las flores de Macroptilium atropurpureum con el de las flores de especies similares del mismo género. Macroptilium lathyroides con flores de color rojo brillante y Macroptilium gibbosifolium con flores de color anaranjado.
